Two weeks with the Nikkor Z 180-600mm with photo samples!

Hi Everyone!
I've had the Nikkor Z 180-600mm for a couple weeks and took it out to a more urban environment to test it out. I found it to be quite versatile and the range to be fantastic. The short throw of 70 degrees is very handy while I'm still currently looking for a better tripod collar ring and Arca Swiss plate combination.
Let me know what you think of the photos! Have you used this lens? I'm curious to hear what you think about it too.
Filmed on Nikon Z 8 with Z 24-120mm f/4
Sennheiser MKE 600 Mic.

Photos are awesome! I just ordered this lens yesterday and I can't wait for it to arrive! This will be my first super-telephoto lens ever. Can't wait to use it in nature!

Glad to see I'm not the only one who finds the tripod foot on this lens uncomfortable for hand-holding 😆Looking forward to the third-party options. Otherwise I'm very pleased with this lens and it performs brilliantly. Nice photos Taku!

Have this on pre-order and just itching for it to arrive. I noticed the photo of the splashing water drops at 5:51 is listed at 800mm f/7.1. Assuming that is a type as to get to that FL you would need a 1.4TC which would take your aperature to a minimum of f/8-9.

Yes that would be a typo. It should have been 600mm, f/7.1. Thanks for the note!

You have to change the Arca plate with a 10 cm one as I put on mine and fits perfectly with my Z9 except the extra weight (less than yours)...

Does the 10cm one come with the support/anti twist screw as well? Cheers.

@@taku_kumabe It is up to the model... I have two with the extra screw... This lens need an 3/8-1/4 adapter for the second screw though...

Great video, thanks! May I ask the brand/model of the arca swiss plate used on the lens foot?

Thanks very much. It’s a Smallrig plate. Not sure of the model but you can search on their website. It’s too wide for my comfort though so I don’t recommend it if you like to hold the lens by the foot.

@@taku_kumabe Appreciate your info. I found the Smallrig plate before your response which apparently I already owned in my "bag of quick release plates". Tested it on my 180-600mm lens foot and like the 2 mounting screws (3/8"-16 and 1/4"-20). I will be getting the Kirk plate with its anti-twist lip feature as I'm primarily looking for the QD socket that I need for my Blackrapid strap.

I also have this lens and was previously using the 70-200mm with the tc2.0. Do you find that there is a settling period before taking images? I walk around with it attached to my cotton carrier and find that when I pull it off and put it up to shoot that it seems to bounce then settle in after a few seconds.

Are you referring to the settling of the VR of the sensor? That locks into place upon sleep or power off (if enabled), so it does need to settle with a “clunk” sound. It should happen for any lens though. Otherwise I don’t see any other delay.

@taku_kumabe I didn't notice it in my 70-200mm and can't remember if it happened with the 200-500mm but yes as I look through the viewfinder the image I see is bouncing yet I know my hand isn't moving. I tried turning the camera off between shots and that seems to make it less "bouncy". I think you're right prob has to do with the VR.

Great video, was wondering, in your opinion. For someone who currently is shooting with a Z7ii with a 200-500 on FTZ, what would be a better use of cash to upgrade? - Sell the Z7ii to buy a Z8 - Sell the 200-500 to buy this 180-600 Both would cost about the same and I only have budget for one of the options. My main frustration is that my current setup's autofocus is not very reliable, especially when photographing small birds in low light. (golden hour)

Sorry for the late reply, but I would sell the Z 7ii and buy the Z 8. The difference between the bodies is too great to be ignored. I normally would say get the lens since that's more of an investment as you do not replace that as often as you might a body, but in this case the new body will do you better even with the 200-500 and FTZ adaptor.

@@taku_kumabe Thanks for thart, and yeah it was the conclusion I reached. Unfortunately selling it has proved to be harder than I expected, after about 10 days I haven't had a single person show interest and feel my price is pretty competitive.

That is more than likely a typo! Thanks for spotting it. That should have been 600mm, f/7.1.

Also, this lens would require a different bag. what do you use? No way is this lens fitting in a shimoda action X30 unfortunately

I still use the GuraGear 30L (first generation without the laptop sleeve). It fits fine in that one (as does the 800mm f/6.3).

Thanks for sharing images.. Regarding collor, i hang lens in belt so not much issue for me .I rented the lens and used with my z8 ..i am feeling sharpness is bit low and video focusing flying birds not proper. i put some sample images and video in RU-vid shorts

I wouldn't call twisting for 4 seconds to be "a very long time!" As for your slide show I would have preferred you taking selfies with this lens. Overall, thumbs down.
