Everyone varies.. I had double inguinal hernia surgery. I was in unbelievable pain for a week and my balls swelled up and turned purple. It took 10 days just to feel somewhat reasonable.

Very nice photo, Tony and thank you for the video! In mid-August, I am planning to go and camp in Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Preserve. I have a Nikon D3500 and a couple of prime lenses to take some shots. How is that place for camping? Is it nice and safe?

You may want to get there early as the designated calling areas can fill up quick. There is most certainly a chance of bears and or rattle snakes.

It takes your body to pretty much fully recover about 6 months to a year depending on your age and health. I would suggest you Do Not go back to work for 30 days after the surgery no matter what you do to prevent a recurrence. Be patient see your surgeon for a Post Opp at 28 days to see what he says.

Get this surgery. A complication you can have is strangulation of the colon. I had this. It makes the pain recovery from the surgery child's play. 10/10 on the pain scale. Not even morphine can touch it. 0/10 never again. For tips, try taking Bromelain Supplements. It tackles the inflammation. Taking gas-x for the gas helps too. There's also a med called Colace which is a stool sofener. This will help with bowel movements as they don't want you to make any pushing motions (and you won't wanna). Get a small pillow to press on the side whenever you have to cough or sneeze. Helps with pain.

I've had this twice! First time was an emergency situation as my hernia caused a strangulation in my colon. It was the first time in my life I was like, "Cut me open! Fix it! Fix it!". They had to cut me open and use those laparoscopy cameras. Second time it was just the cameras. Been good ever since!

Hey everyone , just thought I'd share my experience. I'm just over 4 weeks post inguinal hernia surgery. First week was pretty tough in bed most of the time , absolutely no pain just discomfort. From 2nd week I was moving around everyday day that went past I could noticeably feel improvment Now I'm walking and moving fine , still discomfort to sit and lay ect ... Seeing specialist next week for an update Anyone getting it done , don't be scared and don't delay it like I did for 5 years , I was so scared but wasn't a big deal at all 🙏

Just finishing day 2 of incisional hernia repair. Done laparoscopically and repaired with mesh. The hernia was a result of a stomach tube 17 years ago after my head took a major blow from a suicide bomb blast. Since my mouth was wired shut and I was in a coma it was the only way they could feed me and I still lost 30 pounds. Anyways, waking up from surgery was a major wake-up call. I tried to use my ab muscles and they spammed. Scared the sh#t out of me, so didn’t do THAT again, and we put on the girdle, pretty tight. Got home, tried to eat, but my mouth felt like it had been burned, so couldn’t eat much. The entire day had less than 500 calories so that by itself felt like crap. Had to get help getting in and out of bed. Had to get up and pee every 30 minutes or so due to POUR(Post Operative Urinary Restriction), so didn’t get much sleep. Also had the girdle on too tight, so made me go extra frequent. Throughout the night I’d loosen it every pee and it got better. The next AM I felt a ton better. Took a shower, got the pain med routine under control. Started Miralax just in case. I went without the girdle all day. I learned that carbonated drinks were a bad idea. I had a bottle of soda stream and a non-alcoholic beer when I realized it was blowing up my stomach and making me uncomfortable. That night I figured out a way to get in and out of bed alone without using my abs and the frequent pee problem started to get better. Today the burned mouth feeling is gone, the frequent pee is gone. I abstained from carbonated drinks, kept alternating Tylenol/Motrin every 4 hours, took a short walk every hour, and watched tv all day. It was a much better day than yesterday by far. I’m sure tomorrow will be even better. Haven’t had a bowel movement since Thursday, but have been eating fiber, apple juice, Colace and miralax, so when it’s time I should be okay, but am nervous I might have to bear down even a little. Coughing, clearing my throat, sneezing is an emotional event. That’s all I have. Thanks for all the testimonies on here.

I'm a 54 year old and had an umbilical hernia for the past 3 years that gradually grew larger. I finally met with my doctor and got scheduled for surgery. Unfortunately I am a smoker and a little over weight. I went in for my scheduled appt. had the procedure and when I regained conciseness my doctor told me that he removed a large mass of old scar tissue from an emergency ependisidus I had at 9 years old. Along some belly fat. The mass he described was about the size of 2 softballs. He then told me that he was going to keep me overnight because I had some issue with breathing while in the recovery. I had alot of fluid so he installed a temporary drainage bulb. I go tmrw which will be 6 days post surgery. I cannot wait for that. I was told to purchase a support belt and spent $30 for a good one. They didn't use it and fitted me with thier own. My first actual solid food meal after getting home was French fries! Before surgery I pre educated myself through RU-vid videos so I was prepared for the at home recovery such as eating lite meals and taking stool softeners, that helped alot! I have been keeping food intake very lightly. This is going on day 5 and I have had very little pain and some soreness but nothing unbearable. The tremadol he prescribed does nothing for me so I have been taking Tylenol and honestly it's for tremendous headaches. I did rum a little fever but that didn't last long at all. He also told me to expect to have to pee alot which a sip of water caused me to feel like I was peeing gallons every 30 minutes. 2 days after surgery was when I finally passed gas then about 2 hours later was when I had the first bowel movement. I didn't have any issues with that at all either. It was so weird that the gas and bowel movement was what kept me down. Soon after the initial bowel movement I felt 75% better. Then came the anticipated shower which felt so good I didn't want to get out of it. That night I slept like a newborn baby. I'm up moving around, I'm able to get up and down from sitting in my recliner, I'm able to get in and out of bed, sleep on either side but not my stomach as of yet. Today I plan on getting out of the house and walking just so I'm not feeling like I'm homebound or something. When I was 21 years old I did have a growin hernia so I had a little bit of pre insight of how this was gonna go but all in all I am starting to feel a little more sore now but I do expect that. I am feeling a lot better. Although I am legally disabled bcs of back and knee problems, I do plan on getting myself in better shape with exercise and eating right along with quitting smoking. That's going to be the next hurdle. I'm at the point where I'm ready to rid myself from this support belt and drain bulb but for the precautions I will wear the belt while doing activities. What I anticipated before all of this has actually been fairly surprising to me because I thought it would be very hard and frustrating to get over. I hope that anybody that has the umbilical surgery that reads my comments has an even better recovery than mine! Thanks for your time and inlightment on this subject. It does help to learn from others experience!

Tony, I just wanted to share a 2 month update. Everything is all good. For anyone who is considering the surgery I want to share my experiences. If you can, skip the pain meds. For the little relief I got, it wasn't worth the wait to go boom boom. Also, drink plenty of water because the first time I went, it was like rocks coming out. Pain was only really felt from going from prone to standing up. I always exhaled as I got up and it lessened the pain. For me, Day 16 still hurt and on Day 17 pain was completely gone. It was so weird. I had to wear the binder for 8 weeks post, but after about 4, I took it off at night and I was fine. I'm very happy that I had the surgery. I feel so much better and I dont have to look at the bump anymore Finally, I lost about 22 pounds and I only excercised sparingly after the first three weeks. Definitely didn't expect that Thanks again for sharing your experience, it definitely helped me prep for the surgery. Take care.

My left inguinal hernia was repaired with open surgery, not keyhole, under general anaesthetic in 2014 and it has been fine ever since. My right side was done 3 years ago, also open, but with local anaesthetic because of my age and existing heart problems. Okay, except you stay awake throughout the 45-minute procedure and listen to the doc talking to the nurse! However, I fear the recent one is coming back, since I'm getting the typical burning pain occasionally in the pubic area. For me the pain was excruciating for the first 3 days of recovery and I didn't feel pain-free for 2 months.

Tips and information for recovering from Hernia Surgery if you live alone. These are things you should do before you leave the house to go for surgery. Cook and prepare a week’s worth of meals and snacks before surgery. Meals that will be easy to pass through your digestive system. Things like vegetable soup with beans, carrots, celery…, oatmeal with prunes, egg salad, chicken salad, steamed carrots and broccoli, asparagus… low fat and low grease type foods. Snacks like apples, oranges, *ripe* bananas, all kinds of fruits are good to keep things moving. Start taking a stool softener one or two days before surgery and then continue taking it when you get home. Place something next to your toilet you can grab onto to help you get on and off the toilet. Do the same for your bed and other areas you may sit. Have toothpaste, toothbrush, and floss out and ready to use. A glass of water to rinse your mouth out. You’re not going to be able to bend over to _cup water_ in your hands. If you don’t already have a _grabber,_ get one. Do not take your phone to surgery. Leave your phone at home on your nightstand and fully charged. Have on hand at least two ice packs that you can wrap a clean cloth around to put over the location of surgery and rotate them from the freezer as needed. This will keep the swelling down. Read your after surgery instructions and follow them. Listen to your doctor and follow his/her orders. Keep the wound area clean and clean it with an antibacterial soap every morning and again before you go to bed at night. The next day get up and walk but be careful. I walked outside around the cul-de-sac four times a day starting the day right after surgery. Twice in the morning, once in the afternoon, and then again in the evening. Have clean sheets on your bed. Wear loose fitting clothes. Have plenty of water and Gatorade on hand and before you leave for surgery place a few bottles on your nightstand, computer desk, kitchen table, kitchen counters, your television chair, and in your refrigerator. Drink plenty of liquids. At least four bottles per day. Take pain medication as needed but don’t over do it. All pain medications can cause constipation. A thermometer on your nightstand. A list of movies you may want to watch. I not going to sugarcoat this for you. The first three days are going to be tough so be ready. It gets easier on your fourth day. Good luck and I hope this helps.

i had bilateral inguinal surgery a week ago....i guess some people are not great with pain. i have 4 kids, 6 and under. i was up with the kids the second day lol. I went to work after 4 days and i was at the gym after a week lol. (just doing arms curls and light shoulder raises) Heres advice! do not just sit around its much worse. walk as much as you can to get things moving. I walked two miles 6 days post op. my only issue is my balls hurt. as far as not lifting 10lbs thats pretty insane. i think you just need to understand how your abdomen works. i can easily hold weights in my hand that are not going to have any effect of my hernias.

Good to hear that your experience was as good as it was. It’s crazy how it can be so different for some people. The doctors had also removed a large lipoma for me. I think the pain might have a lot to do with many people needing tissue manipulation in order for the doctors to get at said hernia. I’m assuming yours was very straightforward they stitched up your hole and you were done.

I'm now 4 weeks out of my surgery for a large dual umbilical hernia repair. I'm a 40 years old daily gym goer in above average shape for my age. I relied on the heavy pain killers for the first 4 days and then weened myself off of them over the next 3 days. By week 2, I was able to move around a lot better and do some light house chores like cooking and dishes. By week 3, I was taking regular daily walks of about 3kms at a time although I will admit that my energy levels were very low afterwards. I found myself napping twice a day despite loathing daytime naps. Week 4, I feel great overall despite still suffering from extreme fatigue in the afternoons. To anyone dreading this procedure I would just say that the surgery itself isn't so bad. The pain fades within a week or so. The real annoyance for me is just the overall lack of energy that has persisted into my 4th week. I'm used to having an abundance of energy and I'm looking forward to it coming back over the next few weeks.

I hope they help you. I’m not sure I can really suggest anything for you in your current position but after surgery you should not curl into a ball while sleeping. It will be hard to lay flat at night but it will be worse to try and straighten back out in the morning if you don’t. I found the more I pushed myself to move the quicker I got better. Of course without hurting yourself. Some people have said to ask for a medical binder. That is supposed to help, but I never knew of such things while I had mine done. Also don’t forget fibre. Nothing like a stuck poop after surgery lol. All the best to you!
