Set that table son. It’s not like I’m trying to get a quick recipe online from you and have to listen to your life story. You’re being able to tell a story while you teach or talk about a specific topic is a strength. Appreciate it and you.
4:21 I just want to "set the table" for you ROBBIE... I love your videos and your video formats. You don't need to "change your form" on your video structures they are great!
Hey Robbie C.. Just wanted to let you know that you are my go-to internet coach here on YT. I've learned so much from your vids and they have truly helped my game!! Love the intros.. Please do keep up the good work!
Robbie. Ask a runner about the whole "trapped with thoughts" thing. A big benefit of running is that you reach a point in a run where your body can't spend resources on those thoughts. It's just bliss.
Such a great lesson... our angle of throwing makes such an impact. People should bookmark this video and revisit it occasionally to be reminded of our tendency to get locked into one angle of throwing and then see the world and discs through that lens. Good stuff!
I think alot of us beginners, would love to see you teach a beginner, that throws the disc like 40-50 yds. And what your teaching would do to that beginners discgolf throws. Peace and love from Sweden ❣️🇸🇪🙏🏼
Ah, it was Straight Pig, not Precious Child...lol. I was with Josh when he found it. Glad you got it back! And thank you for setting the table. I am a FIRM believer in that, as witnessed by my videos...LOL. Such a great video with things we ALL should be thinking about but don't.
Robbie, the format is solid. I enjoy the table setting. Insight is valuable, and you bring it. It's the discussion portions of your videos where I learn and grasp the most. I think the best take from this video is that "shot shaping will change the distance potential."
As a newcomer, this is some very interesting information that i'll be trying out soon. I've watched so many videos and none have explained it so plainly as you have.
Robbie. Thank you. Thank you for helping us in REC remember that joy of the sport is really at the heart of our hobby. I’m all about guys that have time and space to address form but this is helpful for a 36 year old dad like me 🎉
Definitely good way to look at the discs. I have three discs that just flip over and fade off to the right and never come back. Two are sitting on my shelf currently. Definitely will be doing more feild work once it stops raining again. Thank you Robbie
Another amazing video! My game has increased dramatically because of you. I especially loved that you recapped what you had been talking about in this video. I enjoy your meandering storyteller style but it was nice to have the "take home" message so clearly stated.
Awesome video. All the more reason to do some field work with your drivers in order to play around with release angles. This is the only way to know what the discs in the bag are capable of. Great stuff. Thanks, Robbie!
Absolutely agreed with everything! Also from my personal experience, it's good to go back and re-test discs that you had previously written off as you make form changes. With techdisc I made a grip change that really improved my spin and wobble, even though my speed stayed about the same. Suddenly discs that were previously really flippy were now pretty straight because I was releasing them so much cleaner with more spin.
I work on making my form better then I step up to a teepad where I have to throw far and it's a 5' long teepad with a 3" step up onto it and it's a slippery rubber mat from tractor supply. There goes all my training. I found slowing down and shortening my x-step but speeding up my rotation and pull through has given me bigger, more accurate distance. Yeah, if I did a James Conrad run-up I could go 50' further, but I NEVER have that teepad distance to work with and even if I did, most of the throws are going to be wildly left or right. Keep up the great work Robbie!
Until this video, I didn’t even know I had a “natural throwing angle”! I’m pretty sure it’s hyzer because understable discs tend to fly straight and Overstable discs go way left. I couldn’t seem to control either the way I wanted. As a new DG player, I didn’t understand why that was happening. I’m going to spend more time on my throwing angle and try some discs that I’d given up on-like the Thunderbird. Thanks for another great video!
So good. I have had to learn this the hard way. These two tips are the two thoughts you must have on each shot, every threw of every hole in every round. What is the shot required? Then choose the correct disc. Then choose correct angle, taking into account your default angle. For instance, today at a tournament I made too many mental errors (first tourney since last November). Wrong disc or wrong angle. More often wrong angle bc the hyzer release is the hardest and most difficult for me. But I need that release to push my 162g Gstar Wraith to 350+. If I miss that angle and hit my default angel "flat" then it is not the same outcome. Quick note. The other two tips for distance among us AMs. Disc choice in relationships to your default angels. Plastic type and weight. This has taking my typical 280ft ft with max weight premium discs to 350+ with 158g premium plastic. I have touched 400 twice in the last month with 164g Pro Gorgon in calm flat conditions. Today I hit 425 @ H27 at BRP with HW R2L throwing 154g Zlite Nuke-right disc right angle. Never mind that I was 100ft past the pin. Wrong disc. But my furthest threw on flat ground.
Robbie, would love to see you do a video at one of the two Spring Villa courses in Opelika, AL. Elevation changes and woods course, a bit bigger than some of the Birmingham courses but very technical.
How you doing today Robbie? Great video and info, as always! Ive not thought of my natural throwing angle much, but now wonder if its naturally Hyzer... I have an Anax and Zone for my hard left shots, even Beasts need to get beat in a bit before they stay straight... Looking at me, people think I should be throwing massive bombs, but I sit around the 250-280. My approaches are where I feel my game is the best!
Thanks for reminding me to redouble my efforts to find a good place to do fieldwork near my home. I do most of my guessing and wondering in the woods on the course, and it's uh... hit or miss, at best.
Makes since and well put I kinda figured what you said but it didn't make since to me fully now it does what I use to do for angle control I would use all stability disc put a 3 foot circle out about 150 feet and try to land all my disc in that circle
As someone that just scratches the 400 foot mark, I love a "flippy" disc (fav. underworld) to power way down on and still get decent controllable distance. 🤘✌️
I'm experiencing this currently, Ever since i found the Discraft Hades i have always been really good with controlling the angle. A little later i got to the point were i now bag 3 Hades. One is a hyzer flip to late turn, One is a hyzer flip to flat, and another is hyzer flip to less hyzer. Recently I want to switch and try out Innova Terns but am finding i cant find one as flippy as my understable hades. I'm keeping the hades in the bag for tournaments and toss a tern in on casual rounds to beat in a bit, but its the first time i can confidently say that I dont think a disc works for me at the moment
I’m a very new disc golfer (played twice) and the ozone is actually giving me problems as well, which I didn’t expect. I’m aware it’s 100% my fault though. The inner core is my baby and i ripped the dune 290 a couple times last week, but only forehand. Lots to work on but having a blast. Thanks for all your helpful vids
This makes sense! I'm 6ft 5 with long lanky arms and i constantly turn my Diamond over to the right (almost roller like) so I must be a anheizer beginner. I even burn roc 3s over to the right by accident sometimes! Is it a form issue or do I just adjust disc choice to match my throwing style ?
Just wanted to say spin rate has a bit to do with point 2 as well. If you throw a mid or a putter hard with no spin it will turn and burn as well. I realized this when I got a glitch. It would release on extreme hyzer and turn all the way over until I really focused on spinning the disc.
I always throw backhands on hyzer and forehand on anhyzer. What numbers should I look for to be more straight? My forehands will usually sweep right to left without the disc turning back up stays on that angle most of the time. Now my backhand I always feel weak at, cause I just get hard fades to the left. Haven't played long and really can't just buy a ton of disc to find my best fit.
Before I started playing disc golf, I played Ultimate (practiced with the Whitecaps when the MLU existed). I went in being able to throw an Ultimate disc 80 yards. What increased my distance from 300ft to 400ft with a Destroyer was simply fixing my throwing form. What got me to 500ft was finally seasoning in my star & champion (took 9 months) Destroyers. Now I get full S flights when thrown flat and nose down. Unfortunately, none of the courses near me call for long throws like that, so you'll find me throwing my putter 320ft the majority of the time...
all you really need is 400 with a flippy disc, and a nice 350 one angle shot. Once I could easily throw 350- 400 I just stopped working on distance and focused on putting because every year a get older and slower.
Okay but what if you have discs that are super extra flippy? Say a dx 148g lepard that is very seasoned? I have never been able to get that disc to fly in the air past about 350ft. I cannot find an angle where it gets past that. But I can casually throw a champion teebird 350' and on my good days over 425' on a max shot, and I've gone over 500' with a pharaoh, shyke, mystere, corvette, and a prodidgy driver similar to these. Frankly, I really do feel like my leopard just actually can't find the angles to go noticably over 350' in the air with mere mortals throwing it. It was my first disc to go 350' back about 4 months-6 months into playing and it never really ever went past that again.
vis a vis storytelling, you and Jesse are both great story tellers. so let me reiterate that it's a real shame that Denver and Birmingham are so far apart. otherwise we could get more collaboration between the two of you.
Running, I count to 4 or 8 with each step. I focus on the timing, making sure it is the same cadence the entire time. It is my vacation from my brain. LOL
Next problem is when you are on a narrow wooded hole and experience a bit/a lot of headwind 🫣 I have learned to get good distance and straight flight with a Diamond on a hyzer. But with a 20 mph headwind the gap has to be really wide because there won’t be any angle I can get a straight flight. My conclusion: Satan invented wind to confuse disc golfers.
All this Eagle talk is making me sad. I lost my 11x Climo champ Eagle like three weeks ago and that thing had the most perfect and beautiful flight to it. Irreplaceable.
