Fun story about this song. Dave Mustaine from Megadeth was in Metallica when this song was written and he wrote a good chunk of it. When he formed Megadeth he took the parts he wrote and changed the title and lyrics and played it almost twice as fast! It's called Mechanix. Be aware that the intro is different. Enjoy!!

Mechanix is on metallicas first Demo with james singing it along with 3 other songs dave wrote the music to ( phantom , militia and jump in the fire ) Dave had music he called the four horsemen but it ended up in the song ride the lightning when after dave left james took lyrics he was writing for it and used them on the mechanix instead

People remember Mechanix and The Four Horsemen because of similar sound but most completely forget Motorbreath (Metallica) and FFF (Megadeth) belonging to the same bandwagon.

Hahahaha, the story is that Dave and Cliff were jamming to Skynyrd and playing a faster version of Sweet Home and Lars wanted them to slow it down, not realizing that it was more or less the same riff. Of course, Dave and Cliff obliged 😂

I always thought it was weird that they mention 3 of the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse and then threw in time. They omitted war for some reason.

I loved Metallica’s Garage Days EP. You should check out their cover of Diamond Head’s song Helpless. It’s one of my favorite covers ever. All the songs on that record we’re great, and led a whole generation or two in discovering Diamond Head, Holocaust, Killing Joke, Budgie and the Misfits. All those bands broke up originally and reformed later, probably due to Metallica’s fans bringing them new attention. Except Killing Joke, which never went away and were a force all by themselves.

Saw them in '87 with Cliff. Kirk only played the solos on that album. All the rhythm is James. Also Dave Mustaine from Megadeth wrote most of that song. He re recorded it as 'Mechanix'. Y'all should check it out Great reaction. Enjoy the show 🎸

I saw them in San Fran back in December and Daytona in November and they honestly sound the best I have heard from them in the last 20-25 years! Ohhh, no applauses at the end of one of their anthem ?? 2 things: - All the rythm guitar is recorded by James Hetfield... Kirk Hammet only play them along him in live concert... but he played the more-than-amazing solos ^^ - the son is co-composed by Dave Mustain (later formed Megadeth)... I think it forced Kirk Hammet to give the very best he could at the time ^^

It’s funny you mention his voice. On this debut record he was more like controlled screaming than singing. He said as much in a 1992 interview about how he really learned to sing after the Master of puppets album. Listen to the black album and you can hear the difference. I love all his vocals across all their albums.

Dave Mustaine wrote the original version - 'Mechanix'... he recorded it on Megadeth's first album. After Mustaine was fired, James Hetfield re-wrote the lyrics about the 'Four Horsemen' of the apocalypse, and added some sections to the song... it was recorded w/ Kirk Hammett on lead guitar, Cliff Burton (bass) & Lars Ulrich (drums) in 1983 for their debut album "Kill 'em all" ... Metallica were very young - in their early 20's when the first album was recorded. Of the 5 thrash metal bands debuting between 1983 - '85 (Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, & Exodus) Metallica's "Kill 'em all" was the best record for sure 🤘🤘🔥🔥 The song has some similarities w/ the song 'Steeler' by Judas Priest (who influenced early Metallica) from the 1980 album 'British steel'.

This was actually written By Dave Mustaine (Megadeath) originally when he was their lead guitarist. James and Kirk changed it up a little for the album after Dave was fired.

8:39 - the first time I ever heard that bass note it was on a very loud system and it sounded heavier that anything I had ever heard in my life to that point. Cliff Burton, throwing filthy bass drops into metal songs waaaaay before bass drops were ever a thing
