We were invited out by our new friends Ronald and Amy to join them for few days as they chartered a 37' monohull. Ronald is newish to sailing like Jessica and I and we took the opportunity to practice the various sailing skills we've learned so far.
We practiced docking & standing turns, every point of sail you could imagine, man overboard, and other important skills.
We also do a boat tour of the Hunter 37.5 for those of you who might be interested in one.

Very cool. We were there on pier 4 for about 2 weeks getting our boat ready to go cruising. Might have been there at the same time! Take the plunge and go cruising too!

Awesome to see a video about a boat I own and live aboard. I wish you both good fortune and wind in the future! Finding a sailboat to accommodate large, yet "in good condition" people will be an amazing feat. Kinda like sports cars. As for the main sail; heavily reinforced area deformation. Check halyard routing and vertical track. Sticking clips......... And on and on it goes with any and all aspects of a boat. Enjoy !

Isn't a Cunningham for tightening that part of the sail?

Glad you got back to the ocean and were able to sail with your friends! Most likely the tack of the sail is slack because one of the mainsail cars got stuck in the track. (BTW you called it clew in the video text; the clew is at the the back of the sail. The tack is at the front.) That can happen if a car is canted at an angle within the track, for example. Also when I sailed last weekend there was a piece of metal joining the (external) tracks on the mast that seemed to catch the cars while we were raising the main. To fix it, ease the halyard back down and wiggle the cars in the track while raising the main back up. (The stuck car will probably be at the top of were the slack starts.) This is easier on smaller boats where the bottom of the sail is more reachable, but on some boats you can step up the mast to do it. Even if you can't step up, wiggling the sail where you can reach it may help free up the cars while you're raising the sail. If the clew of the mainsail were slack I'd say the topping lift was overtensioned. For actual sail trim, in light winds the sail will be more efficient with more draft, so easing the outhaul will increase the draft and make you go faster. The cunningham and traveler can be used to adjust the twist for lighter or heavier winds. P.S. Nice job on the prop walk.

Great thanks! Makes sense. I thought the fore-most corner was called the tack, but doubted myself, and then did a google image search. And one of the first sail diagram images that pops up has it wrong. Lesson learned.

Jessica and Ryan Adventures The front corner of the jib is also the tack and the back corner is the clew, so the name doesn't match the shape across sails. The tack is at the front in both.

Jessica and Ryan Adventures Another thought, if the boom vang had too much tension, perhaps it could pull the end of the boom down and make the clew taut while the tack was slack. Earlier in the video of that day it looked like the boom vang was loose, but it would really help to get a better look at it (and the status of the cunningham, downhaul, outhaul, etc.). My vote is still for a stuck car however.

Have read some of the comments here and agree for the most part. The first thing I would do is slacken the boom vang and try raising the main a bit more. A Cunningham would help as well but I didn't see a cringle (grommet) on the luff (front edge) near the tack. Be sure to leave a little slack in the main sheet while raising the main as well. Great video! I didnt really think Ryan was that tall until the overhanging feet at the bed. And you and Jessica totally fooled me, I thought there was going to be a Titanic moment with you both at the bow =P

I'd recognize that green water as only specific to the Galveston bay area out of Clear Lake/Kemah area.. LOL I used to teach sailing in that not so "Clear Lake".

You need a Cunningham to get rid of that sail sloppiness. OR more halyard tension when first uphauled.

As for the sail trim... That's a B&R rig so it has a curved mast and it's 3/4 fractional rigged. My Hunter is the same way. That looks like a footed main so the sail MAY be cut to have it left baggy so the bottom of the sail can fill and hold shape. You can raise the main halyard to stretch it and yes put on the outhaul but a little baggy is OK. If it was loose footed and baggy, the main needs to go tighter. Teflon spray on the sail slides for this model will do wonders. DO NOT use oil or soap as it will attract more dust and jam up. Those are OK on external sliders not internal like this model uses. The curved mast makes raising the main seem harder on the lines because of the curve so it may NOT have been all the way up. There also picky with line stretching so old lines tend to make for droopy sails. No idea why but several hunter owners told us and after we replaced them it fixed it. As a side note my OEM main would bag up at the clew. The new one from Bacon sails was cut for a loose foot (less heal, more speed - so they say) and it's not baggy anymore there, it's being pushed out. But with a fresh sail and no lazy jacks gathering up and flaking is a PITA to the point I'll sail with just the 110 or 150 and leave the main racked sometimes. On this model boat 5-7kts is top speed under sail and if you don't get the sails in balance they weather up something fierce (run just the main and she's easy, run the Genoa or Jib and she'll fight at high winds). Also this boat was designed to be tender and weather up easy so reefing the main at 15+ mph is a must. Your just burning energy leaning over at that point. Like you said, it's a great coastal cruiser and for me and the wife that's our ideal boat, or the 40.5 or 380... But the low draft and Yanmar with all the space below - perfect for the Caribe! The most important thing I've learned in 22 years sailing... Don't leave the dock without the beer and make sure the gear inside is secure. You can spend hours trimming but as long as your OK with your speed and level of heeling what's it matter right? Although once you get a Cat, heeling is no more and securing the cargo doesn't take that into account. I wish I had the $$ for a Cat. Up here a decent Gemini will run $75k and for that money I can get a fully equipped 2000+ 380 or even a 42 Passage. But the Gemini would sail circles around it just not anywhere near the wind (Cat's don't work well between 40* either side of wind unless they have dagger boards). Still, in the Bahamas a Cat is much better due to the shallow water. Cheers!!

Loved the boat tour! Looks so different inside to our Catalina 36. Audio ... bane of my existence ... Ryan, I was curious about the hand held audio - are you recording all the audio separately then synching after, or is it just as backup? I think I spotted a Zoom H1 maybe? Cheers! -Kate

Hi Kate! Yeah it is a Zoom H1. I'm finding it works better indoors. It picks up too many other noises outdoors. We're aiming to get some brand (probably Rode) of shotgun mic for the outdoor sailing stuff. I was only recording stuff where I knew I cared about audio with the H1. Syncing in post is sort of a hassle because I have to find the clip that goes with the audio. But after that I use Final Cut Pro to automatically sync the audio and that works really well.

Ah, that makes sense. Yeah, outdoor audio is tough. There doesn't seem to be a deadcat big enough to deal with sailing wind! The Rode Video Pro is awesome, mine is unfortunately currently broken, but it has the best sound of anything I've tried.

If the mainsheet is too tight when you raise the main, the sail may not go up all the way...or there's a problem at the masthead or, as you found before, a reef line may not have been released. Not sure about the outhaul...that would seem to pull the foot of the sail aft and possibly make the situation worse (but not fatal).

Hey Brian, Thanks for the comment. We might not have eased the mainsheet when raising the main. I'd never even thought about how that might hinder things. I'll definitely keep that in mind in the future. Thanks for the tip!!

Same for the boom vang. Both should be eased when raising the main. If either is tight that restricts the boom's ability to raise that last few inches as the main goes skyward.

Another possibility, since it is a charter boat, is that a car is missing from the sail somewhere around where you get the baggy spot. I couldn't tell from the video but sometimes with a sailboat that gets a ton of use the sail could be missing a car because one got stuck in the track and the user just kept cranking on the halyard...something eventually gives. Also, was there a downhaul on your tack? Sometimes there is a line called a cunningham. That video was really useful thanks! I don't think that boat had a either a downhaul on the tack or a cunningham. I think our only option for that boat might've been to check the status of cars. Thanks for the insight!

Nice video! I have a 37.5 on pier 11 at Waterford Harbor in Kemah. When raising the mainsail did you release the main sheet and boom vang? That may help with the bulge at the tack. If that does not solve the problem a down haul or cunningham should take some of the bulge out. Next time you're in Kemah drop by pier 11 for a beer!

For our ASA courses we used South Coast Sailing Adventures. I've heard from some other folks who took courses at other schools in the area, I can't remember which, who said they wished they had gone to our school after watching our videos. Hope that helps!

With your skills you should stay with a monohull, as when you get into broad reach / high winds, you'll be glad you didn't get a multihull....it will eat you up.

Could be a few reasons for that bulge. Doesn't look like you were in too much wind, which could cause that bulge near the tack of the main. You could loosen the outhaul a little to put more belly in the sail to fill it fuller in light winds. You want the sail flatter, ie., pull the outhaul in higher winds. Also the boat is older so the sail could be nearing the end of it's life and just be stretched out. Looks like you got your microphone stuck inside of a tribble! Keep making the videos and enjoying the sailing!

Oh you need a cat for sure, so much more room for your height, I enjoy monohull sailing, but I love our cat for the room & openness, but it's what you can afford & ultimately comfortable with.. Don't wear a cap below, you'll smash your head on something, have witnessed this many times!

Hello, we have a spirited 380, we bought second hand about two years ago. They are An Australian company named Schonning, come in kit form for owner/builders. I follow a Cat called Roam, really good you tube Chanel, they have the 48 foot version, we are so envious because it's the ducks nuts for speed, room & capability for long passages! Have just found you guys, so don't know much about yourselves, but I like the fact your grounded & funny naturally, good luck with it all, stay true to yourselves & get used to the critical few & the nasty know nothing ones online!
