BRASS FROM THE PAST: Two German Hunting Horns.
The Clewing Pocket Hunting Horn or “Taschenjadghorn” is in the key of Bb and wrapped in green leather. It is coiled six-times around in two layers and fits in the palm of my hand. Made in the 1950s by B&S (Blech & Signalinstrumentenfabrik), Markneukirchen.
The Furst-Pless Hunting Horn or “Jagdhorn” is in the key of Bb and wrapped in green leather. Furst-Pless signifies the origins under the late 19th century Prussian rein of Hans Heinrich IX, the “Furst Von Pless” or Prince of the duchy of Pless in Upper Silesia, a region of Poland today. He oversaw the hunt for Emperor Wilhelm II. It is double-coiled and probably made in the 1960s or 70s by Bohm + Meinl, Geretsried. Listen to sounds from the past. Probably 70 years ago more or less.
Furst-Pless Hunting Horn:
Jager-Marsch ( Hunter March)
Clewing Pocket Hunting Horn:
Furst-Pless-Horn-Marsch ( Prince Pless Horn March)

That was the "notification sound" that the postman played in the main square of the ancient towns of Europe.

Saw one, I forget which size, in a music store in Regensburg. Being a trumpeter from way back (80s-90s), it's on my list.

The Clewing Horn sounded better than I expected! Does it need higher pressure than it's elder brother?
@brassfromthepast5149

Thank you very much. Yes the Clewing horn takes a bit more effort to play then the other Huntinghorn. It is somewhat like playing a piccolo trumpet. But once you get used to it it is not that hard. Thank you very much for watching.

You just made our day! My bugle boy has the larger Fürst Pless Horn, but that mini one looks and sounds awesome. My boy pointed out that it looks like a donut. 😂 If you are interested in the sheet music for all the German Hunting Horn Calls (and Germans are pretty serious about that 😉), let me know and I’ll send the link.

I finally got around to making a video with these hunting horns. I thought y’all would really enjoy it. The small pocket Hunting horn does look like a doughnut, ha ha, I never thought about that. Yes, please send me the link to the hunting horn calls. I do have some of them but I would love to look at the link if you can send it. I’m very glad that you all enjoyed watching the video.

@@brassfromthepast5149 While the description and titles are all in German, the notation system is universal, I guess. Here is the link for pdf format that I printed out for my bugler: www.noejagdverband.at/wp-content/uploads/Deutsche-Jagdsignale.pdf

@@brassfromthepast5149 if my bugle boy and I ever figure it out, we can do a virtual duet in harmony. The greeting (Begrüßung) has six different harmonies, four for hunting horns and two for French horns. Not sure if we can get together enough horn players for that kind of undertaking. 😂

@@cordulaevelyn1 that would be awesome! I would love to hear and see it. I think there are a few free apps that allow you to record and multitrack with yourself. And I imagine there are some really good ones out there that you probably have to pay for. I eventually want to start making videos like whenever I have time.

Great demonstration. Are the mouthpieces similar to trumpet mouthpieces?
@brassfromthepast5149
@brassfromthepast5149 Месяц назад
The mouthpiece on the larger Huntinghorn is very similar to a trumpet mouthpiece. However, the mouthpiece on the small Huntinghorn is one that only fits that particular horn. It is a very small mouthpiece. Thank you very much for watching and for your interest.

Are furst pless horns similar to bugles?
@brassfromthepast5149
@brassfromthepast5149 8 месяцев назад
Yes, they are similar to bugles as far as the notes that can be played on them. But of course they are totally different in the way they look and the way they sound. Thank you very much for watching.

How similar would these be to hunting horns used in the 19th century?

@brassfromthepast5149
@brassfromthepast5149 Месяц назад
These hunting horns are relatively easy to play. Very similar to playing a bugle. So if you have ever played a bugle you should not have any problem at all. They play quite well. But if you are new at playing a brass instrument this would be a good one to start on. It is relatively easy to play. Good luck and thanks so much for watching.

Not sure if RU-vid lets me share another link in the comment section, but I posted the closing ceremony that our Troop did at Fort Point National Historic Site in San Francisco after a 10 mile hike across the Golden Gate Bridge and back. It was very windy, but my bugle boy could be heard anyway. The scouts were just struggling to get that big flag down and properly folded. 😅 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-edZTYAHX8G0.html

This is a great video. Thank you so much for sharing it. Your bugle boy sounds great. Yes, I would say that they definitely had a difficult time with that flag because of the wind. But they did a great job. And he is sounding really good. Tell him to keep up the great job and keep practicing. Thanks again very much for watching.

Why would they wrap it in leather, for better grip? Or just for aesthetics? I think it makes them uglier.
@cordulaevelyn1
@cordulaevelyn1 Год назад
It’s to protect the metal from the oils of the human skin, which can cause damage to it.
@brassfromthepast5149
@brassfromthepast5149 Год назад
I imagine it is for a better grip when holding the horn and since it is usually cold outside during the hunting season it would be an insulator so that it would not be so cold to the touch. Thank you very much for your interest and for watching.

Also to prevent corrosion , as forests tend to hold a higher humidity in the air. I have never learned so much about hunting horns until now. 😂
