I think they are both females. Males have a blue cere (above the beak). 🇦🇺

@@katehobbs2008 Actually it depends on the color morph of the bird. White or pied or even yellow budgies can often be so pale as to be difficult to tell what sex they are. A general rule of thumb is the more pigment in their feathers the more you will expect in their cere. Years ago I had two birds that looked like they were the same sex successfully have babies with each other... and the babies also looked like they were the same sex despite it being statistically improbable. But yes as a general rule males have a smooth blue cere and females are a rough brown.

Also, Sugar is actually still a juvenile who's probably just pestering Blueberry for food. You can tell because his or her eyes are still all black without any white visible around the pupil. So it could be either courtship or just a juvenile pestering an adult to feed it.

@@Stratocaster893 This! I have a very young budgie called Sammy that my mom and I rescued a few months ago and he looks a lot like Sugar. We figured out that he is a boy pretty early on, despite the pale cere. Even months later, his cere hasn't really changed colours, but his behaviour (including, but not limited to, constant playfulness, certain courtship behaviours and even regurgitation) indicates that he is a male. It's a good thing, as we were in need of another male budgie to balance the flock! (We don't breed them, but we do keep flock balance in mind as we have birds in the double digits and want to avoid hormonal madness haha). They are wonderful creatures!

I'm thinking many of the same general principles used in bird training. Which perhaps helps explain why Capri is so well behaved.

I agree with you, and I think they mention more than once that they have read several books and done a lot of research into the topic of human behaviour and applied it to their parrot training. It's probably not a coincidence that they're the most known parrot trainers and also have a daughter that seems to be well raised.

Your budgie needs a companion. Please, at least, adopt one more budgie.

I had a solo budgie (Spock) for years (I've had him for 10 years now and he was solo for 7) but once I got a second budgie (Sasha), it was like Spock bloomed into a whole new bird; he retained his tameness, his affectionate personality, and his huge vocabulary but he also became so much more active and playful, he became a better eater, a better sleeper and a much happier and healthier bird on every level. Sasha may be number 1 in Spock's eyes now, she may be the thing he loves most in the entire world, but I still feel like Spock loves me even more than he used to, simply because I brought Sasha into his life. They've been together for 3 years this month and it's like their bond still grows stronger every day. In the 10 years that I've had Spock, I've taken in a lot of bad parrot husbandry advice. I followed what his breeder told me and as a result I did almost everything wrong for the first few years (the few things that I did right was never clipping his wings, always giving him out of cage time and spending all the time I possibly could with him), my care standards on everything from diet to sleep to cage set up all had to change drastically starting a little over 4 years ago. I've pulled a full 180, found the right sources of knowledge and made the right changes to provide my birds with the best care possible. From my current vantage point, I can clearly state that the worst advice I have ever taken was taking to heart was what Spock's breeder told me 6 months after I got Spock when I went back to her to ask for a second budgie as a companion for him, she told me: "If you get a second budgie, Spock will lose all of his tameness, he will only care about that other budgie, he will lose his bond with you and he will never let you handle him again.". I let those words scare me out of getting another budgie for years. Now though, I know that adopting Sasha was the single best thing I have ever done for Spock and I know that his breeder was dead wrong. Spock is still bonded to me, and even though his bond with Sasha is much stronger than his bond with me, the bond that Spock and I share is stronger now than the bond we had before Sasha came into the picture because Spock as a whole is so much more vibrant now, he expresses so much more and he understands better now how to interact with others. Don't be afraid to get a second budgie. Do your research and introduce them carefully and in the long run, your budgie will thank you.

Our budgies are mostly male, but they have great friendships, they are really happy with companions, the girls all seem to go for one little male, who is a typical Aussies budgie.

@@kiki29073 You can always hear them coming, going, or sitting still. it's a rare moment during the day at least one of them is making noise. Then there are the "budgie storms" where they all go tearing about the room (and past my head} screeching. Good times.

Is it safe for budgies to fly around house and how you deal with the mess they create?

@@simranmaurya8165 I have made the space they have access to bird safe, and I keep an eye on them. When I leave the apartment for any length of time I put them in their cage. As for the mess its not like they scatter poop around randomly. it's always under a perch. I put paper down under the messiest places. And I clean more frequently than I would if I didn't have birds. They are messy no doubt about it, but it's worth it to me.

Why on earth would anyone abuse a bird???!!! They are some of the most beautiful creatures on earth! Even if they do get loud, the sounds they make are beautiful.

Also, usually when you first introduce budgies, they both have to be caged to prevent foot biting and fighting. You were very lucky that sugar and blue love each other, but if they didn’t, budgies can kill each other when introduced in the manner which you did. Budgies are extremely fast, and it’s extremely difficult to stop them from fighting each other.

How do you figure, when Blueberry's cere is blue, indicating he is male?

Young females have a light blue ceremony with distinct white circles around the nostrils. The brown ceres are later. Young males have pink ceres that turn quite blue when older. Pied males may retain the pink ceres.
