Two-Man Chainsaw - Final [Restoration]

The time has come for this chainsaw restoration. I have been wanting to get to this tool for a long time. I started the disassembly in November 2018 and had to wait a while for some rare parts to arrive. This chainsaw is a McCulloch 99 two-man chainsaw made in 1954. The engine is 161cc and the powerhead alone is 51lbs making it one of the largest production chainsaws ever and the largest in McCulloch's production line at the time.
In this video, I finally piece the whole saw back together and try to get it running. It took me over 13hrs to reassemble just the powerhead and I am so glad to have it done. The parts, like the piston rings took months to arrive, but they fit great after I gapped them like a boss.
Cutting wood with this saw is very different than with a normal chainsaw and requires a second person to risk their life during the entire cut.
This project was entirely funded by Patrons and I have to thank them immensely for their support!
You can contact Jeff at Forma Graphics if you would like new decals made: formagraphicart@gmail.com
I'd like to thank Evapo-Rust for sponsoring this video.

Your rebuild has been very special for me as I was blessed to visit the Mc Culloch plant in the early 1960's. My dad worked down the street at Douglas Aircraft where he helped Mc Culloch develop some of their die casting technology that you show in your vid. I am now in my mid 70's but the views I see are of the saw (36in bar ) my dad was given during that visit. Thank you for taking me back to my earlier times.

Sure brought back some memories of working with my dad back in the mid 60’s when I was about 11 or 12. He ran the saw and I guided the handle at the end of the bar. Who ever thought it was dangerous? No one, it was just what country boys did. Now all you need to complete the restoration is to find the post hole digger attachment. More than once it sent me flying after hitting a rock or root. Great job on the saw!

@@HandToolRescue At 71 I've come across these tabs many times before. They are an alternative to castellated nuts with cotter pins. Since you can't have cotter pins in a bolt head (totally useless) they used these tabs to keep the bolt from turning. So the tabs are positioned against the bolt head. Obviously, whoever worked on it before had no idea.
@ColtaineCrows

Sometimes there are two locking tabs on those washers, they're still very much in use today btw, one to bend against an edge on the unit and another to bend against the bolt head. But definitely one of the tabs should be bent against the bolt head itself.

The red gasket spray is great for water pumps, intake manifold gaskets, and the such. For head/exhaust gaskets, the copper spray a gasket it the best. Fills surface imperfections and whatnot. Just my $0.02 as a mechanic and avid chainsaw collector in southern Illinois. Great job on that guy. Old McCulloch saws have always been kinda weird. The carbs are weird, and some of them have a wick rather than fuel lines, and you use the throttle rod to set the carb...

Restoration improperly done. You did not shock yourself at all. Epic fail, unsubscribing.

This is awesome! I love these old school chainsaws! Thanks for posting! Maybe someday I'll be able to find a something that is vintage and restore it.

Can you imagine how bad logging must have sucked to welcome this tool? I'm sure it beats a crosscut saw but I bet it beat the operator pretty good too. Great video, cool old saw!
