Two Brilliant Hacks for Finding Your Calling

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NationBuilder founder and CEO Jim Gilliam offers some advice to people who haven't yet unlocked their own potential. First, try new things by saying "yes" to things you're initially inclined to say "no" to. Only by stepping outside your comfort zone can you determine whether said comfort zone actually exists. Second, just as with raising a child, unlocking one's personal potential requires a village. Find good listeners who are willing to hear your story. Reflect on your life with the aid of another's ears and you'll be on your way to introspection and self-realization.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JIM GILLIAM:
Jim Gilliam is the founder and CEO of NationBuilder, and author of the recently published book, The Internet Is My Religion. Previously, he co-founded Robert Greenwald's Brave New Films, building a non-profit grassroots media powerhouse of a million members. In the late 90's, he launched Business.com as its Chief Technology Officer, and worked at Lycos, one of the first internet search engines. His speech at the Personal Democracy Forum in June 2011 has been viewed over 500,000 times and called "the best video on the internet."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TRANSCRIPT:
Jim Gilliam: So how do you find what you were meant to create and that’s extremely hard. I talked to a lot of folks who feel lost in understanding what that might be. There’s two things that I found for me that were really helpful. The first is to say yes to all the things that you would normally say no to. And the more uncomfortable it makes you feel, the more you should do it. So when I was struggling with this, I guess it was almost 15 years ago I said, "Okay, I’m just going to do anything ridiculous I could possibly do." So as you could imagine I’m an Internet geek so I don’t go outside all that much. So I’m like, "Okay, I’m going to go to Alaska and I’m going to camping and I’m going to do it with a bunch of strangers." I could not think of anything sort of more terrifying than being around a bunch of people that I don’t know in the middle of the freezing cold with nothing around. So I did that and it was amazing. It was so awesome. It was so great. I went dumpster diving with a bunch of anarchists. That was really awesome. Yeah, I might have gotten sick, but it was totally fine. I modeled for like an entire week and that was horrifyingly awful. I learned very quickly that I hated that. But so that’s one way.
The other way is not obvious at all. I found that in sharing your story with somebody else, someone who doesn’t necessarily have to know you very well or they can - it doesn’t really matter. But if you reflect back with someone else the story of your life - and it can go on for hours and hours and hours they can start to tell you the themes that emerge that you would never sort of see yourself. One of the things that’s challenging when you’re extremely talented at something is that it’s really easy for you. And so you generally don’t value it as much as that thing that’s really hard. And so somebody else can see that in you frequently much better than you can. And what I found is just sharing your story with each other, reflecting back. Oh like in my life community and connection and the Internet and how all that connects together was a really big part of my life and that helped me understand who I was and what I was uniquely meant to create here. So finding one other person to share that with - a good listener - is another great way to find it.

@sorcereo
@sorcereo 8 лет назад
+Sweejit I actually have this exact same problem. I made it my policy to try to help anyone in most situations. To take his words less literally, I suppose, at least in my case, more of an internal "yes" is in order. Get an idea for something I'd like to do but would usually say that it's absurd... maybe do it? Eh, I could be overanalyzing it; could just be some shoddy advice that only works for some people.

Great idea about telling your life story and who do we often do that with? A therapist. Finding the theme is the challenge and often we are too *close* to our own story to often see our theme. As for the crazy challenges he gave himself? I think part of him- subconsciously- picked those for a reason and not just because they were out of his comfort zone. Perhaps deep down inside, he wished he could do those things. I can definitely see pros come out of making your comfort zone larger but people don't have to go to an extreme degree to do that. Liked this vid a lot!

I made a up a trick to help making decisions. I learn somewhere that the subconscious prioritizes.Example chocolate or vanilla, soup or salad, stay or go, yes or no, by reframing the chioces into a question. Example would i like beef, chicken or fish? The answer is beef because the subconscious put beef first.

Wow, you guys completely missed the nuance in his suggestions. Its not just simply try new things and talking to people. Its actually: 1) Doing things as far outside of familiarity as you can get. (*not* facing your fears, that's different. Being a model for a week is doing something you are unfamiliar with, not something you are afraid of) 2) Getting other peoples' perspectives on your life. Its not just talking to people, its getting people to try to notice patterns in your own life and behavior you might have never noticed.

In this case, "hack" is appropriate. It's a clumsy, poorly-thought-out solution to a problem that, while it does work, almost certainly leads to an absolute clusterfuck as a result of trying to work around the original kludge. With that first bit of advice, it might lead to a literal clusterfuck. Or, y'know, when someone finds this video to be that little nudge that convinces them to stop saying "no" when told to kill a man.

I honestly can't think of worse advice than "Say yes to everything you're inclined to say no to." Here; drink this expired milk! Would you like to try seppuku? Russian roulette? Burn your house down with your family inside? If you are inclined to say no, then you should say yes to these things, right? How about instead of such a blanket statement that is clearly horrible advice, you just say, "Go outside your comfort zone and try new things"?
@Hissingcash123

Okay, don't drink, try this research drug I'm selling as acid because it's out of your comfort zone. You know bad milk is bad, but have you ever tried this stuff? Yeah what we're taught is that expired milk is bad, but until you try it you may never know.

+Savant I think rather than just pointing this out in a RU-vid comment, we should crucify this guy. How dare he mess up a sentence like that, in front of a camera? What right does he have to do that, to word something so carelessly? After all, it's not like someone could figure out what he was trying to actually say. Say yes to everything?? What an *absurd* statement. Should I say yes to murder? Of course I should, according to him. I mean, I could use some common sense and realize that he was trying to say "go outside your comfort zone", but what good is common sense, really? Why jump to a correct conclusion when you can get angry at such a menial thing?

What he is advocating is the ruling ideology of today. Explore yourself, find yourself, say no to fear, go all the way. Nothing new here. You can get the same information from a Nike ad. Eating from a dumpster with anarchist is a bore. If anything saying no, and thinking instead of doing, could be considered revolutionary today. The second part was bit more interesting.
