Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

The reason character bios tend not to be very useful is that they're often created out of context, where it's easy to just tack on traits. However, when you go out into the world, do you instantly know all there is to know about the people you encounter? No, you don't. You *discover* peoples' traits over time. The trick I use is to place myself in the characters' environment--the *story* environment. In that environment, you meet the characters... and they tend to do some interesting--often surprising--things.

these qualities often relate to external vs internal goal. matt damon in good will hunting always had the ability to get the engineering job, what he needed, what he got, was the ability to let someone in and trust again.

1:52 For side characters, yes. For MC and main antagonist, I disagree. There are a lot of good things to address and wasteful things in character bios. Good things include: (what author Brandon Sanderson calls PROMS) Pasts; Relationships; Obligations; Motivations; and Sensibilities --- Character Arc type: Transformation/Growth; Decline/Fall; Maturity; and Alteration. --- MC's goal (with the obstacles and the catch before attaining it) / Protagonist's fear (preventing him from going after the goal) and flaw (preventing him from attaining the goal). --- Character backstory (e.g. can a former friend or long, lost relative become a hindrance to the MC's goal?). --- MC memories (how can these directly alter the events of the story?) and recurring thoughts (that can haunt and prevent or help transform the MC). There are a lot of useful things. There are a lot of not-so-useful bits for character bios.

Contrast adds interest, it would be good to think of seemingly paradoxical conflicts as an invaluable writer's tool in general

I find that starting out with a stereotype is very effective. I usually run with that stereotype the entire first draft. Then the second draft is all about addind depth and complexity.

My take is that he's talking about contradiction. People we meet are full of contradictions - in both their behaviour and decisions. But they obviously don't intend to 'subvert' others, they simply have dreams and behaviour that seem at odds with *our own* perception or judgement of who they are, and what they want to be. I agree, character bios might be a waste of time, in a sense, if the writer creates a detailed and interesting history (with no contradiction) the character might still feel flat to the reader. Perhaps it's better to find the contradiction and dilemma (and flaw) in the character first, and then work on the bio/history for ways to play off that contradiction, and make it more compelling. Then all those choices about the character's past are not just procrastination, but serve a purpose.

Great tips!! many writers make the mistake of writing characters as if they were them (the writer)

I struggle with the very thing he stated; creating characters that feel real and are interesting. For me, it always becomes a very subjective process that only encounters validation through someone else's opinion.

In my current story I'm writing, I have two main characters & it's very uneven. The 2nd main character has bcm the lovable character you just cant live without & cant help but love. He is funny, witty, & somewhat rebellious against his wise baby sitter, who is babysitting him for 3 days as his parents go on a 2nd honeymoon to Hawii. The babysitter is 17, gay & desperate to lose his gay virginity. The yr is 1969 & its summer break in Suburbia, CA. The babysitter is a sweater vest nerd who still drives his rich Dad's car. The boy he has to babysit is adopted by rich white parents, but he himself is black & blind. The one thing they both have in common is their desire to fit into a world that rejects them. They have great chemistry & bcm best friends on day one, but like I said the story is lopsided bc I the babysitter has a lack of draw. The twist is that the babysitter is actually a rebel himself & HATES having to lay down the law & be the Man. Any ideas or suggestions for building up the babysitter?

Wow, I've actually been saying this for a long time. Although my take is that you don't need to add dimension to your character by forcing them to morally contradict who they are. So a lot of people seem to think that if you have a character who presents as a saint then you have to show to the audience in what way they are a "bad person" to make them truly multi-dimensional. Say instead that character was obsessed with gory horror movies, or loves to root for the bad guys. Suddenly it seems like the same heavy lifting is being done by an attribute that is essentially harmless. People don't even realize how much of these "contradictions" are socially engrained - that qualities which are amoral can add dimension. For example if a hardened criminal likes to watch children's cartoons that's not a "good" quality, it's just not one we associate with criminality, so it adds dimension.

Unfortunately Hollywood is obsessed with what the character looks like (so they can put them in a certain category). It's become all about "judge a book by its cover".

Great channel, great contents always. Would be much grateful if you guys can talk on the procedures through which you go as a filmmaker with an idea to make a movie and get it to the top and make money out of it. And also what's your views on an African amateur filmmaker with the Hollywood dream. Thanks
