I readied my weapons and proceeded to my transport, with my mind wrapped around the thought of whether or not I'll be coming back in one piece, or several pieces in a body bag. I couldn't concentrate on how close we were to ending this meaningless war. I was worried. This mission was treacherous for even the skills of the elite soldiers. I boarded the plane with my head down, unable to make a sound, and unable to to take my mind off of how dangerous this battle will be. The only problem was how far away from the capital building we were going to land, and how many enemies were standing in our way. We reached six hundred feet and deployed our parachutes. I could hear the enemy soldiers roaring in foreign tongue, getting louder and louder. My boots hit the ground first, giving me no orders to follow for a few seconds while the enemy soldiers were running toward our landing point. I took cover behind a small, concrete building and waited for the rest of my platoon to land. They landed shortly before the enemies invaded our landing point. I peeked my head out of cover and opened fire, suppressing them, yet I failed to control my shots and every bullet flew above the enemies even though they were standing just twenty feet from us. One of our higher ranked soldiers pushed me behind cover and opened fire as I reloaded my assault rifle. I couldn't tell if he killed them, but after 4 short burst shots, he yelled in a loud voice, "Move forward! Go!" I could only trust that they were all down. I got back on my feet and followed my platoon about two hundred yards forward, just doing as I was told just like during training. Further and further we pushed the hostiles back, but no casualties yet? I knew our platoon was at least at sergeant rank, except for a couple like me, but I didn't expect this. Maybe this will be easier than I thought. Another wave of enemies approached the street we were running on. "Get to cover," I yelled out of instinct. "Alright, Captain Obvious," a random soldier responded as we ran behind another small concrete building. I raised my weapon and ran to the other side of the building in attempt to flank the enemies, although without the order to flank. Only the ones peeking around the buildings had the opportunity to fire, so I had to try something, but one of the soldiers stopped me dead in my tracks. "Are you crazy?! Stay here! Follow your orders or get yourself killed," he yelled in my face. I refused to listen, for he had no authority over me. He was the same rank. I peeked around the corner and saw that no one was looking my way. I aimed down my sights and fired my weapon as the enemies started falling like dominoes. I reloaded my weapon and yelled, "Push forward!" The allies began to move down the street as I regrouped with them, concentrating on how close the end of the war was. And for the first time, I actually had a slight smile of confidence. "We've got a tank! Everyone get to cover! Now! Go! Go! Go," our platoon leader yelled as everyone scattered behind different buildings. I stayed with the leader who ran behind a six-story hotel, along with another soldier as the tank fired a round that landed just a few meters from our cover. He handed me a smoke grenade and grabbed a radio. "Gilbert, throw that red smoke grenade at that tank! I'll signal an air strike," he ordered. He moved out of my way so I could throw it. I threw the grenade and it landed on top of the tank and bounced off just beside it as the red smoke floated away in the weak wind. A USAF F-16 soared across the cloudy sky and dropped a small bomb on the tank, turning to a ball of fire and ash as it shook the earth. The pilot ascended into the clouds, beyond what the eyes could see. "Ha! I did it," I laughed in excitement of my success. The leader gave me a strange look of curiosity and questioned my excitement. "First time throwing something?" "This is my first battle, Sir," I answered with a smile. "Well welcome to hell, Gilbert," he said. "Now let's move! All clear! Move down the street! Go! Go! Go!" There was no more cover between us and the capital, except for the burning tank, but the red and blue flames coming off the steel was too hot to bear from even fifteen feet away. At this point it was all or nothing. Triumph, or oblivion. My heart racing, my body shaking, I sprinted out of cover as our platoon started to regroup from the buildings. "No matter what happens, keep pushing forward," the leader ordered. Enemy soldiers came around the capital building and opened fire on us as our comrades started taking hits. Two by two, our soldiers started to fall to the ground as the rest of us tried not to trip over them, but we continued to push forward regardless of the casualties. After running behind the platoon for a hundred yards, only a wounded and I got through the doors of the capital. We turned around and waited for the enemies to chase us. We fired our last few rounds at them, but managed to get them all. I looked to my right and saw the wounded soldier lying on the floor bleeding out. I rushed to him and tried to help him, but the life had already faded away. It was just me, and the enemy's prime minister and guards. I closed his eyelids and pulled out my desert eagle and continued through the hallways, looking for him, searching every room. After about two minutes of searching empty rooms and kicking doors, I ran around a corner in a hallway and there he was, jogging in the other direction. Two guards were protecting him. I aimed down my sights and fired at one of the guards, killing him first shot to the back of the head and alerting the other one who aimed his revolver at me. I quickly took cover around the corner as he fired five shots. I aimed around the corner and fired two more shots at the guard's chest and watched him drop his weapon and fall over as the prime minister picked it up and turned around to run. I began my pursuit, trying to get a shot on him as he started pushing over decorations to block my path. He rushed into a room and tried to slam the door, but I stopped it with my foot. I brought up my pistol and opened the door, certain of his imminent defeat, but I was deceived. He had already turned around and had his revolver aimed at the doorway. The unexpected sound of the gunshot rang in my ears. I looked down and saw a hole in the left side of my chest, with blood rushing out of it like water from a busted dam. I could hardly handle the pain. I hit the floor as he tried to shoot me again, but his weapon clicked from the lack of ammunition. He attempted to run toward mine and shoot me with it, but I picked it up and quickly aimed at him and fired, hitting him just above his nose as he dropped to the floor, lifeless. I put my hand over the wound in my chest, trying to treat the excruciating pain. I sat up with my back resting on the wall, pressing on the bullet wound. I heard a transmission from the radio. "Saber 9, this is Phantom Actual. Status?" My vision began to darken. "Prime minister is dead, but I need a medic." "We copy. Their choppers are down. We're on our way. Run, guys!" My muscles weakened. "Where are you guys?" "A kilometer east. We're almost there! Hang on!" Two minutes passed and my chest was numb. My voice was trembling. "Status?" "We're in the building now." I could barely see, but I looked to my right and saw four men run around the corner and faintly heard, "There he is!" I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore. One of them took my hand off the wound and started putting something over it as I felt pressure on my neck and heard, "We're losing him!" Of all the things going through my mind, there was one final thought, one that stood out, yet somehow, it left me with a feeling of glory. *"Victory* is ours."
