While on a two week long horse pack trip in the Canadian wilderness, I film a day around our comfortable camp showing some of the chores we get up to like picketing and hobbling horses, building fire for sanitizing drinking water, bucking wood to keep the walltent stove stoked, outdoor camp cooking for two, and more of our life at camp.
Thanks for watching!

Hey Nickolas, great to see a video up. Seems like there is no shortage of dead standing around that camp of yours. You could build quite a shelter out there. Do you still have your winter shelter? Hope you make some winter videos. Thanks much for sharing this!

Love your old school approach! Glad to see you back at it. As much as I love the backcountry pursuits of summer in the Colorado Rockies for me, nothing beats the crisp mornings and warm days of a fall camp! And I fall in love with that Marlin ever time it makes an appearance in your videos! No safe queen there, a well used tool as it was meant to be with the character and scars of several lifetimes of adventure 👍

@wituikbws 7 месяцев назад
What do you mean?
@michaelmonnat7765
@michaelmonnat7765 7 месяцев назад
All RU-vid campers and so called off grid people, etc. spend a tremendous amount of time cutting, splitting "processing" (word I never heard until RU-vid people) wood. Campfires wood is meant to be simple. Drag something out of the woods and burn. Quit all the sawing, splitting, on and on. Put it on the fire. Heat stoves...quit splitting and "processing" (there's that word again) because large chunks burn longer. At bedtime put large chunks in stove and they will still be burning in am. Small split wood burns too fast. Does that explain it?
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 7 месяцев назад
@@michaelmonnat7765 Yeah that make sense. I only do processing like that at permanent camps where it makes sense to have split wood and kindling lying around

Fantastic and idyllic looking camp! Love those hats as well, they look so new and clean. What brands are they? I usually wear my straw Resistol for summer but I’ve got a nice Serratelli (looks like your dads) for my going to town hat and another cheaper one for winter wear. I look forward to your next upload, you never disappoint! 👍

Beautiful country in BC, I am really envious of this trip and experience. I just had one question. How do you pack all that gear on just two horses including riders, I see no other pack animals. I see the need for at least two other horses? Just curious about that part, unless you pre-setup part of the camp. Thanks and keep up the great videos
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 8 месяцев назад
We had 3 horses on this trip, one palamino, one bay, and one dark bay. Ideally we would've had atleast two pack horses, one for each of us to lead. I ended up doing 3 trips over the span of a few days packing in gear which worked out since the horse we were packing is green and needs miles on him and I had brought my girlfriend in and out for the weekend too. Getting all that unnecessary crap in there was probably the biggest challenge on this trip 🤣

Loved this video thank you for posting. I had a question about why you chose to hobble your horse. Wouldn’t that hinder their ability to get away from a predator (God forbid)? The cowbell is a great idea. Just curious and absolutely no hate, I know there’s mixed opinions on hobbling.
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 6 месяцев назад
The hobbles are so the horse doesn't take off back home. With two people and the dog around, I don't really worry about it, and he has already learnt to move in them pretty good too. The other two mares can run in them if they want 🤣

HI! Can you tell me about your hat? Try as I may, I haven't been able to have a western style stand up to pack trips. Are you just buying better felt and better at reshaping than me?
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 2 месяца назад
This hat was actually new at the time of this video, and I bought it for the same reason 😆 My original hat wasn't standing up to pack trips and I was tired of reshaping it every time it rained. That one was a 6x Smithbilt, this one is a 6x Justin. I figured if I got a new one and did my best to maintain it's shape with the fresh felt it'd last longer, so I've been spraying the hat with stiffener and steaming it every time I am back from a long trip, especially after it gets rained on. So far it hasn't lost its shape at all

I would like to know how you build your tent

We used poles cut with the axe and saw for everything. The front and back were lashed with the mantie ropes (ropes used for lashing packs togther for pack horses) and then staked down front to back, and the sides were staked down using the ropes that were already attatched to the tent walls. I would've liked to film it but we didn't have the time

I have a 10x12 Yakima western style tent like this. I use it in the winter. Also RK lodges might this size. I have one of their tents but not 10x12😊
