Two Kids Swim Near a Great White Shark & People May Be Fishing For White Sharks in California

The footage contained in this video is the closest white shark encounter involving kids I've captured thus far. With signs placed on the beach, groups of people still venture out for a swim. Like most encounters, the sharks are not phased and they show no real interest in the humans. Additionally, recent actions by some humans could pose a threat to beach goers. I've documented humans behaving rather irresponsibly around white sharks. And I now have proof that people are actively trying to fish for white sharks. This footage shows a newly hooked white shark as well as an alleged shark tour company speeding near the shore almost hitting a couple white sharks.

Thank you for your videos, I have a bit of a phobia (if someone can have a bit...) but the soothing music and your calming voice, and watching the sharks just living their lives (not the over produced drama of a "shark week" doc) is really therapeutic. This is the first time I've ever felt bad for sharks. My feelings are now on par with how i feel about Lions and Tigers. Beautiful and majestic creatures, but you don't go wondering into their territory and harass them. I guess I'm developing a healthy respect vs. A blinded fear. So thank you for that!

I honestly am very happy for you in your changing mindset. It is, indeed, very unfortunate that Shark Week has devolved into a manic, hyperactive, overly-dramatic show just featuring frenzied animals and overpaid celebrities with hard-driving metal music to cap it off. It used to be so educational; now, it's on par with comic book movies. It's perfectly OK to have, as you say, a slight fear of sharks; we naturally fear what we don't understand or can't control. So, as long as you temper fear with curiosity, as you're doing, you can show these amazing creatures the respect they deserve. Props to you! 🙂

That's amazing footage! And the one kid was really flailing his arms and legs. The shark got SO close, yet the turned away. Nowadays, it's so popular to say "sharks are not dangerous". Like all predators, it's not mindless. It will not attack something just because. But it CAN attack and leave serious damage. Sure If you're a professional you can handle these creatures better than the average person, but the average person has no bussiness being this close to the sharks. They may panic and agitate the animal.

Realize that when the kid was looking right at the shark it did nothing then they got closer and the shark only move closer when one of the kids turn his back to the shark and started moving his legs and arm on top of the board now we watching from the drone we can see easily is a kid on a surfboard but ask your selves what did change in the view of the shark to make him move towards the kid what was the shark viewing at that moment is pretty easy to answer a SEAL that's why he moves to check it if that shark had attacked the kid everyone would blame the shark but is an animal been provoked and taunt but a kid looking like a seal

You are so right in pointing out "Nowadays, it's so popular to say "sharks are not dangerous"". I was at a major aquarium one time where they petting the small sharks was allowed. I went up to the animator and was in the process of asking her about the safety of touching the creatures and their nature, etc., and she was a starting to speak glowingly of the animal (as humans often do humanize animals in human terms), when suddenly a kid yelled out he had been bit. She turned look at him and immediately dismissed that that did not happen. The kid was not close to us and she hadn't even seen his injury. In any case, it was a bite and the kid was attended to later. I find adults are irresponsible in messaging even in pre-schools and KGs with in-house petting visits that wild predatory animals are harmless, that it's just us humans that the "bad guys",

Yes. I know the hook I mentioned and the photo I displayed are misidentified. It's just a simple editing mistake. I will own up to that. That doesn't take away from what you are seeing in the video. Also, please remember, this is a tagged shark with a known location in SHALLOW water. I can confidently say this is targeted shark fishing. What species of fish would a fisherman be trying to catch with a hook like that in the shallow sandy waters that this fish has been documented in (remember, it's tagged, so location data collected)? Also, I've had two locals witness a boat pull a white shark onto it's deck and take photos with a white shark. While that is a second hand account, I find it more likely these sharks are being targeted, given the less than ideal behavior I've shown in the video.

I mean it was like 25 feet away from us. I freaked out at the thought of that possibly being a deadly encounter. I did not see it and definitely didn't see it's fin breach the water while we were out. My daughter loves the shallow water but my son is like me and likes to swim further out. I am extra cautious these days after seeing that footage. It still gives me goosebumps and dread whenever we go to the beach.

Yes I agree. I have watched a video a few mos ago about a scientific group I believe or at least a very professional group of ppl that went out searching for these type problems so they could remove fish hooks , netting, & fishing line! There was a particular diver & I can’t remember his name at the moment, but he took a box crate of fish to the bottom at places that were 10 plus feet of water & he would remove hooks out of sharks ! He had a special given talent for helping & it really seem like the sharks appreciated his help as none ever tried to bite nor attack him! He was so courageous & wonderful for doing this for the sharks! The echo system requires all these animals to keep the ocean clean & not over populated. If not for sharks the oceans would be full of dead carcasses. Just like Vultures clean up the dead animals on highways & etc…. Greetings from North Carolina USA

Even though there was no one swimming at the time the 2 boarders were immediately called into shore told to pack up and trespassed from the property. not only are they banned for life on that specific beach property they also lost a small fortune on the cost of renting one of the cabins there over the summer.

Here's a theory: Having read about and watched tons of shark footage, could this not be an example of humans not being part of the shark ecology? I think the shark in the pink boogeyboard footage thought he was trailing a seal or a ray. When that fish realized this was not recognizable food and found itself in very shallow water its instincts kicked in and he let the kids be. This shark was not just a simple juvenile, it looked to be ten feet. Terrific footage, kudos to the Malibu Artist.

That covers at least 95% of GWS-human encounters.

Yes. I’ve seen much smaller sharks on other videos chance a woman out of the water!! The small shark had to flip himself back into the small wave to get back out to the ocean! He almost beached himself! His behavior made him look as if he was hungry & may not have eaten in awhile! Even tho the shark I saw in the other video was 3 ft long he was definitely chasing the human & all he was seeing was lunch!! I don’t think a hungry shark is going to be a picky eater!! Blood is blood & meat is meat! Yes I know they prefer blubber & fatty tissue.
@cloverazar5315
@cloverazar5315 3 года назад
@@royaldecreeforthechurchofm8409 that’s a very good point, but you also mentioned that it’s a case of mistaken identity, which is also true! A human in a black wetsuit or rash guard looks like a seal when seen from below silhouetted against the sun. It’s that fusiform shape, and sharks don’t have great eyesight to begin with. So they see “black colour + shape” and go “oh sweet, dinner”. But Jaws is expecting delicious blubber and gets rubber, and foam and balsa wood and screaming thrashing whoa-not-a-seal, and most tend to Nope out of the situation after that. Which doesn’t make the human feel any better about this unfortunate case of mistaken identity, of course, but it isn’t like the fish went out of its way to be mean. But I wonder because I don’t know and now I’m curious (because it’s Australia and you guys have bull sharks so for all I know they do eat people on purpose) - in the cases of sharks attacking surfers: is it a whoopsie bite and the person makes it to the beach and passes away there, or is the shark actually attacking with intent to hunt?

I’m thinking they didn’t see the shark. I remember when I was that age & a few yrs older I was always looking in the water whenever I would lay out in the sun & just want to cool off in the water. I never would see a shark. One summer my friend & I went to the beach & waves were kinda rough. We were in very shallow water but bc of the rough waves the sand was stirred up w no visibility. All of a sudden my friend is getting out of the water & told me a log rubbed against his leg & that he caught a glimpse of it being dark. I was just a cpl or 3ft from the shore as he was similar distance & there was no log as it would have washed up on the beach or bobbed in this shallow water! It was most definitely a shark & it had gotten caught up in the wave but went back out! Both of us sat down close to the waters edge in shock of what could have happened so quickly & unexpectedly! We didn’t want to believe what had just happened so obviously the first thing that came to mind was a log! My friend has very seldom gotten back in the water besides walking on the beach at the waters edge & neither have I. Yes, a very scary experience for both of us.

Having viewed many of the wonderful videos posted by The Malibu Artist on his amazing channel during the past couple of months, I would agree with you were your comments specifically related to Great White Sharks - which are clearly not the ravening man-eating monsters portrayed by the Jaws films; any more than Tigers are habitual predators of humans. As I'm sure you appreciate, however, there are cases - albeit undoubtedly rare in the scale of the numbers of occasions when, as in the case of this video, White Sharks find themselves in close proximity to humans - the sharks have actually eaten - not just taken a (potentially fatal) tentative bite out of - people. I can think of three cases of this occurring off the coast of Moreton Bay, South Australia, in 1986 / 7 (I was paying particular attention to Australia, back then, because I had just returned to to the UK after 2 1/2 years spent travelling 'Downunder'). There have also been several occasions on which White Sharks have taken bites out of Surf-skis and paddle boards of holidaymakers at beaches near Perth, WA (fortunately without damage being caused to the people involved); and also one case I can recall of a repeated - and fatal - attack on a man which occurred in very shallow water at a popular beach resort - possibly the same one which featured in the other incidents - which was witnessed by numerous holiday-makers, some of whom made heroic - if unsuccessful - attempts to save him. I think the moral to this particular story is that White Sharks need to be treated with the respect due to any wild animal which is - like a tiger, or a lion - a 'Top Predator', potentially well capable of including man in its 'prey list'. It does seem, however, that - like the two 'Big Cats' - Great Whites are not in the same league as estuarine crocodiles and polar bears which are known predators of Man. As for sharks which are known to pose a serious threat to humans, Tigers and Bull sharks are particularly dangerous, and the Oceanic White Tip shark is a particularly aggressive species which is known to have been responsible for mass attacks on humans who have been ship-wrecked (The W.W.2 U.S.N. Indianapolis incident, and the case of the wreck of H.M.S. Birkenhead off Natal in the nineteenth century). Best wishes!

I enjoy watching your drone videos about great white sharks. I’m not sure if someone suggested to add modified tiny megaphone speaker to your drone to be able to warn people and or tell them to leave sharks alone and be able to get close enough they’ll hear it👍❤️

People need to know about our oceans the whole planet actually. There are so many resources available to anyone to educate themselves. I pray that the thoughtless people that are endangering our sharks will be caught. Thanks again for your video footage and sharing with the public. It's a lot of work, I know. Many blessing to you. Thank you, Kim

It makes me so angry that anyone would fish for these sharks. Aren’t they still protected in American waters? 🤬🤬 I’d have a heart attack if those were my kids. I was shocked at how close they get to the shore when I first started watching them. It’s definitely proof that attacks are very, very rare. Love your videos. Doesn’t help my personal phobia tho! 😂

Look 'on the bright side' in respect of phobias; unlike spiders, at least you don't have to deal with a Great White in your bath!

I highly doubt that were fishing for whites they probably caught that one as bycatch from targeting Makos or Whalers that's why the hook was cut of and the shark is still in the ocean

@@petergleave7807 I have arachnophobia really, really badly. Just about lost my mind when one ran across my freaking headboard about 2 feet above my head a couple of weeks ago. Can’t even tap on thumbnails of them when RU-vid decides I wanna look at huge spiders on Australia for some reason. I’m not like that with sharks. They fascinate me, even though I’m afraid of them. 😂🤣

@@leroyking8746 That could definitely be true. Hate seeing any marine life with hooks stuck in their mouths, caught in lines etc.

A very different take, but I've been in the water on multiple occasions with dolphins in close proximity with swimmers/surfers trying to get closer to the animal by paddling towards them. My stance has always been to be thankful for the experience, instead of getting in their personal space. Being that this was a great white, which has an awful reputation given films such as Jaws and media outlets naming and shaming them for doing what a shark does in it's habitat, I am really disappointed in the paddleboarders for having chased it to the shallows - it's irresponsible and selfish. I hope they were told off for their reckless behaviour, and if not, that they see this video and realise how wrong they were in doing this. It's such a privilege to share this space with all animals of the ocean, let's not take advantage of it!

I agree I hate ppl harassing any animal. But I do not think there is a risk of the shark attacking in that case, they are not fighters they are opportunistic predators, They always swim away if you try to approach them concerned for their own safety If a shark charges against you and you punch him it will go away, if you try to do that to a lion or tiger they will be so much happy to destroy you

@@walterpayton2120I think you're right. Videos of people redirecting sharks prove your point. So you don't even have to punch, just push away the nose with your hand.

@@AlexADalton You should just let the shark eat you. Remember, you're the intruder in their backyard and not vice versa. Leave your privilege at the shoreline, please.
