Two Scots draw the crowds to Carlisle.
Royal Scot and Scots Guardsman
plus other trains.
11 Feb 23
Locomotive Services and Saphos Trains ran The Lakelander from Rugby, with Royal Scot taking over from Preston. Behind it West Coast Railways and the railway Touring Co ran The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express from London Euston, with Scots Guardsman at the helm from Carnforth. The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express ran south via the settle & Carlisle Line whilst the Lakelander went around the Cumbrian Coast.
While LSL had arranged for their entire train to go to Upperby for servicing and turning, West Coast's stock stayed in Platform 3 while Scots Guardsman turned via London Road, Bog Junction and Currock Junction before being watered in High Wapping Sidings, adjacent to Carlisle Power signal Box. Thus I was able to take advantage of Guardsman on the old Goods Lines at Bog Junction and returning towards Citadel over the tightly curved Maryport & Carlisle line from Currock.
I also got shots of Scots Guardsman from different angles at High Wapping.
There were a lot of enthusiasts at the station today, especially when the passengers from the Lakelander were after photos etc of Scots Guardsman. It was well overcrowded on Platform 4 and to an extent on Platform 3. Thus a lot of people jostling to see around their neighbours. I did my best in the circumstances but was very frustrated, along with many others.
When it came to Royal Scot heading out, I chose to go to Currock for a long view from Currock Junction to the site of Cummersdale station.

A really great video Les giving a complete overview of the day. The platforms were very crowded making it somewhat difficult to get the best pictures. Your out of station shots were also very good and I particularly liked the images from Currock of the Royal Scot leaving Carlisle along the Cumbrian Coast Line. Thanks and Best Wishes.

Les, I am a big fan of your video's and you are certainly a master of the craft. As some have said, you frequently get the shots that elude others. As someone born in Westmorland but living in Southern England I really enjoy the northern atmosphere which oozes from your productions. But. . . I must take issue with your criticism of others taking footage getting in the way. Everyone, photographer or not has the same entitlement to space on the platform to view trains. Some years ago I actually stopped taking photographs because I realised I wasn't actually getting to watch any trains because I was too busy with the camera. I have on occasion since being berated by photographers because I have bagged a spot from which to view trains to which they apparently feel entitled. Why should anyone be criticised because they choose to savour at the moment rather than record it. I do recognise your words were aimed at fellow photographers but I think it's still part of the wider debate.
@LeslieGilpinRailways
@LeslieGilpinRailways Год назад
Thanks. I wasn't alone in being upset at the antics on the day. Often you can predict where people will be, and I certainly make allowance for that, but the level of jostling was over the top.
@Tinman22ify
@Tinman22ify Год назад
That's a very fair comment Les. I'm certainly not condoning any kind of jostling or other irresponsible behaviour.
@cedarcam
@cedarcam Год назад
@@Tinman22ify I always try to be accommodating when taking video and it would be nice if more were like that. I see myself on here allowing others a clear view above my head and keeping behind the yellow line. It is true what you say about busy with the camera, you do miss out on the sense of the occasion when using a camera. When it is very crowded like this I sometimes make the crowd part of the event rather than trying to dodge everyone in the way.

I have noticed a new diagram that travels when you are in bed, 1S04 BIRM INT - MOSSEND YARD. it's an overnight parcel delivery service run by VARAMIS RAIL. This service is pathed as a diesel ,leaves Birm 0010 hrs arrive Mossend 0641 hrs. Regards Ian.

Hi Les Some great video there despite the massed hordes of 'enthusiasts'. As you know the area you can get better views from your local vantage points rather than the Station, and with out all the pushing and shoving that goes on whenever steam locos appear, it must be stressfull for the station staff too. As ever good stuff Les, keep up the good work. Thanks
@LeslieGilpinRailways

Thanks Peter. I think I should have followed my first instinct to avoid the station. I'll try to remember next time!

Photograohy using mobiles phones has spoiled the hobby. All these people looking at the image at arms' length, getting into other peoples' view. If only the human eye could focus down to a few inches! That would resolve that problem. I was pleasantly surprised by the Currock location. It provided such an extended view of the departing train. [edited for spelling errors]
@LeslieGilpinRailways

Thanks. I personally do use my mobile occasionally usually with a tripod. I notice the younger enthusiasts working that way. The Currock location is great

Leslie, for how many years has 6V38, the log train, operated? Have there been gaps in recent years when it didn't? What was the woman swearing at about 4:10 on about? Annoyed at railway enthusiasts being on the platforms? Another quality video where you capture heaps of action. Very competently filmed!

@LeslieGilpinRailways
@LeslieGilpinRailways Год назад
Entitled? Moi? No not at all. Its always good to see enthusiasts enjoying themselves. Usually I , with friends who are regulars, work our way around the crowds but on this occasion the common civilities of the photo line just seems beyond a few people. Those yellow lines on the platform for safety purposes do help define a photo line which usually works.I'd say the entitled ones are those who ignore them.
