I’m one of the owners of Tenkara Guides LLC, the developers of the Utah Killer Bug. It is a modern variant of Frank Sawer’s Killer Bug. It is part of a family of wool yarn bodied flies we developed back in 2011. Another version of this fly is the Utah Killer Kebari. Add a partridge soft hackle behind the head. Works really well in slower currents. Use 2 wraps of a partridge hackle that has fibers about the length of the shank to the tip of the point. We tie these from size 12-18. For 16/18 sizes, separate the yarn into 2 strands for a thinner body. Use one strand for the body. Another yarn color that works very well is Jamesons Moorit. Great for water with small leeches.

One of my favorites! My favorite variation is to use a red wire underbody for weight and color, and a pink hotspot head. When the yarn gets wet, the wire underbody really shines, and has a beautiful translucent look that the trout can't seem to resist. It has saved me from getting skunked on high pressure streams.

I use wool and yarn a lot. For nymphs and dry flies. But you have to pay attention. Some sink and some float. So be carefull to take the right one. But I think that's obvious. Tight lines 🎣 from the Čech Republic 🇨🇿.

This style of fly really is a killer, and so easy to tie. It works with non-jig hooks also. I think it is sort of a generic larvae imitation, or some would call it a grub. Tie it skinny to imitate a Callibaetis nymph in lakes or fatter for Caddis in rivers. Larger for Cranefly larvae. I have good luck with tan but will try Oyster. Thanks for keeping it simple and not getting carried with nuance. If I wanted nuance and detail I would tie Atlantic Salmon flies and make them into earrings. Haha.

@@TimCammisa Thanks Tim. I think the concept of 2-minute flies is very practical. A lot of flies I see on RU-vid seem to be overkill on detail and nuance. I converged my best lake fly to something similar to the Utah Bug and to a Caddis larvae pattern for rivers. A lot of insect larvae are basically grubs or maggots. Easy to tie flies means more time on the water and less concern about losing a fly while fishing.

Hi Tim, I remember the last video, crashed RU-vid didn't it? Lol! Lots of discussion on the secret yarn ect. I got a lot of suggested viewing from RU-vid on the "pattern" at that time. I haven't tied it yet, but I did look for a comparable yarn using the criteria suggested for it's composition. Found some too, also other yarns that I liked for their uniqueness to use on other patterns. I even checked out the color match at the grocery store sea food case on the way home. I don know how they determine the color name at the mill where Sawyer got his yarn but I now know the color of oysters, at least from the area where the store gets theirs, and my yarn was a good match. I suspect there's more to the patterns success, how and where you fish it included. At any rate it's great fun and like many things it gets put on a back burner where "things to try" remain at a slow simmer. However I did eye the deep water mahogany clams for future color match on iso patterns ;-) Take care Tim, always a pleasure to watch your tutorials. 👍😎

HAHA, Joe...crashed RU-vid! You're way too funny, but it definitely created a buzz. Regarding your comment as to the color, I know what you mean. There are definitely effective methods that not everyone applies. In other circles, that yarn Mr. Sawyer used is like solid gold! I get it as a tier, but fortunately it hasn't driven me to the obsession point...at least not yet! You'll have to shoot me an email with a pic of that mahogany yarn, sounds great! This is the closest colour to the Chadwick 447 that Frank Sayer used for his killer bug that I have seen. I purchased mine from Jamieson in Shetland, UK. I now see a distributor in the US.

I would recommend calling a local fly shop over these recommendations, but I would certainly have some BWO imitations, October caddis nymphs, olive streamers, some midge patterns (subsurface and emerging), plus a few Euro nymphs. My guide company Tenkara Guides LLC, based in SLC, are the developers of the Utah Killer Bug. It was designed and tested on the Provo River. Our original uses medium red Ultrawire on hooks sized 21/14. Small Ultrawire on size 16 hooks. Red or orange Glo Brite thread used for a head. Red thread for the rest of the tie.
