We compare the Pentax 645NII versus the Contax 645. These are some of the last medium format film bodies ever produced. It's really interesting to look at these two film cameras. And why do we choose these film cameras? Well, because these really are the two go to cameras for wedding photographers and the two most popular. Why shoot film and which camera is better for you? Is paying more for the Contax worth it? Let us know which you would choose. #PentaxVsContax #BestFilmCamera #MediumFormatFilmCamera

I just want to fix something. Pentax's lens is not 80mm. It is SMC Pentax 75mm f/2.8 There is no such thing as an 80mm lens. Quite interesting that you guys wrote everywhere :) But thanks for the video. Pretty good comparison.

I chose the Pentax 645 for weddings in the early 90's. couldn't find enough difference in lens systems that made a difference below 20x30 prints. I could buy 2 bodies at less than one Hassy or Contax. no need for changable backs. Added a 645n body around 2000. At that time it had better metering and better SF than most high end 35 mm. Still using both bodies.

If you ever get the urge to pull out the Pentax again, it would be fun to outfit it with the other end of the Pentax quality spectrum. The FA 645 120mm is a good competitor to the Zeiss and Hasselblad options. You don't get the bokeh, but it's a very nice lens and an extremely flattering focal length for the face.

Since lenses are the deciding factor with film cameras, you might want to add the information, that there are various possibilities to add F2 lenses to the Pentax 645 system, though they are manual focus then. Why is that important? Most wedding photographers use manual focus even on the Contax. And the focus confirmation function on the Pentax 645 system makes focusing super easy. That part was kind of missing in the video. A fully working focus confirmation function for manual focusing lenses is a big deal! Taking into account the price difference, the relatively better availability of the P645 system on the market and the higher durability of the P645 system (lesser prone to electronic death), the P645 system suddenly shines in a different light. Possibilities of adapted lenses include 90mm F2 Projection lenses (ISCO or Schneider Cinelux), an adapted Leica Summicron 90mm F2 and the Noritar 66 80mm F2 (also Planar Design).

in my experience what really matters is first thing first: sharpness and then bokeh, (with almost everything else you can deal in post) - for what about the latter Planar is clearly nicer but if your shot is out of focus the whole test is quite useless. By the way I don't think that today anyone would choose any of these cameras for the AF system, it's a lot safer to focus manually than having your pictures blurry. Beautiful girl!!!!!!!!!

645n is a great value for money camera with Auto-Focus, the lenses aren't the best available but they are more that great, I always felt they lack colour rendition compared to Contax and Mamiya and contrast in b&w usually was stronger on Contax. If I'd be honest though the auto focus on the 645n alongside with the price it came made the 645n much much more appealing. Mamiya was better in most cases but just for a margin and with a higher price tag. The only reason I would prefer Mamiya over Pentax would be the backs and the digital compatability, but not everyone cares for those

Regarding lens contrast and warmth, I would suggest you shoot a reversal film like E100 and then make your judgment. Using color neg film, you’re leaving way too much up to how it’s scanned, especially if the scanning system is using any auto functions. Reversal film scanned on a profiled drum scanner will reveal the truth. Personally, I never use the 75mm f/2.8 on my P645Nii....it’s more of a kit lens in my view. I’ll use either the 80-160mm zoom (yes, it’s only an f/4) or the 6x7 105mm f/2.4 adapted to the 645 if I’m really going for shallow depth of field.

This is another of those YT videos proporting to compare two 645 camera systems as though anyone in their right mind would actually choose one of them. Look to cost: A Pentax 645N (not the NII here, which adds nothing) with a selection of commonly used lenses would cost about $2000. Assuming you could actually find a similarly equipped Contax 645 system, try $10k+. Now find it: Pentax 645 equipment was widely sold and is fairly available on ebay and elsewhere. Owing to its nose-bleed prices and short sales period, it would be difficult to assemble a Contax 645 system. While the Contax proposed to offer a wide range of lenses and accessories, in fact most of them were rarely or never sold. Repairs: the Pentax was sold for years in one form or another. There are large qualities of units out there. Since stripping parts from another body is the only source for repairs these days, that is still practical with the Pentax. Few of the Contax 645 were ever sold. There are none out there for parts, and no repairmen knowledgeable of their repair. Almost all shops will refuse to even look at one for repair. Both have significant electronic controls, but the Contax is totally dependent on its electronics. If any part of that system fails, you immediately own $10k worth of brick-a-brack. The lenses on the Contax are superb, but they aren't really Zeiss; they were made by Kyocera under licence from Zeiss, so lets loose the mystical "uber-mench" about them. Finally, at its prioce points, the Contax was purchased only by working pros. They are worked to the edge of death, and even new, they were fairly unreliable because of their complexity. In concept, I always loved the Contax 645, but I would not buy one for any reason. .

Talk about misleading/click bait title. I was expecting a video of an actual wedding. On that note, with the price of film, scanning, and the Contax 645, it is not practical to photograph a wedding on 120 anymore. 135 is more than adequate for weddings, plus with some patience, one can pick up a pro body, a back up body with some fast pro glass for no more than $800 tops. I have and continue to photograph weddings on 35mm since 2003, worked for both Ritz and Samy's Camera as a lab tech and to this day, I cannot tell the difference between a 120 scan and a 135 scan (from a Frontier scanner at 5000px). Not to mention the average client doesn't bother printing anything larger than an 8x10. Personally, I believe the most crucial part of photographing a wedding on film is by far who and how your film is scanned. pentax records metadata on the fringe as well, you just have to activate it with a combination of buttons to show D on the screen, perfectly legible on my scans, so this is not true they are absolutely illegible, besides, the photo on 3:20 has the same object size and distance as on 4:40 and the difference in bokeh is so different so on the second one you must have had done something with pentax and you shot on higher values than 2.8 later on, it is definitely better on bokeh than shown in the second part photos
