We take a look at the rain catchment system on the tiny cabin with first flush pipe and IBC Tote and then we create an ad-hok rainwater harvesting system on the shed roof for some added planting power on the other side of the yard using a barrel pump and a blue 55 gal barrel.

I like what you did, but l think you’ll need to reinforce your eaves trough or it will collapse with the weight of snow in winter.

Two winters in and seems to be holding well. IT's the same system as on most homes out this way, so I guess it'll do. Thanks for watching

To me it looked like the makeshift fasteners could unravel, but if they’ve held for two winters, then they’re good :)

Hello! Im from NY near CT. Im not sure where you are from, but I’m wondering if you have any issues with freezing? Im thinking I might have to bury tanks in my climate. Also did you mount the tank off the ground for gravity feed?

Hi Sheryl. Yeah we're in the Canadian Prairies so it's below freezing temps for at least half the year. At his stage we don't have these catchments working through those temps we simply drain the systems in early October and then reset for the May showers. Yes, we raised the tank as high as we could to gain pressure for gravity feed. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for going over this so throughly! Question: how did you measure/estimate the length of your first flush pipe so that you can feel fairly certain that the whole first run of roof water gets trapped in there? Hope that makes sense.
@HayWoodsandWetlands
@HayWoodsandWetlands 5 лет назад
It does make sense, yes. Based on the size of the roof you can calculate the volume of water the pipe must hold based on it's length and diameter to give you a clean wash. I think I used some online equations to figure it out. Just search for First Flush Calculations and you should find the math you need. Thanks for watching

I sure enjoy your videos that you are sharing with us. Question: Are you using screws to put the water stand together with. Screws have a very low shear factor and will fail if you put a lot of weight on them (ie a full water tank with a 1,000 litres). I would recommend that you use bolts and washers to make the stand secure. We never used screws to attach buildings to foundations.

Thanks for the comments. The weight of water is distributed at the 4 corners where the 4x4 posts run down to the concrete blocks. The braces and plywood are assembled with screws but are not in any way load bearing.

I thought for sure you were going to make the downspout a little taller & notch a V & have a "backsplash" to catch any faster larger amounts ot water that would otherwise overrun the downspout
@HayWoodsandWetlands

We'll see how this performs in a real downpour. We may need to make version 2.0 in which your predictions may be well advised. Thanks for watching!

Its a bit primitive, but works and is cheap. Let see after a winter, but for now a good job..! O, keep your pump in, in the winter.

We've gone through two winters with the cabin system so far. Obviously in our northern climate we drain everything out and let it winter dry. The shed system I'm a little worried that the snow load will pull out makeshift gutter off, but time will tell. THanks for watching.

Is there a reason you seem to always avoid filming or mentioning the yurt built to the right of the cabin? It's shown in the drone footage of a couple of your older videos.

Easter eggs at this point. I'll be introducing the secret yurt very soon. Stay tuned.
