I upgraded to FX30 from a 10 year old Canon Eos M3 ( yeah I know ) and I’ll say that my whole film making world has opened up. I loved your review of it. I have to say other youtubers pick these products apart so much, it can make you question your choices. But the truth is all of these cameras are vastly superior to what we used to have, so you can’t go wrong. Trust your instincts and enjoy what you buy. Because the camera you can afford is infinitely better than the camera someone else can’t afford.

Thank u so much.. Why do u use ISO 800? Will it not make more noice and less details?
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
No actually, ISO 800 is the first of two base ISO in the FX 30, making it the cleanest image with the largest dynamic range. 2500 is the second base ISO. Both of those ISO are rated to be the cleanest with highest dynamic range. I'm still yet to find out whether or not this holds true in RAW image files with still sitting. But that is the science behind this camera and it's video specs with s-log 3.

Hi bro, good to know it runs smooth on an m1 mac. I just got the camera but no lens yet. What sd cards do you recommend (on a budget)?
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
I found the Kingston brand was the cheapest legit sd. Just make sure if you buy any of those from Amazon that it's not from a third party seller, or that it's a reputable brand! My buddy just bought one and it was fake. Not actually 300mbps
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
Also make sure it's 300mbps or above or you can't record 4k 24 or 60... And you need even faster card to record 4k 120. But 300mbps can do everything else. It's sad because CF Express cards are so expensive.

Hey bro I just stumbled on your channel because I just got the FX30 and i love the comparisons you're doing. But I noticed in this video at 4:18 you have some weird pixel noise popping out in your sons blue hoodie and I am wondering if that's a color grading thing or if the FX30 has some issues with certain colors or shadows/highlights. Because I also noticed your other video comparing noise between the a6500 and FX30 had some similar weird pixel problem in the overexposed highlights of your lights. I'm hoping this is not an FX30 sensor issue and just the color grading or an exporting fault...
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
Hmmm I've been playing that clip over and over on my big screen and I'm not sure what pixel noise your talking about. I wonder if it's your player lol. But regardless whatever you're seeing I'm sure it's my editing and not the camera. I know you can get pixeling in you blacks if you push them below zero on you scopes. Regardless I still don't understand people defending the a6500 like it compares to the fx30. Not sure why they don't see the difference. When I edit the footage up close I can tell exactly which camera I'm looking at. FX30s 10bit color is 👌
@CineFlavor
@CineFlavor Год назад
@@TonyVsEarth I've played it on 2 separate 4k monitors as well as a PC and MAC so it's definitely there. But I realized it's only when you stream it in 4k. If I put it on 1080p its not there. So Idk if it's a youtube error or what but it's not like traditional noise. It's bright white pixels popping in and out. Very noticeable so you shouldn't miss it. It's in the shadows on his hoodie and the fence. Hopefully it's not the camera and just a RU-vid compression thing
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
@@CineFlavor I've been having the same issue looking at action cameras. I noticed a ton of people posting test footage that looks absolutely terrible but other people say that it looks fine to them. So I'm starting to think that RU-vid isn't always the best 4 side-by-side comparison (probably compression vs. Playback options). Then again we don't really have a lot of option to examine without buying. Thanks for bringing it up though. I will be keeping an eye out for that, but like I said I feel it would have been me and not the camera LOL. Cheers

hey there! I have a Sony a6400 and I'm considering the FX30 (my lenses are the Sigma 16mm 1.4 and the Sony 18-105mm f4 but I could get a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8)- I do mostly weddings and some special events. Did u find the performance of the XF30 in lower light much better than the A6500? Just wondering...the video centric design of the FX30 is very appealing, but here in Canada as you know the camera will cost $2,800 without the XLR handle. I wish I could afford the FX3 but too rich for me.
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
I would use the fx30 on a wedding in a heart beat. This is what I'll say.... It's slightly better at low light. I would never of shot ISO 2500 on the a6500, but the quality and color is on another level. This being said I'll still like to shoot at iso 800 indoor at those weddings as much as possible. Keep your f4 for outside. Go 2.8 and lower. I've done a bunch of City light shooting with the 16-55 f. 2.8 at 800 and it's great but would love a 1.8. I still wish I had full frame but this is a big improvement over the a6000 censor. I personal plan on using there fx30 on two wedding this year. But as my video camera! If your primarily shooting picture I would say wait! The fx30 does not shoot burst mode and has no mechanical shutter so it won't be the best with fast motion stills. The reason I say "wait" is that in willing to bet any money they are going to make a picture APSC like the a6000's with this new censor and I bet it will also have similar video specs. To be honest I'm hoping that it's not the same as the other a6500. I love that they put this in the fx3 body and I hope they do the same with the picture camera. I would love the larger body of the a7 even if it's not full frame. Those are just my thoughts, but I'm willing to put money that they're going to come out with a picture camera the same specs so much so that I'm already saving my money for it!

@@TonyVsEarth hey...Sony really is putting out amazing cameras...I have always been a Canon guy...from camcorders like the XF300 (good for live concerts etc but only HD), to a C100mk2 with a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 to a Canon 90D (ok for low budget weddings and it has 1080p 60fps) but my a6400 is ok- better pic in 4k than the 90D-but all my deliverables are on HD-most at least. I'd love something like the C100 mk2 for sure. If that did 4K I wouldnt consider anything else for now. I do video. Don't care about photos at all. I'm sure there are more cameras coming out this year. A camera like the FX6 with a APSC sensor but half the price would be a dream! Maybe dreaming too much! I would use the FX30 with a Ronin S gimbal.I also like the a7Siii a lot but it's twice the price and I would need maybe new lenses for sure. Question. The FX30 can use SD Cards-can I use Sandisk 200MBs or 300 MBs? I have several of those. The express cards are too much! I know the fastest cards are needed for the highest recording modes but the most I would do is 4k 60..also, with my a6400 if I use an external monitor and record in 4k, the camera's LCD goes to black but displays info on the screen. I wish BOTH screens showed video at the same time while recording. and finally...can I assign a button to do WB? I wish it had a dedicated button for WB that would just let me press it while aiming at a white card and get a reading...thanks for much for the video man. Are you in Canada? take care
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
@@TheFandangovideoguy so yes you are correct, you cannot do the 1080p 240 frames per second with the 300 MB per second card which you do need for 4K recording. But you can get 24 and 60 frames per second 4K with 300 mb per second.

can we use fx30 in weddings? with 18-105 power zoom lens? in low light condition ?
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
To be honest I plan on using the fx30 in weddings this year. This being said as good as the image is on this it is only slightly better at ISO handling. I would have never used 2500 ISO on my a6500 but I also try to use ISO 800 as often as possible. I would not use your 18 to 105 on a wedding unless it's outdoors. If you're planning on shooting indoors you definitely need the f 2.8. at night there are sometimes I wish I had an f 1.8. I think it goes without saying though, that no matter what camera you have lower the f-stop the better at night.

Could I use my a6500 with the fx30 for weddings ?, to use the a6500 as a B cam and the a6000 for small snippets and make it look like I only used 1 camera ? Most will be shot on the fx30 the other Sony's just for quick different angles. Thanks for your input.
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
I would say yes, but there is a little more color from the 10bit in the fx30 and there is more resolution. It's not perfectly color matched and will need a little finesse but you can make it work. I would makes a look for the fx30 then paste those settings to the a6500 and make the Tweeks necessary to match the two together. Save in settings or as luts and just have a lut for each to match the scene.

I also have an a6500 and thinking to upgrade, how's the noise performance at high iso (4000-6400) compared to the a6500. For my works im always in low light conditions. Honestly its frustrating that sony is still not including some basic "cinema" feature like false colors and shutter angles in its "cinema" lines camera, not to mention the lack of 25p/30p in h265. By the way here in Italy the camera costs 2300€, about 2500 USD atm (without handle).
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
Good question.... Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you as I haven't had to use more than the second base ISO which is ISO 2500. If you seen the night shots where I was filming in the dark with nothing but car lights, I do feel like that exposure was pretty spot on at only f 2.8 at 2500 ISO. I think the big difference between this camera and the a6500 would be that you need more ISO to get the same exposure because you have less dynamic range. Also I am shooting with a maximum of f 2.8 whereas I do plan on getting a faster lens toward the f 1.4 range which is going to significantly increase light intake. This being said your question is still a reasonable one and makes me feel like I should probably do some test comparisons for you guys watching on RU-vid. I would think that the noise on this camera would be better than the a6500 with the new and improved sensor. But who knows! It's also going to be difficult to compare as the a6500 does not have s-log. To try and best answer your question unfortunately the second base ISO of 2500 is more noisy than the first base ISO of 800 and I would only shoot it if the exposure is spot on to what is natural or better so that I could reduce in post for a cleaner image. If your image is still underexposed at ISO 2500 I would not raise the exposure in post unless you have some kind of software for denoising. I would consider that this would only be an issue if you were trying to expose brighter than what is natural. Is camera seems to be designed so that f 2.8 or better you can get a great natural low light image. I will try to make a lot more night test footage in the future. Thanks for watching and your comments

I just got my 30 a few days ago I also have a a6500 . if you need the 60fps 4k defiantly grab it also if you have the ninja v u can shoot 16gb raw. To me personally depending on what your doing it's not to much of an upgrade plus the 30 is more grainy so if you don't depend on video id stay with a6500 I only got the 30 cause I shoot music videos
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
@@treyman4469 wow it's interesting to here you say that. If your fx30 is graining it makes me wonder if your using slog3? Or that you were underexposing, or using the second base is so when you shouldn't be. I personally feel like it's 10 times cleaner than the a6500. Not to mention just shooting video is a way better experience in every way. I hate shooting video on the 6500 now. I find when I need to film the fx30 I'm using my phone instead of the a6500. Just the way I feel personally. Now I am definitely going to have to do some side-by-side comparison LOL. The matter of the fact is that it may only be slightly better in noise control, but in every other way it is better for shooting video specially if you're vlogging. The flip-out screen is clutch and you can see yourself when you're recording which is already so much better for your recording experience. The controls all being at your fingertips to quickly change or white balance and iso. You also have three dials for shutter speed aperture and ISO. Their are tally light so that you know you're recording. Not to mention the 14 stops of dynamic range what is the S log3 it's just an option a6500 doesn't have and in my professional opinion of editing when I come from a graphic design background using lots of different editing your file capability blows the a6500 out of the water, hands down. Like I'm not trying to sell the fx30 so I have no reason to lie that I'm very surprised to hear somebody say it's a miner upgrade to the a6500. Not to mention I have the F-22 caged system on it. The quick-release top-handle and accessories plus the f30 baseplate built in so I can just slap it on a tripod pull it off and it works with arcawiss. There is not one reason why I would say the a6500 compares. The only thing that I can mention is that they are both APC and yes the noise handling probably is only minor better but it is still better.

@@TonyVsEarthell my friend borrowed my fx30 to film a music video for a rapper . He procrastinates , he had my camera 3 days making excuses saying, come on bro I promise I’m going to finish it . He said I’m glad you took your camera back and sold me the a6500 because it’s all mine and I don’t have to borrow no more . Hi, Tony, I retired two years ago, and enjoy motorcycle adventure travel, and plan to expand on that. I'd like to be able to learn the basics of cinematography, and get myself set up, to record/create content for my family and RU-vid. Probably going to budget about $3000 for equipment and training. I have a physics science background and am a "hands on to learn" sort of guy. Strongest skill is my ability to learn while doing.... Can you suggest a quick path to learn the basics so I can take the ball and run with it ? Also what will I need in terms of equipment. I'm intrigued by the FX30, but realize it's somewhat over my head currently. Would it be a good "learning platform camera", for one thing ? I don't want to have to buy a number of cameras as I learn, in other words. BTW, Tony thanks for your content. I enjoyed the video and it fuels my interests.
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
Unfortunately even for a fast learner there is no quick path. But if you have any artistic past and you have held a camera before you could pick up the basics by watching a few guys like Peter McKinnon, Mark Bone, Dunna did it, Jessy Driftwood or DSLR shooter. (good places to start!). I will be making tutorial vids coming soon so make sure to follow if you wish to see those. And yes I do think the FX30 would be a little hard to grasp at first but if your investing in something for video you would probably quickly grow into it and would regret going with anything less. Not just because of quality but shooting video with a camera that is meant to be a picture slr sucks (makes life difficult). If your going to go any cheaper get the zv-1 vlogging camera. It doesn't need to be a Sony but that is what I would buy. Canon, Lumix, and Fuji have similar camera bodies. Sony has third party lense support with lots of options. Just don't buy a canon rebel.

You want a tip...go watch a movie called Collateral with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx. My point is that with the FX30 you have a better camera than most 70k cinema cameras made before 2015. The FX30 is a beast regardless if it is a crop or not. The new Alexa is only a super 35 and is not great in low light. Also looks like you got the exposing of the SLOG down already and have bought the 2 stops over thing...
@TonyVsEarth
@TonyVsEarth Год назад
With it a doubt it's crazy how good the camera is. Goes to show that it's not really about gear, because it doesn't make me a better filmmaker lol. I'm really less concerned about being over with iso 800 and more so skin at 65% in normal daylight. 2 stops over with 2500 ISO just because it's less flexible and a little more noisy. To be honest I don't use iso 2500 very often. I'm often under zero on my light meter if my scene is dark anyway. But it really doesn't matter how you do it if it looks good 👍

No argument there but I have had absolutely no problem exposing this camera. The 14 stops the dynamic range with anything of an f 2.8 lower it's great. The first base ISO is 800 and I'm almost always cranking my ND filter to darken it

It's cool to see other people getting and exploring the potential of this camera. Using Cine EI is really helpful in managing the noise. That recording mode you mentioned is actually XAVCS-I for "Intra", It is a higher bit rate and does take up more drive space for sure. I tested a 1 minute clip at XAVC S-I was 2.22GB, recording at H.265 HQ on the Ninja V it compressed it down to 578MB, the raw file was 8.72GB on the Ninja V. Not something you would want to use for YT videos. I did a low light test in Cine EI on my channel following instruction on Sony's site on how to use it and it came out pretty good. Here is the video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-R_b2uCCjhfQ.html This will be useful for anyone using this camera to understand how to use Cine EI and the dual base ISO settings.
