5 Years later my pear trees are rockin'! This advice still stands. Choose a fireblight-resistant variety if you're growing in a high fireblight-pressure area. Additionally, squirrels, raccoons, and some birds may damage your pears prematurely. It's always worth employing a wildlife protection strategy before planting fruit trees.

All fruit trees like to have maximum light and air flow. Depending on rootstock, 10 foot spacing is generally acceptable.

Ross, the best Asian pear is the 20 Century pear, it usually problem free. That;'s the only fruit tree i grow other than figs and some berries, its worth your while to give it a try. Good luck.

Rookie question here....but why are your trees so darn close together? If you’re running a nursery then it won’t matter, but once some of these pear trees grow to full height and width, I could imagine you’ll have some issues

I've grown a couple pear trees from seed almost 3 years ago. They're about 6 ft tall and looking really good with great branching. I just looked at them close today and they have thorns! Have you ever heard of such a thing?
@CampingforCool41
@CampingforCool41 Год назад
Yes some varieties of wild pears have thorns. Whatever tree you got the seeds from, it’s likely it was pollinated by one of these wild varieties. They can be kinda invasive too.

More established trees are capable of withstanding fireblight if you're new try moonglow which is naturally resistant to fireblight keiffer is also good it's a mix of a European pear tree and Chinese

I need some insight. My pears grow to the size of a large marble but stop growing any larger. The trees are 6yrs old. Any ideas why this might be happening?
@chickenfarm09
@chickenfarm09 5 лет назад
Brambles, malus species and pears can all get fireblight, so it is hard to say what is spreading it. Bees carry it from bloom to bloom, and also splashing rain.

You have to "Prune Top" it. I waited 10+ years... Until I decided to CHOP THE TOP OFF.....Here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AUBnRP3yC_M.html

You need to do something in particular after you pick them. I think you have to put them in the fridge for a couple weeks or something. They’re not supposed to be eaten off the tree. Do some more research.

We had no idea that we had this pear tree and now WHOA! This tree is going nuts producing fruit! What we want to know is how to make sure it doesn't have disease and how to make sure the fruit is safe. Suggestions? ❤ 🍐

Mate, You need to space them more and put them in full sun. Also if you cut it down to the ground you will be growing pears from the rootstock. Good luck

Pear trees are not the only ones that can spread fireblight. Pyrocantha harbors the bacteria but is not suceptical to the disease.

Ross, try to get the pear tree from a local grower if you can. Fortunately I have several growers who raise the stock in this hot climate and then graft to it. These trees do a lot better than the ones I get from California where the climate is great.

I believe that my wild nature( birds, squirrels, etc.) have to communicate with me….if they want my fruits then they have to wait until the fruits are ready otherwise it is war….sounds unreasonable? Well I am unreasonable when it comes to my fruits….

Too bad you didn't catch it in time. My Hosui is also infected, they seem very susceptible. My Shinseki seems to be resistant. Chojuro is good so far but only 3 years old. Fireblight is very common and unavoidable in my area.

Hang some plastic fruits in your trees and the birds will peck it and realize there’s nothing there a d start leaving the tree alone. A water source helps too. They are pecking the fruits to get a drink
