Wotton under Edge is a small market town on the border of Gloucestershire with the neighbouring county of South Gloucestershire. Early records mention the Anglo-Saxon Royal Charter of King Edmund when in AD 940 he did lease four hides of land in Wudetun to Eadric.
The original town was burnt down during the reign of King John (1199 - 1216) and was rebuilt in 1252. Today Wotton is best described as a rambling town with much to explore during a two-hour visit. Much remains of the past, which sit very comfortable with the present day.
For a town of its size, it is well served with pubs, a hotel and quite a few restaurants and takeaways. For social groups there are the Scouts and Girl Guides, a gardening club and a swimming pool completed in 1961. Following the closure of the cinema in 2002 volunteers raised the money to open one of the first digital cinemas in the country.
