Seven years ago, our local shelter had an "Adopt one get one free!" kitten offer. I told the woman I only wanted one. "Take 2, take 2!" she said, "No, just one." "But these are sisters! Don't break up a pair." "No, just ONE!" She wore me down and I agreed to take two. Then just as I'm signing the papers and ready to walk out with Two, a man walks in with a very tiny black kitten in a live-trap. The woman looks at me. "You said you really wanted a very tiny kitten...." "N... Oh, what the heck." I walked in wanting ONE, came home with THREE. Have never ever regretted it!😄

I adopted a solo kitten against this advice. 3 weeks later I adopted a second kitten because she was bunny kicking me all night! Now my kittos are 2 years old and love each other so much! I added a 3rd kitty in this year and they accepted and love him just the same! I foster as well and they are the dynamic duo of teaching kittens their manners.

Will my kitten come to me less if I adopt two?
@kirpelfrey

I have been giving this advice to people for years. I found a brother, kitten pair in the road and took them home. Not only did they help my adult female calm down--she just wanted to be a mommy--but they also never got in trouble for behavior. They were also strongly bonded; they ALWAYS slept, played, and ate together. Sadly, we lost one of the brothers to a soft tissue sarcoma last fall. I had to adopt a young friend to help pull both of my adults out of thier depression. Please, adopt in pairs. My cats are so much happier together. They take care of each other, and they are less lonely while I'm gone to work.

we went to adopt a kitten about a month ago. When we arrived they had her with another kitten and they claimed they were okay to separate. So we adopted the black kitten and we were heading to leave when they both started to cry the saddest meows I've ever heard. The second they were back together the crying stopped. So of course we have two new kitties to love! They are doing so well and adapted well to our older cats.
@ILuvAyeAye

Aww, I'm so glad you got two! It's difficult for shelters to know which animals are bonded. Sometimes there are obvious signs (though those signs can be missed because of how many different people work in shelters). But other times, cats are sneaky hah. Maybe your kitty didn't even realize how much she'd miss the black kitten until that moment. ❤ Also, while I truly believe kittens are better in pairs, and the shelter where I volunteered would not let someone bring home a single kitten unless they already had a young cat at home, bonded pairs can sometimes have more trouble finding a home, particularly for older animals. Where I live, most people rent, and even if you can find a pet friendly apartment, they'll often have strict rules about how many animals. I guess they'd rather you have one kitten ripping up their floors than two keeping each other happy. 🙄

My childhood cat was my best friend so when I left home for university I knew I would need a cat companion. I went to the shelter, which was full of stacks of cages with cats and kittens inside (decades ago, things are better now) and I was overwhelmed, not knowing how to choose from all those needy felines. Then as I passed one cage, a tiny tuxedo ran up and pressed himself against the bars, purring like a tractor. I put a couple fingers through the bars and petted him - purrs at 11 and some squeaks. He had chosen me. Then I saw an even tinier kitten in the litter box at the back of the cage looking scared/hostile. I saw on the label that they were brothers who’d been found together at the bottom of a garbage can rapidly filling with rain water. I decided I had to take the little one too, even though he wouldn’t leave the litter box and I’d only intended to adopt one. I put them both in my large bag and took them home on the bus, each little face poking out of a corner to see what was happening, and I was in love before I got home. The tuxedo, JJ, wanted to be with me almost constantly. If he wasn’t playing or napping with his brother he was on my lap and of course slept with me at night. His brother, solid black and named Petey, was terrified of humans and slept with me only because he needed to be with JJ. I didn’t try to pet him or pick him up when I realized he didn’t like it, but did talk to him a lot, sitting on the floor at a safe distance. I was sad that he was afraid of me but thankful that I’d adopted him since he needed JJ so much. A few months went by like this. Then I came home one day and there at the door was JJ as usual - and Petey! I looked down and Petey stood up and raised his paws to me and meowed. I was stunned and said, “What?” and he did it again, his tiny body reaching up for me. I picked him up and cradled him to my chest, his head resting on my shoulder and he purred and nuzzled into my neck and it’s one of the best moments of my entire life. And we lived happily ever after, until they both crossed the rainbow bridge. Looking back and realizing what the likely outcome for a solo unfriendly black kitten would have been, I’m horrified at the idea that I might have left him behind. All my cats since have come with at least one sibling or friend.

I adopted Oliver and Murphy as a sibling pair. I’d visited the litter a couple of times before adopting them and they were ALWAYS playing together, so I didn’t want to separate them. I went back to the shelter to see if she’s still available but of course she was gone by then. But I did find another kitten that was left cuz his siblings were adopted already so I decided to get him and they’ve been buddies since then :) Now they’re 3 years old and they still chase each other around, watch the birds together, play hide and seek etc. I’m so glad I went back to the shelter and adopted my second boy when my first one was still small. Highly recommend adopting a duo!

10 years ago my son went to a local shelter to get one kitten. He found the kitten he wanted, who was in a cage with an unrelated, laid back black kitten. He couldn't leave him behind, the shelter offered BOGO, so he brought home Bob and Larry. They were sort of buddies, not really bonded, but we're so glad we got them both! They turned out to be 2 special cats-of-a-lifetime (and we've had over 100 cats over the years). Never regretted getting 2! We already had 5 adults (all indoors) and a dog! Thank you for reminding us that 2 are better than one.

When it was time for #2 to get neutered he spent the night at the clinic. #1 searched the house crying all day &night looking for her friend and was inconsolaable until he came home.

I adopted a pair of siblings 2 years ago. At first I only wanted one. My friend fosters kittens for a local shelter and was posting the pictures online. I was trying to decide between 2 of the kittens. I really liked a little black female and my kids liked a chunky tuxedo boy named Sumo. After watching videos on kittens I started thinking maybe getting 2 wouldn't be so bad. When my friend posted that she was really hoping the 2 kitties I was trying to decide between could be adopted together, I knew it was meant to be. It was a great decision. I honestly think 2 cats are less work than just 1.

In 2014, I adopted a single kitten. After a couple of years of just him and I, I noticed he was lonely so I got him a little brother, and they bonded really well. Unfortunately, big brother passed away too early, when the little one was only 1 y.o. He was soooo sad, I could actually see him grieving. My heart was double-broken. 💔💔 So only 1 week later, even if I was not 100% ready, I got him a little sister! It was love at first sight!!! 😍 Then, I quickly noticed that he was teaching her the ropes just like his big brother had done with him. He had his work cut out for him : she's a typical timid almost fearful Calico! It was incredible to see that I had cats teaching other cats from one "generation" to the next... Today, the "little one" is now a HUGE orange cat, very sweet and lovable, and his little sister, well... is still a close-to-feral-Calico 😅, but she looooves her big brother and is a happy healthy cat! 🥰

So we foster failed our 1y/o (she was 9mos at the time), and she came in alone, but was pretty lonely. When we later began fostering 5mo kittens she got really excited. As soon as she heard the word "kittens", she ran around looking for her "new friends." She eventually fell in love with one of the kittens we fostered and they are now "soul mates for life". They are never apart and often ends up ignoring us to play with each other during play time. They sleep together, groom each other, and could not be happier. Our 1y/o even insisted on keeping the bell on her collar b/c the kitten likes to chase it. Definitely would adopt a pair again!

I recently started fostering with my local shelter, and one time they had me foster a solo slightly spicy kitten to socialize. The thing I noticed most compared to fostering a litter of kittens was that this solo baby had endless energy. Like no matter how hard I tried, I could never tire her out on my own. I felt so bad for her, I wished she had a friend during that time to play with, since I couldn't play with her 24/7. Now I totally understand the 2 kittens philosophy haha. I don't plan to adopt again just yet, but if I do decide I want a kitten again I am for sure getting 2. For now I want to keep fostering. Thank you Kitten Lady for being an inspiration and resource for me (and literally everyone lol) on my fostering journey.

My first ever cats were Peaches and Granola who were sisters we got as kittens, but one day my dad took Granola away from us because she kept leaving accidents everywhere, my older sister and I cried our eyes out that day. Since then, Peaches had been a bit more grumpy, especially when we got our other cat, Holly about 8 years later, but she eventually became more friendly. I miss them both very much. A couple years after my parents divorced, my dad got a couple of kittens for his place, a black cat named Charlie and a cow patterned cat we called Sally. Although the 2 fought, they were best friends and were just adorable together. They made being at my dad's place much less miserable, especially when I had to live with him and my stepmom for a couple of years after I couldn't get a decent job. Sally unfortunately passed away when the pandemic started due to cancer and Charlie and I gave her extra love during her final days. I live at my own apartment now and even brought Charlie with me, we've both been happier ever since. I've talked about getting a kitten, but my mom has told me that I'd have to buy double the food and cat litter. I talked to my older sister about it and she told me that she had been thinking about getting 2 kittens when she and her boyfriend move in together. Even though I don't like to think about it, when Charlie is no longer with me, I might get 2 kittens of my own. Sorry if this was too long or depressing, I thought it would be worth sharing.

At first I was a little worried about the age gap, preparing to adopt one of Suus' siblings if needed, but Henk and Suus playfought a lot (both of them tempting the other into one) and having the zoomies together. Now that Suus is two and a bit calmer, they both love curling up on the couch and switching between each others' kibble bowls (with the exact same food in it, but ya know, greener grass etc etc) I'm super happy with my two fluffy beans!

I have a pair of siblings and it's been great to have them to entertain each other. Recently took in a feral baby. He gets a long great with my other two, but I quickly realized he needed a kitten his own age to play with, as my older cats only want to play for a few minutes max before they decide they're done and get annoyed when he keeps tackling them. So I adopted another kitten about a month younger than him and they have been inseparable! Their energy levels are more alike and my older cats aren't bothered as much. So even if you already have a cat/cats in the home, in my experience, it's still better to get a pair!

When we got our first cat duo, one ran away. (we were longtime owners but only at my Grandma's place where I used to be daily) Then after some time we introduced another one. But by that time firstie was too used to being alone. He started biting the little one so hard we had to rehome her (to my Grandma!). A couple of years later my mom brought home another kitten she raised because it was from a litter my Grandma had unexpectedly. Firstie and Kitten kind of got along with each other but never became friends, also because Kitten was so bonded to my mother, he got jealous whenever she cuddled with Firstie. By that time, Firstie and I had a very deep bond. We had to put him down in 2019 and Kitten just last week. Seeing them like that over the years, I realized how complex cats can be and decided, that if I were to get another one, it should be a pair. I'd also love to adopt from our local shelter and see if I can get a sibling pair!

The first time I was in high school and the whole household was busy, so having two kittens that could play and distract each other while everyone wasn't home was great. And the second time, the shelter wouldn't let the kitten that chose us go home without a buddy, because of behavour issues. We were planning on adopting two anyway as that worked well for us last time, and would prefer the kittens take out their energy on each other and not the senior cat in the house.

I went to adopt a kitten and ended up taking Momma home with us too. It was THE BEST decision I had ever made. They are so bonded. The kitten, Jack, ended up being diagnosed with congenital hydrocephalus and having his Momma, Birdie, with him to help comfort him on the bad days has been really special to witness! So our special Jack Jack boy has 2 mommas looking out for him and lives his best life!🥰🥹

After having two solo kittens, and after watching one of your previous videos where you said "having one kitten is like having half a kitten", I decided to honour the memory of our second kitten and take all the lessons I learned from her short life and get two kittens. Best thing ever I did. They are a little brother and sister and they are so much easier to look after as they keep themselves occupied a lot. I do miss the little chats I used to have with Trixie (RIP) though. Otis and Willow don't chat very much to me except to ask for food/outdoor time or full body massages (I don't spoil my kittens. You do!) I hope not to be adopting any kittens for a long, long time to come but from here on in it will definitely be two kittens together. They're so much happier with a little buddy. Without your wonderful advice Hannah, I wouldn't have two kittens now. In fact I'd have given up after our second loss and said "we're just not meant to have cats" and gone back to having either a dog or no pet at all. Think of all the fun I would have missed? The kittens have me in stitches laughing every single day. I love them.

Kittens are often not caring companions any more than toddlers are. They want cuddles and food and games but they’re too young to give anything back. Kittens charming, adorable and funny but adult cats, especially those you’ve raised, are real friends.

I fostered kittens for YEARS without adopting any. But then my mom ended up with a lovely adult stray, who then ended up with me. I decided she could just stay ❤️ She loved all my foster kittens so much! So we’ve had her about a year and very recently officially adopted her a new kitten friend (who had actually already been with us in foster for months - since he was a week old). It was the best decision. 🥰

I saw two littermates posted early one morning and I absolutely had to get them. Not only did they adjust to my home super quickly but they are the sweetest most loving girls I could ever ask for. And even when I am at work, or having a day where I am tired and not feeling up to doing much they always have one another to chase around the house. I am so happy to of gotten the two of them. The shelter I got them from even required they go to a home together since they were inseparable!

I adopted my two from my first every foster litter, Heather and Aster. I wanted a kitten i could raise to be an emotional support animal for me and the two of them fill different parts of that role with aster being a real mammas boy and Heather being a bit more of a loner but smart, when I'm upset she's the one who comes to me and lets me cuddle her and she'll lick me to help me feel better. Now I have my first 2 orphans the twins have stepped up and are teaching them how to be little cats in place of their mamma.

But when we saw a bonded pair of 2yo females, we immediately shifted gears. Then we saw the 7yo female in the kennel above them and came home with all 3. It’s been 12 weeks and everyone is getting along so very well. Such a good decision to bring home more than just one.

I lost my best friend, my buddy, Boyboy,an orange and white boy, only a few days ago (4 by the time I am commenting this). He lived to be 19 years old before cancer crept in and his health rapidly deteriorated- we had to have him put to sleep. I feel like part of my heart and soul went with him when he went. I’m 20 years old and he was 19- we rescued Boyboy and his sister, Girly (who went a few years earlier because of health problems). They lived long, happy, and enriched lived because of one another. They were so happy for their entire lives, and I miss them both so much. I’m mostly venting to other cat lovers, because my best friend went ‘over the rainbow bridge’ only a short time ago… but also because a pair really is better than one. You’ll watch your kitties grow up together, play together, love one another and you. They’ll sometimes share silly quirks, like where/how they like to eat, or play, and get up to adorable antics their entire lives. Some of my favorite pictures of both of my cats are images of them cuddled up together in the sun, taking little cat naps (even cuter when they were cuddling our late dog Bruno). They’ll be enriched with their companionship their entire lives if you’re lucky! Never underestimate the love that a kitten duo can give you. With good treatment and a little bit of luck, you can have two best friends for life.

I adopted a pair of litter mates in 2020 (Jack & Sally). While they are siblings, they couldn't be more opposite in personalities, interests, and fears. But even with all those differences, they are still best friends that play together, keeping each other more active than a solo cat. There are also many examples of how their differences have helped. When one was fearful of a new feeding bowl, the other was not and through watching their sibling, was able to overcome their fear. They comfort each other. I have no regrets bringing 2 kittens home and definitely recommend get 2 cats. 😊

Hannah is amazing in all that she does! Those kitten babies she is holding are so adorable! 🥰 I have nothing whatsoever against humane society’s or shelters at all, they save lives! I will mention that my city’s humane society used to get in “paired cats” adult cats who were raised together, ie: brother/sister or sister/sister mom/daughter or mom/son. What their website would show, is you knew they were together from their “information card” but the 2 cats would be in separate crates to adopt them separately. I understand the reasoning as to give both a chance at adoption, but I personally don’t agree with breaking up a “bonded pair” 😞 I’m not sure if they still do this or not there, as I haven’t checked lately. I have an almost 10 years young furry kitty, her name is Punkin’ She is an indoor kitty!Punkin’ never took to other cats, even when she was a couple of years old. If I would have known that, I would have “paired” her sooner, as I can’t now. When she sees another cat, she “pants” which I’ve never seen a cat do, until I got her!

I have never known anyone or a shelter that recommended adopting two of anything. Whether kittens or puppies. Maybe they just don't trust me! I agree that two is better than one for all the reasons you mentioned. It seems that any time I adopted, it was always solo but I usually had other pets at home to ease that transition. Maybe that's why. The state only allows me to have two dogs. So if I have a dog at home and adopt two puppies, now I have three dogs. ?

We adopted a bonded pair of sibling kittens that we named Otis and Baby after the Firefly brother/sister of Devil’s Rejects fame. They love each other immensely and constantly cuddle and chatter at each other in little coos and chirps. Baby and Otis were rescued together from under a dumpster in the depths of winter. Both were sickly and Baby especially so, but a kind foster family took them and bottle fed them and cared for them just like you do for so many babies! Thanks to their care, both cats are healthy and happy, and are a very loved part of our family 💜

My cats are littermates and I adopted them when they were 8 months old. They're both shy and lived outside with their mom until they were almost 4 months old so the shelter really thought they'd have a hard time adjusting to my home. They did hide for the first two days (they came out to play and eat at night), but then on the third day they came up to me and let me pet them. The lady from the shelter was very surprised but I'm pretty positive they adjusted so quickly since they had each other. Plus, watching two kittens play is so much fun! I feel sad for kittens who are adopted out without a friend.

If someone *really* can't get more than one, they should do what she suggested in the video and ask the shelter about cats that want to be on their own. Our two cats just turned a year old. We have had them since they were 3 weeks old. Something happened to their mother and she didn’t return back home one day. They were born at my friends house. We were going to take just one, but ended up taking two because we couldn’t decide between the two of them. We bottle fed them, helped them go to the bathroom and all the other things that go along with raising 3 week old kittens. They are such a sweet little pair of brothers and it’s totally true how 2 kittens are better than one. The play aggression is definitely a HUGE truth. This is the first time I’ve ever had 2 cats together and boy can I tell a difference in that. They get all their rough play out with each other and come to us for all the snuggles! She acted forlorn, wasn’t playful, and was definitely afraid. I ran back to the shelter and brought home one of her siblings and INSTANT TRANSFORMATION. They both had so much fun together and they still do. It was immediately obvious that 2 cats is much healthier for the cats than one. They have remained bonded and are doing great. They also dont scratch or bite when they play with us. They grew up very gentle, loving, well adjusted cats.
