Brass is expensive and heavy, but it obturates very well, and releases readily compared to steel or aluminum. This is why it is still used despite many attempts at other materials. Of course new alloys are being created all the time with different properties. I would be interested in how much blow by these cases produce compared to brass (of course a MP5, with it's fluted chamber, is not the best gun to test that particular metric). Regardless, it will be interesting to see how it shakes out. I am all for more loadings and cheeper ammo.

For reloaders, 9mm is effectively free and plentiful. It is hard to compete with free. In normal pressure ranges, 9mm brass effectively never wears out. IMO, this would only have merit if it enables the reloader to safely use higher pressure loadings than they otherwise ould. I think the same applies for commercial loaders. If underwood or similar can make hotter ammo than normal for a given pressure to the chamber, then this stuff is worthwhile. Otherwise it is a sunk cost with no tangeable benefit.

I would say the benefit here has nothing to do with reloading. the case is cheaper and lighter than brass. obviously that has some applications for the military where both cost and weight are huge limiting factors as each soldier has to carry all his ammo. In 9mm in the civilian market obviously there isn't much appeal, but try it in 556, 6.5 grendel, or 308 in an environment where you need to carry hundreds of rounds by in a pack and now you are talking significant savings in weight and cost.
@THX..1138
@THX..1138 7 лет назад
Yeah, the only advantage I see is weight and it's magnetic which makes policing up your cases easy. Unless your carrying a lot of ammo the weight saving aren't significant. On cost they're full of crap it about being cheaper. You can get new brass for 30% less than this stuff and once fired brass for 50% less or for free from the trash at a pubic range.

Free 9mm brass is too easy to find to make me want to buy this stuff, but I can't wait to see them make other calibers that are harder to find. Like 7.62x39, 300 blk, 10mm and even 357, 44 mag and 45 Colt. I bet 30 carbine, 7.62x54R, 303 Brit, 38 super and 357 sig will be popular with reloaders too.

I met a fellow from that company at SHOT last year. The cases are cool idea. IIRC the case head and body are joined by there being a cylindrical shank at the base of the body that passes through the primer pocket of the case head. This shank is pressed over like a rivet and affixes the body and head. The center of said rivet constitutes the flash hole and is responsible for the flash hole being larger than average spec. Only time will tell if it is a good idea - it certainly has a lot of advantages going for it. Thanks for sharing !

That is one fine looking canine. He didn't actually move until you triggered him. If you watch his behavior he is scanning while you stroke his back but after you steady your hand he locks on to your target as you point. As you slide your steady hand from the top of his back to his side he engages the target.

if u take the bullet from the liberty civil defense 50g +p 9mm its possible to load a 9mm that is less then 100g in total weight of the whole bullet with these cases. primer + case + powder + bullet. now that is what i call amazing. not to mention u can make that original 2000 fps 9mm go faster bc the case will allow for it. if all this works it will change things thats for sure

You should do some ballistics and barrier penetration tests on that L-Tech ammo. I would love to see it againsts some types of meats and some bone. I saw DocTacDad shoot it into some over recycled clear gel, not sure if that effects testing. I would really love ShootingTheBull410 to see how it does with organic ballistics gel from a short barrel pistol.

Very skeptical especially with all the glowing reviews, Guess We will have to wait a see. How do these rounds preform after longer term storage, will this cause separation? How well will they reload, or can they be? Brass still has many advantages.

@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 7 лет назад
I'll take brass because I can reload a 9mm case 5-10 times (before I lose them) with cheap $25 lee dies. Steel or aluminum cases tend to be hard on dies and I want nothing to do with cases that provide a weak spot for case head separation.
@TWANGnBANG
@TWANGnBANG 7 лет назад
The case head is not a pressurized part in this design, though. The stainless cylinder actually extends inside all the way to the flash hole.
@HughesEnterprises
@HughesEnterprises 7 лет назад
+TWANGnBANG what's keeping the steel from work hardening though? If you're full length sizing, expanding the neck to accept a flat base bullet, and then taper crimping, there is no chance of getting 40 reloads out of this thing. I'm guessing lots of cracked case mouths after the first few firings. I have a feeling their dies aren't returning the cases to factory dimensions every time or there is some other compromise being made in the reloading process. Reloads work great in the generous chambers of an MP5 or Uzi, but what about a Luger, P38, Hi Power, or other more picky autoloading design?

correct me if im wrong but isnt brass cases expanding a griping the chamber walls functional so the bolt face isnt taking as hard of a hit. i believe thats why they say to makes sure theres no oil in your chamber. atleast in my revolvers id think slicker cases just means id need endplay shims sooner.
@AreThereNoMoreNames
@AreThereNoMoreNames 7 лет назад
Oil can effect the case expansion and shot start pressure, so that's more of a concern, and brass is a natural material for dry bearings, so the stainless steel likely won't reduce bolt thrust.

@normanm5254
@normanm5254 7 лет назад
So let's sum this up... - 50% lighter - 33% cheaper - More durable (can be reloaded more times than brass) - Somewhat magnetic (or at least magnetic ENOUGH) - Easier to load into mags due to less friction - Theoretically will have better reliability when being stripped from mags due to less friction - The way it acts in the chamber upon and after being fired also suggests improved reliability - Cool to the touch upon ejection - Can have differently coloured rims (possibly a better system than painting bullets of different types of ammo?) The only downsides I can possibly see from this is... - Chambers overheating more quickly due to the casing apparently not absorbing much heat (theoretically if brass retains heat, then that's heat that is taken OUT of the chamber, but then again theoretically if this NAS3 stuff doesn't absorb ammo, maybe it can prevent powder from cooking off in a hot chamber as quickly as brass?) - Rim becoming damaged more quickly due to being made of aluminium rather than brass? (I don't know if brass is more robust or if aluminium is, it is probably aluminium so this is probably a non-issue.) - Separation of the rim from the bottom of the casing due to wear/tear/abuse (not exactly an issue with civilians, but with the Military, Murphy's Law can be a fatal issue. If these casings can last being reloaded and fired over 30 times though, then it seems to me that it can survive whatever abuse you put through it before being fired once.) That's pretty much it. The only downsides I can think of are only theoretical, and we'll probably have to wait for Military testing to tell us what the downsides are to these casings (if any) when compared to brass. Personally, I think that either none of these negatives are issues, or if any are, they will be negligible at most. If it DOES cause overheating to the chamber slightly faster than when using brass casings, then the soldiers would likely be trained to keep the bolt open once the shooting is done, and to not leave a round chambered for a designated amount of time before you can allow the bolt to drop and chamber a cartridge. Which would you prefer? Being able to carry more ammunition and having more ammunition available for training (due to how cheap it is) but having to keep the chamber empty after the shooting is over, or sticking with brass casings which are heavier, more costly, but not as much of an issue to leave in an empty chamber? It seems pretty obvious to me. My prediction is after a few months and several thousand rounds of testing, as well as testing the average amount of fire needed to cook off a brass casing vs an NAS3 casing, Nato nations will begin changing from brass to this stuff. As for Russia or China, we'll see. But I think in 5 years time, in early 2022, it will be rare to see people using brass cased ammo. MAYBE rimfire .22 ammo will stick to brass, but that's about it. In 20 years time, 2037, using brass casings will be positively hipster, perhaps reserved primarily for Cowboy Action Shooting just to try and keep it accurate to the period they're replicating, and people will probably enjoy taking a shot and then immediately picking up the brass casing just to see if it's as hot as the stories say. I think that sums it up nicely. Cowboy Action Shooting and big fans of history who want to use brass ammo to replicate what civilian shooters and soldiers from decades and over a century ago used. For anyone who actually read all this, what do you think? Figure this stuff will just be a fad and will be rejected for Military use? If so, why? Going to be interesting though; imagine buying milsurp ammo in 20-40 years time and finding date stamps on the rims setting it to the late 2010s or early 2020s, saying to yourself "I remember when this stuff was just invented, and being experimented with by people on RU-vid. Some people thought it wouldn't go far, but here it is, in my hand, having sat in storage for so long, even through Korean War II, and now it's mine." Going to be something else though for how it'll affect ammo costs; to my knowledge, the brass casings have always been the most expensive part of a cartridge. With that expensive part now roughly 33% cheaper, who knows, maybe it'll knock down the price of a box of 50 pistol rounds by 20%. If it cost, say, $20 before (it's been quite a while since I bought ammo, can't remember the cost), now it'll be $16. Did it cost $150 to buy 500 rounds in bulk? Well now it's $120! That's only 24 cents per round! A Glock 19 with 15+1 has less than $4.00 worth of ammo in it!

TWANGnBANG Yep I am talking about taking it up a notch from the +p+. This could be a really cool tool for us reloaders. I just wonder what part fails first on the case? Do they split or blow a primer, it is very interesting that they don't stretch like brass so there has to be a lot of thinking that would need to happen by the people that get paid to think about these things. There is just a lot of head scratching but it could be the next step in ammo development. As you know we have seen things come and go about as fast as breakfast burrito at 3 in the morning. Excellent shooting, wonderful grouping out of auto MP5? From your demo, your target grouping outperforms Kriss Vector. Californians need these kinds of 2A rights. I got hundreds of these 9mm shellshock case rounds and haven't been able to use it indoor range, because it's prohibited. Outdoor range, hard to find that's closeby at southern California.

Not with that attitude. I made a removable desk mount for my press from scrap lumber. That, plus components and books...could probably fit in 5 gallon bucket. Maybe one and a half five-gallon buckets. Apply yourself, man :)

diamondheat9 if you are short on space.... mount a bench vice (if u don't have one) Then mount press and other large tools to their own chunk of 4x4. Plenty solid if u use good hardware. Then just clamp whichever tool you are using at the time into the vice. The others can stay put away. Essentially all the space you need is the space of the vice and reloading trays. The tools don't even have to be stored nearby.

Its cheaper to make for the bullet manufacturer but they wont pass that saving on to the consumer. They will undoubtedly charge more for these than brass.

They will charge what they think the market can bear, but ammo already being loaded by smaller manufacturers seems to be priced with savings over brass.

Who makes toxic free primers? I'm assuming this means they don't contain lead or antimony. Also I think most stopped using mercury in primers a while ago.
@TWANGnBANG

I never said "toxic free." There are definitely more environmentally friendly primers on the market that contain no lead.

I've shot a case of these in FMJ from Oak Island with no issues. I also shot a 50 round box of the shellshock + XTP +P loads from creedmore and they're in my carry mags. The pressure tolerances of these cases alone tell you they're probably safer than nickel plated brass could ever be. And they are promising more calibers.

So, when you load steel cased ammo into a magazine, the "STEEL GRINDS ON STEEL"? I can't tell by feel the difference between aluminum from brass or steel! And other than aluminum being more fragile and un-reloadable, now i have to buy all new reloading dies just for these casings, AND i also have to buy special primers? No thanks.

I wonder how it handles galvanic corrosion between case and mag, chamber, or breech face if you leave the gun loaded for a long time. proprietary dies? pass.
@GunFunZS
@GunFunZS 7 лет назад
Brass is particularly crappy in that reguard, since the zinc and tin in it are both highly reactive metals. SS is way lower. Also brass near alumnium firearms components is asking for galvanic corrosion. -- firearm user on commercial fishing boats, from a boat building family. I've done a bunch of marine fabrication and modificaiton. You see first hand the worst case scenario for this. Brass + aluminum = battery and flaky aluminum. If anything not having more brass on an aluminum boat or airplane has some merit. Stray brass on a boat is poison to the hull.

@@GunFunZS I worked on fishing boat in Alaska for 15 years in the factory. Stainless steel piping with aluminum flanges corroded horribly. But then they were constantly hit with salt water in factory. Interesting to see if these pan out.

Is there anything neutral between the aluminum and the steel? Those are dissimilar metals and because there’s one less covalent electron in the aluminum than carbon it causes ionization and rapid corrosion. We see this a lot in the auto industry

Stainless steel reacts with aluminum causing the aluminum to corrode in a relatively fast time frame. This is well-known basic chemistry! Creating popular in-demand ammo that is cheap and designed with a short shelf life seems suspicious. This company needs to explain to all of us how their special proprietary bonding technique works to prevent corrosion from quickly attacking the very point in the case wall where ordinary operating pressure would force a catastrophic case separation. Maybe this ammo should be called, “Time Bomb Ammo” if that company continues to refuse to show how they overcame basic chemistry.

Just because the cases can support higher pressures doesn't mean that the gun will be able to, especially when you factor in that many handguns don't have the same amount of chamber support as many carbines do.
@TWANGnBANG
@TWANGnBANG 7 лет назад
One point I forgot to mention is that the NAS3 doesn't balloon like brass in unsupported chambers. However, you're right that safe pressure is as much a function of the gun as it is the case.
