Two way light switching explained

This video shows how to wire a two way light switching circuit, or a two way lighting circuit. I believe this is called a three way switching circuit in some countries. This video shows how to change a one way lighting circuit into a two way lighting circuit and also includes schematic diagrams of a basic lighting circuit and a schematic drawing of a two way switching circuit. When wiring a two way lighting circuit you will need two - two way light switches as well as some three core and earth cable to use as a strapper.

The amount of "bright" mates and family members who have asked me to help with two way switching is unreal, for some reason folks really struggle to understand the principle in theory let alone in real life. You've made a really good explanation and anyone who finds it complicated should frankly not be touching electrics.

Thinking of it as logical operations helped. The diagram specified describes a XOR table. Lamp lights when switches in different positions (one up and one down). The other lighting diagram mentioned in comments (Line to Com, L1 to L1, L2 to L2, Com to Lamp) is the opposite, a NXOR. Lamp lights when switches in same position (both up or down). Given OCD, probably a different diagram altogether: Line to Com, L1 to L2, L2 to L1, Com to Lamp. Reversing, gives you back a XOR. Lamp lights when switches in different positions (one up and one down). 😁

Just in process of adding a 2way in the garage. Currently has single batten light in the middle with the mains going direct to the light and the current single switch connected there. I'll run the 3 core from switch to switch front to back. Then I'm guessing I'll run a 2 core back to one of the switches. I need to add two more batten lights either side could I piggy back them from the middle, or need to wire them in series?

I'm confused by a new double switch I've just got. The old switch had the Y shape doings at the back but the new switch has 2 L1's on the one side & 2 L'2's on the other side. I put 1 wire in an L1 & the other in an L2 but they turn opposite lights on. So I then swapped to other L1 & L2 still the same but now one switch is down & one is up. What do I do?

It sounds like you have an intermediate switch. This might help- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h7qPuhxOyqw.html Sometimes there is nothing you can do about the switches being in the up and down position unless they are on a one way system, in which case the only way to fix it is to turn the switch upside down. There are a few ways of wiring these circuits up, and every electrician has their own way. Thanks for the video, I've sometimes seen this called the "conversion method" where you're adding and additional switch to an existing lighting circuit. Dimmer switch by bed non dimming switch by door. Undertook continuity check Door L1 blue to Bed blue all OK. Continuity check Door L2 yellow to Bed yellow all OK. Door Red COM to Bed Red COM no continuity. Is this my problem and does this mean rewiring and re-plastering?
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 3 года назад
You need to remove the light fitting and look at the wiring. There is a "cable saving" way of wiring two way lights, it is possible that they join at the ceiling light fitting, or even in a junction box (probably near the light fitting) If you remove the light fitting, you might find more wires than you should, it is possible that one of them has come loose. If it's wired as per a normal light - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DoVSdqeFkhE.html It looks like there is a break in the red conductor. Depending on where the break is will determine whether or not you need a rewire/re-plastering. If the cable is visible, in the loft etc. You can visually inspect it. The break might not be behind the plaster, so it is possible to cut and join the cable in the loft, providing the break can be found.

You just made something so simple much more difficult than it needs to be and also if wired up in real life you would be using more cable and time than needed. All you needed was Line to 1st switch Common, 2 strap wires (1st switch L1 to 2nd switch L1, 1st switch L2 to 2nd switch L2) and then 2nd switch Common to Light. There is no need for a 3rd cable in between the switches....
@ultimatehandyman

If you are wiring from scratch that could be done, but if modifying an existing light to make it two way then your method would be more difficult ;-) There's more than one way to skin a cat ;-)

@ppdan
@ppdan 7 лет назад
If you add a 2nd switch just feed a extra wire coming from the 2nd switch to the first switch, you would still have the same amount of cables going from the first to second switch but for it's easier to connect (you don't have 2 wires on a single connection point of the switches) and for safety you can de-energize the whole setup very easily because the live wire has a single point of connection. Make yourself a favor and don't use the method described in the video. I would even recommend that the poster of the video changes his video because using this wiring is a very bad because even an electrician who comes and sees that will be like "wtf who the hell did this mess"

In Italy it's called "deviatore", which translated is "diverter", more or les. So you get a "diverted light switch point". You can "cascade" them, using as much of them as you want (more or less huh), to control a light by one, two, three or more points.

Being from "across the pond" it's not easy for me to imagine this solution as helpful to understand a 3-way switch. I would have used the 4-conductor cable (black - hot, white - neutral, bare copper - ground, & red - an extra hot) to illustrate the most basic arrangement for a 3-way switch circuit (there are actually 9 or so ways these can be laid out depending on the placement of the lamps - which is why there is much confusion about them).
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 8 лет назад
Thanks, yes there are several ways to wire this but I used the method which I find easiest and would be the easiest for most DIY people as they would always be converting a single light to a two way system and would never be installing one from scratch. I have looked at a few sites that show the American way of wiring this and the switches are probably identical, its just the wiring colours that are different. Over here the bare earth wire (ground) has to be sheathed using green and yellow sleeving etc. Thanks for the comment

Just piggy back the live and neutral (and earth) from the lamp to the new lamps. Some people call it daisy chaining. 👍

Glad to see someone actually using L1 for the feed and com for switchline proving it doesn’t matter what way they go I always terminate this way for a1way switch that way L2 doesn’t become live when in off position

Hi, handyman. very happy with all your videos, especially the electrical ones ATM, as I'm now studying to be an electrician. If I am honest: in some cases, my tutor does not explain things the way it should be explained, (very rushed). However, the topic- two way/ three way and intermediate switching are what I'm currently on and it was only when I watched your videos and correspond with your thorough explanation, that was when I understood. on the other hand, I would love it if you could do a video on the easiest way of calculating resistivity in material, as I'm still slightly confused about the method!?Massive thanks to you mate. Kepp up the good work. Cheers. regards Lincoln from Essex`

Hi Lincoln, I'm glad the video's help. I'm afraid I don't do things like calculating the resistance of material as I'm a maintenance engineer and not an installation electrician. Best of luck with the course ;-)

Excellent. Like many others I've been scratching my head about this two way switching, and your explanation along with the practical demo caused the penny to finally drop. Now I'm off to get a couple of 2 way switches and a battery and hammer it home. Superb package all round, much respect !

Thanks Just used this as i couldnt work out how my configuration was layed out in my living room which just had 2 three cor and earths one in each socket. I coudnt realise why they both had a live when i testerd then without the switches. Your diagrams helped me realise the live and neutral splitting was happening in the ceiling not in the switch boxes. Peoples demos dont show this so maybe a good video for the future. Thanks again fron North Yorkshire.

Great video, but got me a question: What would happen to the wires / will wires burn or not in case of the following scenario: Switch 1: com-L1 and same time Switch 2: com-L1 Thanks ! Al.
@ultimatehandyman
@ultimatehandyman 7 лет назад
No wires will burn. It will either work or it won't work as you only have a live wire and wires that become live once they are part of the circuit. Thanks for the comment

The joys of intermediate switching! It`s easy enough to figure, intermediate switches have 4 connection terminals, so effectively you cut the pair of strappers, thus leaving 4 ends, which connect across the switch.
