Former Ryokami Village occupies the watersheds of the Susuki and Komori Rivers, branches of the Arakawa River, which originate from Mt. Mt. Ryokami is one of the "Three Mountains of Chichibu" along with Mt. Mitsumine and Mt. Buko, and is also one of the major sacred sites in Chichibu. The industry in this area used to be timber and silk reeling, but the population is currently declining. In recent years, cucumbers, kidney beans, konnyaku and shiitake mushrooms have been produced.
The villages we visited this time were Ryokami Usudehara and Ryokami Usudehara, which were formed on the gentle slopes on the left bank of two valleys carved by the Susuki River, which originates on the north side of Mt. Ryokami, and the Komori River, which flows on the south side. Ryokami Komori Sugawara.
The houses that make up each village are two-story gabled houses with balconies, similar to the sericulture farms found in the western mountainous area of Gunma Prefecture. However, it seems that the depth of the balcony is smaller than that of the sericulture farms in Gunma Prefecture. Idehara Village is located near a river, so it is hard to call it a "village in heaven", but it is worth seeing as a village landscape with many stone walls and old private houses. Susugawa, on the other hand, is a splendid 'village of heaven', second only to the Tochimoto and Aso districts of the former Otaki Village (now Otaki, Chichibu City), also in Okuchichibu. It is said that this village was pioneered by predecessors who immigrated from Gunma Prefecture, and it is possible that it was built around the same time, as the houses of the same construction are regularly arranged. The morphology of the settlement is very characteristic.
