Two Junkyard Champion Generators (Part 2) - Scrap Metal?

Last week I was able to get one of these Champion generators up and running. What about the other? These two Champion generators were picked up from a transfer station. They were destined to be melted down for their value in raw material. Both are missing a lot of parts and one has no compression. Will they run?

One way to pop dents from metal tanks is to partially fill with water and put into a freezer with the dent facing down. Worked great on dirt bikes and three wheelers.
@danmackintosh6325
@danmackintosh6325 2 года назад
Also, low pressure air can be useful for larger dents with less of a crease to them. (low pressure being the operative word here, above a few psi they can deform... Actually, Isle of Man TT racers & other endurance riders have been known to "blow the tank" in order to gain a little extra capacity/cut out a pit stop on a "stock" bike)
@Hugo_Overthere
@Hugo_Overthere 2 года назад
Since these dents are in the top of the tank I would make holes and pop the dents out with a screw and slide hammer. Fill with filled epoxy and sand it smooth.

I recently bought a Champion generator (due to the power outage that hit Texas this past winter), works fine, but it is always good to know about how it all works in case something craps out down the road. Your very informative and educational videos have done much to bolster my confidence should I ever have to tackle that generator problem should it ever arise. Thank you for taking the time to make your videos and share your knowledge and experience with us generator newbies, it is very appreciated!! (And yes, I DID subscribe to your channel! @@jcondon1 The governor just signed some legislation to help prevent that from happening again, frankly I think it is a bunch of gesturing and lip flapping contrived to make it look like our government is doing something but in effect isn't going to make a bit of difference because as you and I know, it is hard to control mother nature or the free electrical market. Our latest issues now are outages due to this heat wave (power has already gone out for half an hour one night) and ERCOT (manages our electric grid here in Texas) is asking people to cut back on their consumption. I think when it comes to Texas, backup generators are going to become the rule and not the exception.

Nicely done James. Those Champion models were really good and sold well. I remember Costco selling them a number of years back. There was a recall on that model genny for a fuel leak if my memory is correct. Champion corrected the problem and continued producing them . The nicest feature was the remote start. Too bad they do not make that model anymore. So again for the 75 bucks you spent you now have two excellent running gennys. Great job👍👍

Great videos. I had a similar Champion, NIB, for my Toy Hauler TT. I drove 20 hours to Burning Man, unpacked a mountain of gear in 100 degree heat, fired up the brand new generator, and it overcharged all my circuits. Black smoke was pouring out of the fuse compartment like a train locomotive, and was moments away from a major fire. The circuits were fried. I was now stuck in the desert for 7 days at BM with no A/C and a dead TT. I was able to jury rig a battery tender to the 12V system for interior lights and water pumps, but it was a long week of finagling to limp by for the bare basics of running water and some lights.

That's just the way of the world, I guess. It's the same over here, and the usual reasons given are that it would cost more in labour than it would in parts to repair - Cheaper to replace as a whole, and to add insult to injury, you can't generally buy these returned machines, so you can't 'have a go' at fixing them yourself though there are companies who can buy them, refurbish them and sell on as refurbished/new other.

James, the rule I always went by for capacitors is that you can always go higher in voltage but you will want the same mF value. awesome troubleshooting as always
@KuntalGhosh
@KuntalGhosh Год назад
Depends on your application.. sometimes u may want to increase the capacitance to improve the product. But one thing to keep in mind is the Chinese make a lot of fake capacitors like we could see at 12:00 mins where the 2nd module had a questionable looking nipon chemicon that was too small in physical dimensions for its specifications. It was always a good idea to measure with a capacitance & internal resistance meter before using any questionable china cap. They generally extract capacitors from ewaste and in the process of yanking them out they sometimes dent the capacitor with pliers so in order to fix that they fill the dents with wax and put on a new heatshrink wrap with false specifications and manufactur name. Most of the time they put fake nipon chemicon or nichicon or any other popular brand of capacitor's shrink wrap.. this is why when i need big caps i pay the extra to order from reputable sources like mouser , digikey , lcsc , element 14 etc.
@MillersMotors
@MillersMotors Год назад
@@KuntalGhosh surprising about the reused cap market!! I like to say the voltage tidbit on the capacitors because it’s the insulation rating- so really in a like for like situation, the capacitance is the value we need to keep constant. But as you say sometimes you need more or less capacitance, I had a customer request a single phase motor to start slower to have a softer start up so we decreased the start cap 150mfd

Another great job James! I also enjoyed that discussion you had on Ken’s channel. And I also agree with you, that cheap digital caliper from Amazon you stated that is your favorite, Is mine too!! Keep the videos coming!!

It helps, I'm working on two of the same brand. Just a lot older. Good job!

That's wild how few hours were on that second generator. Must have been a crib death on the AVR. Champion is a great company with excellent customer service. If you ever get one of these and you need a part only found on one of these machines, don't hesitate to give them a call. From my experience they support their products.

Another great video. It is surprising at how easy the unsuspecting DIY fixer can be caught out with the different AVR's that are put in generators these days. I've got an old Scorpion DY-1000L generator here. It still runs well, though I've not used it in about 12 months. I don't leave fuel in the tank when storing it, to avoid gumming up the carb.
