Continuing the "Two Minute Tying" series, for this pattern, I chose the highly effective Pheasant Tail. During this fast tutorial, I demonstrate the basics behind this venerable pattern, plus add a tungsten bead and antron wing case. Feel free to vary this pattern with hot spots (fluorescent-colored beads and/or antron), legs, and even peacock-dubbing.
This pattern is one of those I feature in the "Two Minute Tying" series. These flies are more of "guide flies," meaning they can be tied in a short amount of time, and more importantly, catch fish.
If you have any thoughts or questions based on this video, please leave them down below in the "Comments" section or you can email me: tcammisa@gmail.com

Yes Tim I do use mostly Hanák hooks now, those and a few select other makers. All are Competition Barbless. Since Scott Enloe turned me onto Hanák I try to stick to those, I just really like their styles.
@TimCammisa

Very cool, Tony. Who do you tend to purchase those hooks off of?
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 11 лет назад
Thanks for the suggestions... I leave the PT higher up the hook to represent the Baetis and a few other mayfly patterns that are known for lengthy tails and shorter bodies, but your suggestion is correct for larger PT nymphs. I don't know the Shop Vac, but will check it out. Does it represent caddis or mayflies? You said no tail, so I'm guessing caddis emerger (with that white antron sticking out)? Great comments; thanks for checking out this video...

Thanks, Borislav Stankov ...and maybe I should change the title of the series! My own friends love to make fun of the length of these videos, though they do acknowledge that the flies are simple to tie. Thanks again for taking time to comment. TC

It's really a caddis and a mayfly imitation. Somewhat similar to a serendipity. It also makes for a great dropper off a dry or in a Euro nymph rig, however I most commonly fish it under a small indicator with a heavier fly such as a copper john as the point fly. If your looking for a amazing baetis nymph, check out Idyl's baetis nymph by idylwilde flies. Best fly I have EVER fished, probably caught 500 fish on it. Thanks for responding! P.S.You can use zlon instead of antron, it works better.

Great work but listen as a fly fishermen have you heard of the Mrs Simpson fly? Can you make one like you just did here with this one. My uncles a professional fly fishermen he took us on a trip up in Dullstrom south Africa one year the whole time we were there I used the Mrs Simpson fly I caught 10 trout that trip mind u it was my first time fly fishing my uncle the pro with all his gear top of the line shamano rods caught 1 and it got away he was livid its was fantastic.

Good pattern. Tied Euro Style, just the way I like em. Tim, have you tried Hanák Competition Fly Hooks for your nymphs? They are great hooks, my favorite is the Original Czech Nymph.
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 7 лет назад
I agree, Tony, and I REALLY like the Hanak hooks. Do you tie with them for the majority of your patterns?

I'll look into this fly; are you able to email me a link to a picture of it? I have never tied it before, thus I will see what I can find out. Thanks for the comments!

I order my Hanák Competition Fly Hooks and my Tungsten beads from Kevin Compton at Performance Flies. Kevin is always spot on with my order and my order is usually to me within 3 days, sometimes 2. Kevin comes highly recommended from me for sure. If you want quality product in a timely manner, go with Performance Flies.

Hey Tim. On this fly do you use an Antron dubbing or Antron Yarn for your wing casing. Thanks much.
@TimCammisa
@TimCammisa 8 лет назад
+Terry Corder Terry, I use antron yarn for the wing case, but if you have antron dubbing that is in longer pieces, I wouldn't hesitate in trying it. Thanks for checking, and I hope all is well. Tim

Tim, I have watched your videos for several years now and really enjoy then. I have learned a lot from you. I am the Assistant Program Lead for Operations for Project Healing Waters in Omaha. We are trying to do Zoom fly tying sessions, but so far I have not found an inexpensive camera that will get me close enough to the fly to show details. Can you tell me what camera you use. Thanks.

You should wrap down further on the hook. Theres to much of the shank showing. Also, you should try the shop vac, it has been 10X more effective than a regular PT. It's just like a regular PT without the tai and peacock. Just wrap the pheasant up the body, rib the body with wire and take some white/clear antron and tie it in right behind the bead and cut it so it covers 1/4 to half of the hook shank. Overall, good video

Redneck Hippie For starters, that's awesome with your Spongebob fly! I honestly don't fish in VA too much; the only places I ever fly fished there were private waters that were open to us for an event. I really enjoyed it, and we caught some nice stocked trout. I typically fish western PA, but may have ran into you somewhere??

Ha ha...very observant! These videos are intended to feature flies that can be tied in a short period of time, most under two minutes. This is one that definitely qualifies, and a great one to have in the fly box. Thanks for taking a moment to comment. TC

I apologize for the PT pattern not meeting your expectations, Stephen. There was definitely rushing for this fly, though I will stand by the fact that those patterns featured in my "Two Minute Tying" series are intended to share characteristics of guide flies: Few materials, simple to tie, little time required, and effective in catching trout. This fly meets those requirements, thus I stand behind it. Thank you for the comment, and I hope you enjoy some of my other tutorials. Tim
