"Two Black Bottles" is the result of a collaboration between H. P. Lovecraft and Wilfrid Branch Talman. It was first published in Weird Tales Magazine in August 1927. In the story, the narrator, Hoffman, recounts a trip into the Ramapo Mountains of New York, following the death of his uncle. Words cannot express my delight upon finding a Lovecraft story I had never heard of. Thank you SO much for such a gift! My pleasure is immeasurable, and my day is made!
Great story. The Rampo mountains were an old iron mining area in colonial times and are located about 30 miles north of New York City on the opposing bank of the Hudson River. Many of the old mine pits were filled with industrial waste allegedly from a now long defunct automotive plant. Bruce Springsteen wrote a song, Johnny 99, about the area and the closing of the plant, and a murder committed by as distraught worker. Spingstein lived in Highland Falls for a time, if I remember correctly, which is located in the Ramapo Mountains adjacent to West Point Army College. The college has an artillery range in the mountains, and sometimes you hear what sounds like far off thunder on a sunny day. On a clear day, you can see the Manhattan skyline from that area. During the 9/11 attacks, giant pillars of smoke and dust rising from the burning ruins of the Trade Center were visible from the mountains. The area is now being increasingly populated by what one might refer to as fringe religious extremists groups.
It amazes me how you come up with so many Lovecraft related/associated/edited/collaborations, I had no idea! I think I heard this a long time ago, it's so extra Goth, and so perfect, especially narrated by you!
I got two black bottles and a microphone, Where it's at, I got two black bottles and a microphone, And something said into that mic that Warren is dead!
I keep revisiting this story several nights a week. There is something unsettling about a minister under the influence of evil who preaches alone to an empty church.
By some manner, (that which is inhuman) I find myself here upon this video, relaying cyclopean horrors in audible productions,,,, not by influence of morphine or other opiates
Love you and I'm always happy for Lovecraft I haven't heard/read before. I just can't get over the use of the word "ejaculated" in this story. "'You?!' I ejaculated..." I couldn't help but laugh hysterically. Possibly because I write smut, probably because I'm immature.
I'm so excited I just discovered H.P Lovecraft a couple of years now. Even though I would love to be reading it myself, thanks to Horrorbabble, they have wonderful narrators. And.I keep busy with listening of the extreme talent of Lovecraft.
Now if H.P. Lovecraft would have thrown this in somewhere amongst "The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward". It would really have spiced up the proceedings. Chillingly atmospheric stuff.
The Ramapo Mountains start in New Jersey and cut through south New York into the Hudson River between Peekskill and West Point (and Harriman State Park into Bear Mountain State Park) near Fort Montgomery.
I like to think in these collaborations the author sends Lovecraft the draft and gets back something with like three of their words in it and is all "What the f##k Howard?!"
