Joe. I've been watching. Worried about you when you bonked from the heat. Looking at your packing video and then watching this one, I don't think you eat enough and drink enough (water) on your trips. Especially breakfast. Instant oatmeal is an insulin crash nightmare, dump that crap and get something more substantial. I"m an old Army guy and I know extra weight is a pain, but please consider packing more chow and a way to get more water in you. Love ya Bro. Wish I could join in, but I"m too old.

Yea keep hydrated. Joe's big problem is not wearing a long sleeve shirt and wide brim hat. In particular the wide brim hat or hat with neck flap is super important. Keeping the sun off your neck all day keeps heat stroke away. I usually take a wide brim fishing hat or if wearing a cap I use my Buff as a neck flap under it.

Hi Joe and Kyle. Looks like a great trip, and I love the packboats. I have been paddling my own for a while in prep for my Algonquin crossing this summer. One thing I noticed is that you are using your arms to pull yourself more than I would recommend. This can be a very fatiguing style compared to pivoting at the waist so that you derive power from your legs and core (big muscles) rather than just your triceps (smaller muscles). There are some good tips on RU-vid for this paddling technique. If you are paddling with this technique, you imagine a beachball between your paddle and your chest. As you pivot, your trailing hand should be passing in front or you eyes as you paddle,. Also, rather than pulling with the paddle hand, you should be pushing with the other hand. Just wanted to share these tips because they have worked for me really well to avoid fatigue. Better to adopt these habits early, right?

Jaro, those extendable Rods can be a little shaky at the best of times. You can buy 4 piece packable rods in a tube, but in reality, any rod can break on you. A spare rod is always a good thing if you are going to be gone for a length of time. But I agree, Joe does a great job of teaching and can inspire anyone to learn more.

When I dehydrate ground beef i've found it works better if you mix it with bread crumbs before cooking it. I mix 1lb of raw ground beef with 1 cup of bread crumbs by hand then cook the ground beef as usual and dehydrate it. Helps it rehydrate and is much more like it was before dehydration. Great videos!

One of my memories hiking in Ontario way back in the day is flies that will eat you to death.. We hiked way out to a cabin in Tobermory ON with flies sort of biting us on the way out. By the time we were headed in they were almost eating us alive. I was only like 6 but figured out to grab ferns and swat them away, it was beyond bad. I may have saved us. Nice trip sir.

31:24 did you guys ever think about adding 50/50 bags to your boats? 50% in the front bag and 50% to aft. Don't carry your stuff on your back portaging. Put it all on the boat and also add lots of foam to to the carrying yolk. :) I know it sounds like I'm laughing but I'm not. Love these videos and maybe this comment helps someone.

@Wintertrekker
@Wintertrekker 8 лет назад
Hey Joe, good trip so far. Thanks for the bug dope shout out! Nice speck! I could almost taste it! The portages in northern backcountry are always that way. The southern parks are manicured and not representative of further north and crown land. Very glad to see you double carrying for the hard portages. One wrong move and your spine can be crippled for life. Double carry very good! Double carries for 1-2 weeks, and triple carries for 3-4 weeks are the normal way. Re sick feeling: Looked like it might be dehydration. I guzzle water from the middle of the lake straight all day long, unfiltered, and never had a problem. I drink probably 4 liters per hot day with portages. Too many bites - they can be prevented. I will PM to send some tips your way. Looking forward to part 2. Beautiful country there!
@BurleyOutdoors
@BurleyOutdoors 8 лет назад
Wintertrekker. I 100% agree with you. This more Northern park is a whole new game. The portages are next level. It was really hot. Water management played a big part in us feeling like crap or not.
@Wintertrekker
@Wintertrekker 8 лет назад
Burley Outdoors Thanks Kyle! Can't wait to see your video footage of same trip. Yep winter or summer, I have come to the conclusion that tripping health and staying sharp all day has alot to do with hydration. Consuming 4-5 liters per day is normal in that heat and humidity and hard work portaging. I like drinking from my 1L Nalgene with its graduations, because I can monitor what I have been consuming, and my cup in camp is 250 ml, so I keep mental notes all day on volume consumed.
@BurleyOutdoors
@BurleyOutdoors 8 лет назад
I should have my video up in the next couple of days. I hear you with the water. If there is one thing I learned from this trip is that with enough water, snickers, peanut M&Ms, and Rum the human body can do about anything.
@xnbomb
@xnbomb 8 лет назад
I guess I should qualify some remarks I made, Joe, in an earlier comment. I can see how, when tripping solo, double or triple carries would be normal ... because a solo tripper has too much stuff to make it over in one go. And would heartily agree that Wintertrekker should be seen as an authority on that point; he has the experience and has very generously shared some it with us via his videos (of which, I too, am a huge fan!). In larger groups, though, this is less true ... you can use what amount to 'economies of scale' to have less stuff in total: Two people can share a canoe, a tent, a stove, etc. And this gets better the bigger the group is. Even the food does this a bit if your share meals, because even if the volume of the food per person remains the same, you carry less packaging for it. Of course, length of trip is a factor: Once you get the gear worked out (and if it remains the same for multi-day trips of various durations) the thing that keeps getting bigger and heavier is the food. So, what I should have written last time is that if two people share a canoe, and share other things too (like a tent and a stove, and meals and tools etc.) then you should be able to usually single carry on trips that are not too long (I dunno, less than two weeks? ). Because you have one canoe between the two of you, and can conceivably fit everything in one smaller bag that the canoe carrier also carries, and one large (huge) bag for the other person. And this works and gets easier on multi-canoe trips (which, admittedly, is most of my experience). The principle that I have always applied is that each canoe should ideally be self-sufficient on a portage (that the people in it can carry it and the stuff in it in one go). But if you are solo (and effectively, you and Kyle are solo, or sort of double solo ... since you are each carrying almost everything to each be self-sufficient, with a few exceptions), I can see how this wouldn't work. When I wrote that earlier comment, I was guessing that you and Kyle would be sharing a traditional canoe in the future, not going with the two pack boats. And I will also admit that I have never had the additional burden of the camera gear, which I definitely recognize is a burden ... in some of the way you have described. I remember some of the portages you showed in this video taking 100% of my concentration and effort just to get through in one piece. The idea of doing that and also shooting attractive footage of it at the same time strikes me as amazingly hard, and I am not sure that most viewers have any idea how hard. I am so grateful to all of you who take the trouble to do that so you can share these experiences with the rest of us. On the edge of my seat, waiting for Pt2 ...

Tip - use lanyards attached to anything that could end up on the lake bed if you capsize or just drop overboard. Nasty thing, losing a rod. You'll look after the next one far better, these things are valuable (costly!) lessons... Been there, done it etc. 26lb canoe? Feather weight! Mine's 15ft and is supposed to be 26kg - which is underquoting it - it's more like 29kgs. It's an English canoe, plastic. Called a Venture Ontario. Only modest "rocker" since it's a flat water boat. Since I'm 65 now it's a bit on the heavy side for me these days... I envy you your laker trout; we don't have those here in Scotland, only Brown Trout and Sea Trout as natural trout species. We do have Arctic Charr in our deep lochs, which are small fish. A big one would be a pound weight unless there's a fish farm on the loch.

As nice and light as they are, I cant believe that you spent about $3000 on that pack boat!! Ocean Kayaks, especially the Trident series, are the most stable boats on the water (next to expensive motorboats and yachts) and they are half that cost, mind you they are about 20-30 lbs heavier; but as long as you are happy with it, thats all that matters!! Great footage!!

That's Rough! Joe, luckily for you your buddy brought that 2nd pole. A few years back I almost lost my favorite rod off the side of my brother-in-law's boat ever since then when I go out I keep my rod tide off to the middle of the seat, you'd think it would get in the way but it really doesn't, something might want to consider for next time.
