I know for myself I have some issues because of my nerve damage in my spine and modulation can be a bit tricky for me. So soon after I had installed Shimano XT trail 2013 two piston set up on my XC hard tail 29er, and certain situations I needed just a little bit more power, I swapped my 160mm rotors for 180mm and is absolutely perfect for me. Alot of people who tried my bike say the brakes are way too strong, but they work perfect for me and actually find I don't need to be holding them as long as other people do in the same sections. So for me , 2 piston with bigger rotors worked perfect instead of dumping my new 2 piston for 4 piston. Now this all happened back in 2013/ 2014 and it's worked all these years, tried and true for me. As much as I want a newer set of 4 piston, I can't justify the cost when mine work so well. Great video, cheers!

The main difference between pot brakes is that 4 pot brakes (if you can transfer the braking power) have a bigger "pot area". This is the main difference, if you would have a big two piston brake your braking power would be as strong as a four piston brake only a bit chunkier looking (that's why they use 2 pistons in the most cars) But I agree that enduro and Downhill benefit from four pots, two pots are for xc and trail riding, for hard trailriding and allmountain why not using a four Pot in the front two in the rear.

Certainly is I currently have xt 8020 4 pot on the front with 203mm ice tech pads and disc and a m8000 2 pot xt on the rear with 180mm disc but use organic pads in the rear I find this the best combo for my riding style a bit random I no but I just like the feel of it I can control the rear end under heavy breaking much better.

Going from 2 pot 180mm to 4 pot 180mm or going from 2 pot 180mm to 2 pot 203mm. How much difference would either make in both braking power, but also feel? Does other give better, more linear braking feel?

I run 4 pots at both ends, but with 203's up front and 180mm dia discs at the back. The real jedi move though is to run with asymmetric pads ie to run with one sintered high performance pad in one side of the caliper, and one soft organic pad in the other side! The soft one works when it's cold and wet and you're XCing, and the hard one when it's hot and you're DHing! Gives a massive wide operating window, and tends not to squeal (because the natural frequency of the pads is different) Swap 'em side to side to even up the wear on the discs.

I have a question: what do you think about using a 4-piston brakes on front and a 2-piston on the back? On motorcycles usually the front brake is much more powerful. Why we are not doing the same with MTB?

6:50 Number of pots is _all_ about the power. If 2 pistons provide sufficient power, then they are powerful enough. Number of pistons has fuck all to do with fade. That's about pads overheating i.e. wrong pad material / too small rotors / insufficient cooling etc etc... ETA - reason for more pots is larger / longer pads for larger & narrower discs - getting sufficient hydraulic load spread on a narrower / longer pad = more pistons required (my comments are from MC applications where MTB is playing catch up so this may still be about hype etc in an MTB setup)

Switching to Hydraulics (2 piston Sram Level TL) from cables was an absolute quantum leap. Going up to 4 piston Sram Guide R was a noticeable step in power & much more modulation. Worth the investment & stops my fully laden bikepacker very well! Coming from a motorcycle background where three pot monster calipers were the norm, I am blown away by the lightness & feel of 2 pot MTB hydros & it's pocket change by comparison! Oh yeah, & surely you need to do a "how we capture & edit this kind of footage" type of video? Beautifully done!

How about comparing the impact of a larger rotor vs. on 2 pot brakes vs 4 pot on the 180mm rotors? Larger brake rotor also weighs more than smaller and can dissipate more heat while requiring less lever force.

I have 2 pistons 180 front and 160 rear. I have definitely experienced rear brake fade while riding in Northern CA. Since my pads are nearly gone, my bro gifted me a set of beautiful SLX 4 piston brakes with icetec freeza rotors. The rear will be upgraded to a 180mm rotor since I do ride a few long descents where braking is a bit more 50/50 vs 70/30.

Beautifully shot video however how can you compare 4 piston vs 2 piston brakes when you're using to very different mountain bikes with different rider weights as well? Not an accurate test IMHO.

Do you have opinions regarding the functionality with the different materials the brake pistons are made from? Phonalic or?... Running cooler?, etc.
