Pectoralis Minor
Triangular shaped. Deep to pectoralis major.
Origin: Third, fourth and fifth ribs close to respective costal cartilages.
Insertion: Medial border and upper surface of coracoid process.
Concentric Actions:
Scapular protraction and shoulder depression. (Tilts scapula anterior. Rotates scapula about a coronal axis so coracoid process moves anterior and caudal, while inferior angle moves posterior and medial.)
Accessory breathing muscle: Elevation of ribs.
Innervation: Medial Pectoral Nerve (C8, T1).
Hypertonicity of the pectoralis minor contributes to a postural fault known as upper cross syndrome AKA upper crossed syndrome.
Hypertonicity of the pectoralis minor muscle may place pressure on a network of nerves known as the brachial plexus. This leads to thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS).
