Hi Seth! I watched this first about two years ago, and last weekend finally began Keeping the Bolivia chapter for my group. Some great tips there (the Formless Spawn attacking halfway down this broken, dark well worked as a particularly good cliffhanger). A few personal experiences I wanted to add, that might help others: One of my group had Animal Handling, which they used to befriend the flame pistol monkey. A native man in the medical camp has vague knowledge of the Sleeping One, but is stated to largely talk in cryptic aphorisms. That is great fun to roleplay - as is the paranoid nurse who has seen too much of one of the antagonist officers. I had to drop numerous hints to my group about the spare radio and using it. They were reluctant to do so, given the medical camp's unit had been destroyed by the soldiers, and then kept forgetting they had it. One of my heroes failed a pushed roll to investigate the battlefield and ended up treading on one of those landmines you suggested, activating it (but not stepping off). Rather than get his legs blown off, the Resourceful grease monkey character did a 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', jury-rigged some sandbags and displaced his weight on the pressure plate. All in all, some great tips. We look forward to the second part of Boliva soon!

Spoilers!! Wait, we could have gotten an air drop?! I wasn't there for the first session due to needing to go to the doctors and stuff, that would have been so fun! Also my keeper gave Quinton the best voice, I was half expecting a joke impression of the transphobe Ben, but instead we got this total badass who even my telekinetic lesbian mad scientist loved! Yeah, we got a flame thrower, a truck, some grenades and more rope. I got hit by the ray in my leg and thankfully I wear jeans so it didn't matter much, but it was something to get used to. the snake wasn't too hard, it failed to hit any of us and since our keeper ruled that telekinesis is an actually useful skill, I was able to float a grenade into the things throat and blow its brain up from the inside. I nearly killed the mummy in my paranoia, until I was reminded of the mission, so we ended up tying her up and escaping.

Hi Seth! I know it's been years since you started this series, and I can't remember if I've commented on it before, but I just wanted to let you know this is my comfort series. Any time I'm feeling down or mad or anything, I can just click on this playlist and feel better. I also listen to it when I'm working on projects or there's nothing else popping up in my feed. It's like coming back to a favorite movie time and time again and I just wanted to thank you for that.

I've listened to this series at least 3 times all the way through. I just started running it for my players, and this series helped me understand the overall plot and scenarios so that all I had to do was skim each chapter. Soooo helpful for someone who starts reading, reads half a page, and then realizes they've been watching guys build pools for two hours.

"She ain't going to be wearing low cut dresses for a while." Clearly she's not seen the Xcom 2 fanbase. ...though I guess that game won't exist for 80 years... I do like that the players were more excited for the air drop than the mummy. Hopefully there was a sandwich with all those chains and boxes. I guess calling in airstrikes/air support is one of the few ways to have NPCs do things in a game without taking the glory away from the player, especially in an old setting where you can make the players use flares to mark the target.

So what exactly constitutes "destroying" a ward? The book seems to treat it like just breaking the capstone, but then what is the point of having a pit 300 metres deep with a Formless Spawn sitting at the bottom? It would take a wee while for the Formless Spawn to crawl all the way up that massively deep hole, so it seems like a bad idea for defence, if your security guard is 300m down in a pit and his first warning of intruders is the jagged remnants of a gigantic stone manhole cover raining down on him. But then Seth acted like it was somehow necessary to climb down each of these ridiculously deep holes? I get the first one, for the exposition from the murals, but I don't understand why you'd want to climb down all of these things? Is there something I'm missing? Some sort of McGuffin that has to be destroyed at the bottom? Sorry if I'm being obtuse. I just can't seem to figure out how "destroying" these wards actually works.
@Thiabolicoo
@Thiabolicoo 3 месяца назад
It's just the cap stones. It really is kinda lame, specially since you don't even have to destroy all 5 to enter the temple, just 2 to expose the door and some dinamite to open it.

Love this Seth! I massively prepped for this, every Bolivian solider had a name and specific appearance (one was a total psycho with bleary eyes and better shotgun skills than the rest) - whenever they encountered any I rolled a d20 and chose them. I also wrote down a bunch of phrases that Guerrero would say for example "A man who drinks fire remains thirsty" and "A wise man with no ears is blind". I named every person in the relief expedition and it really made things come to life, as each one had a back story in case the players wanted to explore that. A bit more work but I hate faceless NPCs!

@Seth So, I'm running this, and things are going pretty well so far. One thing your comment about the 3 doctors and 6 nurses really brought home is just how many people are present in the scenario and how few of them are even mentioned. I ended up creating about 4 pages of notes for injured patients and refugees in the med tent and other minor NPCs that the PC's are sure to want to interact with. And even then, I missed the fact that there probably needs to be a cook at the mess tent the first time the PC's went in there and I had no real idea how food was served. I wish someone writing these things would realize that players don't really know which characters are important and at the least want names for everyone, not the least because they are already convinced half the camp is disguised serpent people. Watching your review for a third time, I'm thinking about this whole 1000' deep hole with the broken stairs and my 6th sense as a GM is flashing, "Why?" It doesn't feel to me like there is anything in the way of fun involved in making jump and climb checks on stairs 500 feet above the floor. Making those checks 50 feet above the floor might be fun, but 500 feet is just pointless because no interesting complications develop as a result. Thoughts about actually making the failure mode here actually interesting? Or if the failure mode isn't interesting, why am I even making climb and jump checks that just result in an anti-climatic SPLAT!? Being eaten by a 100' foot long snake is interesting. Making a series of routine skill checks that are basically save or die is not.

"H.R." is an anachronism. Companies weren't so mealy-mouthed back in the Thirties. They didn't call it "Human Resources," they called it "Personnel." I've found this to be one of the challenges of running games several decades in the past: anachronistic language and habits. "Atomic" instead of "nuclear." "Personnel" instead of "human resources." Shooting pistols one-handed instead of two-handed. (The two-handed Weaver stance wasn't invented until the Fifties. Before that, pistol shooters were discouraged from using a two-handed "squaw hold.") "Access" as a noun and never a verb. "Gay" meaning "cheerful" or "happily smiling" instead of "homosexual," etc., etc.

Have you heard of the two Curse of the Yellow Sign adventures? They are a pair of adventures dealing with the Yellow King; one dealing with Nazis at a dig site, and the others dealing with actors finding a play. The only issue with it is that I hear it’s heavy roleplay and low on anything else. In fact the description for the first adventure states it has no mythos books, no mythos creatures, and no library use roles. Just normal humans exposed to the reality of the universe.

Hey Seth! I'm getting ready to start this campaign. As you've already indicated, opening the chapter with a firefight is a great hook, but it presents a lot of problems. I think I'll open with a serpent person sniper fatally wounding Dr. Ursini, the let the scene unfold into something like sniper scene from Saving Private Ryan or Full Metal Jacket. Ursini will try to disclose the mission as he's bleeding out in the rainy setting. The group will have to struggle between saving Ursini and finding/killing the sniper. Once the sniper is eliminated, the group uncovers the fact that the sniper is not quite human and the wrecked transport sphere is nearby. The soldier presence in the Aid Camp doesn't make much sense, so I'm going to eliminate that. The serpent person patrols will be a looming threat outside of the sanctuary of the Aid Camp Karnaash may enter the camp with a patrol to investigate the intent of the relief effort. The group will get the impression that Karnaash is bad news and that the patrol effort doesn't add up as the fighting has moved on to another area. Any, those are my thoughts.

One of my players decided to make their character with the dreamer archetype and cult leader occupation and gave themselves telekinesis. While they came to the second ward they came across a group of serpent persons... serpent people? If and when they get the $40,000 reward from One in Darkness, what should I raise their CR to? Any suggestions would be super helpful and greatly appreciated. Thanks
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky 6 лет назад
Hey Joe, this all depends on how they split the money up and then how much goes into each of their "Assets." Of course things like a new house and car will all go into assets (as those can be sold), as will money in the bank. But a trip to Europe or a trunk of cash beneath the mattress won't. Once the money is in Assets, you compare it to the minimum Assets under each Credit Rank bracket. ($500 for Average, $25,000 for Wealthy, etc.) Now the Keeper Guide (96-97) says the player rolls D10 and add those to their Credit until they pass the Credit Score required for that Credit Bracket (10 for Average. 50 for Wealthy, etc.) If they're shooting for let's say Wealthy, they just keep adding D10 rolls until they hit 50 or higher on their Credit score. Now that could mean the results after adding come to 50-59, then that's the new Credit score. The other way to do it might be once you know what bracket of assets they fall into, divide the assets by what the Credit multiplier for assets is for that rank ($50 for Average, $500 for Wealthy) and use that as the character's new Credit score.
@ishmiel21
@ishmiel21 6 лет назад
Thanks for getting back to me. The examples you provided are the reasons I asked my question. The way 7E breaks down Credit Rating doesn't make sense. The examples are just too broad. For example, someone with $10,000 in assets would have a Credit Rating of...? Thanks again and keep up the fantastic work.
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky 6 лет назад

20:00 I'm preparing to DM this campaing and having a really hard time with that part. The more I read the module, the less sense it makes. Why did Karnassh even attacked them, if the serpent people tolerated the people at the camp? And HOW do they expect things to go once the players get attacked and then find more enemies at the camp? I don't see a scenario where players chill at the camp and role play with all that people while serpent people and soldiers just look at them from afar. Why wouldn't the soldiers attack them? How do you communicate to the players that the serpent people decided to just watch their moves after just trying to kill them 5 minutes ago? I know it's a DM's job to fill in the blanks, but it's such a weird prompt, it looks like bad writing. I wanted to be preparing music and maps, and not fixing plot holes.
@SSkorkowsky

I assume the attack was because the Inner Night knew they were from Caduceus, meaning that they are an actual threat. Of course it'll be a few chapters before the PCs learn of the Inner Night or all that.

Great and informative video as ever. I do have a question, in the past I have redone, Masks and orient express as modern day adventure campaigns, I'm thinking of doing the same with serpent, however I don't have a copy yet, how much work do you think would be needed to convert it to a modern setting? Thanks in advance Seth.

I want to play Call of Cthululu. I used to play a Call of Cthululu MUD in the late 90s & early 00s. I don't know any DMs that run it. I might have to DM it myself, but I really want to experience the stories as a player

Great first part ! As it turned out, I'm Gming the campaign too (still in chapter 1). You gave me some great ideas for the next session :). Quick question though, i'm a complete noob on photoshop, how did you manage to edit the ward map ?
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky 6 лет назад
Thanks. I edited it with a very liberal use of the cloning tool. First to clean up the middle so I had a series of 3 uninterrupted stair spirals in a row, then I moved the bottom floor down to the correct distance, and then pasted the stairs over and over until they met the floor. I'm not very good with Photoshop, but I can usually fumble my way to an ugly version of what I'm wanting.

I'm really excited about this campaign. I've not bought the book yet, but your videos are amazing and very helpful and I'll probably buy this adventure very soon. But there is something I want to ask to you. Having played as the keeper with this campaign, do you think that the "snake" theme can be changed with something else? Something more subtle or creepy? I really like the "evil snake" vibe, but my players have already met yuan-ti and other serpent monsters in D&D.
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky 2 года назад
Anything can be changed, but the snake theme might prove difficult to do without hurting it. It's deeply woven and comes up the more the campaign goes on, such as the Oklahoma chapter, and the Snake Island chapter. Even the title is a reference to the symbol of a Caduceus as well as the plot of two factions of serpent people at war.
@filippooliveri5347
@filippooliveri5347 2 года назад
@@SSkorkowsky well the main obstacle would be Snake Island and Caduceus, cause I could swap snake people with Mi-Go and other things would be quite easy to change. Mushroom-drug-church in Oklahoma, fungal infections instead of scales, mind-controlling spores, mushroom-based medicine, etc. Well I'll think about It, thank you for your advice and for all your videos!

Lol... I just finished a 100 year wargame playing argentina 1900 to 1999 .... during the chaco war my goal was to take about 20 miles depth of teritory and provide some support to Paraguay .... ... I got bored after the first year and a half and just invaded the whole of Bolivia... ... 3 years later I got bored of Bolivia and gave them their country back ... sold them loads of surplus weapons... pointed them at Chile. . Sat back and had a few years of laughs as they wore each other down... ended up having loads of fun just manipulating other countries whilst only respecting Brazil and a few small elements of others.... ... err... the flying boat behind jack the NPC... what model is that... ???? Looks a bit later than chaco period ... but it's a few years since I played it out... I used blackburn Iris ... That's a pure monoplane with forward nacelles rather than a a biplane with a push pull arrangement. ... looks sort of 1936 plus to me

I know you don't suggest using this in regular Call of Cthulhu, but what if it was an experienced/heavily leveled party that hasn't gone straight up nuts and/or died yet? I want to make this a pit stop on the way to Antarctica since Beyond The Mountains of Madness has you sail past Latin America.

My players decided to play the flute in the aid camp before making any Cthulhu mythos rolls. They then ran away when they heard the formless spawn, leaving the camp undefended(in their defense they did tell "everyone run" but yeah) Once they heard gunshots they ran back, but it was almost an unmitigated disaster.

I'd be interested to hear, either now or when you finish the review, how you think this campaign would do being adapted to other games. I got that it's not a great out-of-the-box fit for CoC7, but how might you change it to work? What about Modiphius' Conan system, or even D&D 5E? Just some broad thoughts would be fine.
@gnarthdarkanen7464
@gnarthdarkanen7464 6 лет назад
Don't know really how Seth would recommend... BUT for my two cents', I use Gurps as my go-to for "base stat' equivalents"... What that does is (once you're familiar with Gurps systemically) gives you basic construction for EVERYTHING in a 3d6 / 1D20 statistical system. AND there's a section in Third edition next to skills about the actual percentile stat's related to the 3D6 base rolls... SO you can just as easily automatically deduce a percentile if you need... Once you CAN construct everything in-game according to some Gurpsian basic equivalent, other games are pretty self-explanatory on either a 5% increment (D20's) or through percentiles otherwise... You CAN also find a statistical monstrosity of choice on the web (an app) related to die rolls and equivalent spreads, deviations, medians, and so forth in all the glorious mathemagical speak that confuses the sh*t out of me, too. The apps are good, as long as YOU have a reasonable idea of what systemic you want out of the mix... and equivalencies can be managed that way a little more directly, even if the reasoning behind it seems about as clear as mud... or tar. The cute part of learning Gurps is that it is UNIVERSAL in scope. It's designed to be able to build absolutely anything... so when faced with two systems that are fairly unique to themselves... say CoC and D&D, Gurps gives game-based build information for most everything required, or some reasonable starting point about how to approach building that mechanic into Gurpsian RPG's... There's no requirement for more than the "Basic Set" to do this, so you get one book and it lets you (with some brain and elbow flexing) build anything you like, in any theme you like, and any bloody way you like it. In any case, I hope it helps. ;o)
