Carissa, Iwan, Frankie & Albi
Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.
Subscribe to follow our project as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own wineirt

instead of pulling them out you can chop leeks & sprouting onions off at the base & they will continue growing. That way you can get a second & maybe a 3rd crop. Plus you can let them go to seed.
@FrankieOffGrid

Ooh cool. Will give that a try! Thanks!

But then you would only get the dark green of the leeks - the white part is where the sweetness lies.

When we lived in Zimbabwe I used to grow leeks and a friend told me to put the loo roll tube around the base of them while they were young to ‘blanch’ them further up the stalk. It worked every time…and the white of every leek was about 4 to 6 inches when harvested. 🥰 though you might be interested x x

With the summers getting so hot shade at the front of the house is really needed. Will the shade cloth give you enough shade? The garden is always a learning experience. I planted beets, but they did nothing so i dug them out and planted ever bearing strawberries. I planted purple majesty potatoes and they are actually growing. My tomatoes are holding their own. The bell peppers bit the dust because of some cold nights, even though they were covered. I will start seeds earlier next year. The problem that i had was potting soil was not in stores before mid March, and it was stored outside so alot of it was frozen. I will now keep some bags of soil in the basement so i can get an early start. 🙂👍👍👍🇨🇦

Your hay cut before it sets seed will be good for mulch, but another option is to HOT compost it which will kill seeds, but provide the organic matter you need to build your soil structure or put in chook yard for them to eat seed first. The new strimmer will make it easier to manage use of the hay resource and i love how many options and closed circle systems you are building. Happy to see your panels up on the pergola now 😊 the rain clears dust off everything and it looks so glorious. If you are visiting chickens each day and the veg garden is close to them and water its a good plan. Put the chicken bedding into compost pile between their home and the veg patch so you can use it all together.

Iwan there are some amazing places to climb about an hour and a bits drive away closer to Coimbra. Clarissa working in the local cafe is an awesome way of learning Portuguese- especially picking up the local dialect and accent and great to see the new toy Iwan has got, it is awesome! As much as 3 weeks of rain is welcome - having cleared all the land for the deadline there is going to a whole new lot of clearing to do again, well worth it for the lush greenery but yet again more graft. I may have a solution to your climbing wall and will report back to you after I have seen how my TV cabinet fairs but you may well be able to have it outdoors without a roof.
@FrankieOffGrid
@FrankieOffGrid Год назад
Ah really? I’ll have to have a look. There’s some good bits up on the Serra da Estrella too - and of course Sintra. I’m really hoping I’m not going to have another two weeks of strimming to do after all this rain 😅

Dia da espiga is a weird tradition. I lived over 40 years in that region of rural Portugal and i didn't even know it existed. The first time i ever heard about it was around 4 years ago. The funny part, when I talked about it with a group of friends some were like me and the others knew all about it. And we all went to school together.

Good evening lovelies. That was a generous gift and i hope karma treats your benefactor well. Frankie is just so clever. That picture of him at the end of his work where he was properly grining was so great. Does Frankie struggle with the heat due to being long haired?. Dia de espiga sounds really nice. I like the sybolisms. Your bouquet looks so authentic and i hope it brings you all the blessings. Moving the garden sounds like a good idea and hopefully it won't need moving again. I do have a question though. If that is where the water runs in winter, will it damage the garden? I bet you felt lime dancing in that rain. I love the smell of the earth after agood rain after it has been dry. Another beautiful with stunning nature and animal shots. Thank you very much.x

Thanks, what a great video! You guys have really done so well! I have been busy so not tuned in as much I did at the start - probably binge watch a bit when I am off over Christmas break but I wanted to ask - are you still sleeping in your wooden cabin? Because I was just wondering why you didn't turn the room you draw in as bedroom or is it too small? Do you have plans to build a bedroom on? Sorry for all the questions! Also, how did you find your property please? I would like to move to Portugal from London as well - not necessarily farm because I am getting on in years but possibly something like a large rural plot with a house so I can have a few fruit trees and a veggie garden and some chickens! The best thing, to enjoy the heat and sunshine - those blue skies for so many days of the year really appeal. Oh and lol, I spotted some South African baking powder there in your kitchen!!! (Royal)

We’d planned to get the roof on before summer but life somewhat got in the way of that.. we’ll definitely be starting it soon and hoping to be in it by Christmas.

What I have observed in many of your videos and others that people spend so much time on water issues, and rather than take the needed time to actually get pipes in place where watering is needed, it gets put off and you end up doing the watering the hard way and carrying it from here to there. What I saying is there is no sense in having a garden or tree planted that you can not support with water in a small effort with pipes and expand as you can organize the infrastructure first.

Is it a concern that your pets accidently fall into the open wells with what seems like no way out.

It was to begin with.. we actually spent some time ‘teaching/showing’ them, the dogs both voluntarily jumped in when they were at their fullest and both immediately regretted it. We’re saving some money to build taller walls around them and we’ll properly cover one of them.
