Been running a Unifi setup for years, I just keep upgrading as needed. It's been fantastic. The only issues I've ever had were caused by myself and not the hardware or software. i.e. making changes that were not understood or needed.

Hey great upload. Im from Australia, we are in lockdown, and what a great time to upgrade the network. I ran CAT6 threw out the whole house and spent nearly the whole day in the roof, that was painful. I also put together a home network rack all loaded with Ubiquiti UniFi Gen2 24 Port POE Switch and the Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro Enterprise Security Gateway w/10G SFP+ and a Ubiquiti UniFi 6 Lite WiFi 6 Access Point, what a difference it has made. Myfirst set-up was very similar to yours stock NBN modem with a netgear modem/router mixed with a netgear switch. So glad i did it. I also invested in a 24TB NAS for the whole family. And yes, i spent countless days staring at the unifi dashboard, you do get over that after a while. SUBBED/LIKED/THUMBS-UP.

Great run down, I run an IT consulting company and we use a lot of Ubiquiti gear. Their protect platform is great for a lot of my clients who have made the switch from Hikvision, Amcrest, Reolink etc. Those other camera platforms are great but for a lot of small business owners they seem to prefer how the protect app functions. Aside from Unifi, Ubiquiti's airMAX line is also fantastic. We use it a lot for point to point shots to link up remote buildings. U6 Lites and U6 LR are both great, down the road I'm hoping they release a UAP-AC-IW 6 version, it's a clean form factor and easy to retrofit existing drops with.

We are in the middle of building a crypto mine. 3 immersion tanks, 18 miners. We have been using Ubiquity for years and years and for a small business setup it is outstanding. Rarely if ever goes down, wifi is flawless. We are building our mine on a 10gb backbone. 10gb from each tank into the aggregator. into a 8x2 SFP switch and off to the internet. I do love this Ubiquiti hardware. Very reliable and cost effective. I will be able to see all the data coming out of the entire mine right down to the port level on each miner on each switch on each tank. Epic.

Very informative, thank you Samir! I'm considering putting a Unifi setup in my home. What's your experience with signal strength on the 2nd floor from those ceiling mounted AP's? I have a standard 2 story stick framed house in the northeastern US with 8 ft ceilings, sheetrock ceilings and hardwood floors. Do you think one AP one the ceiling of the lower floor would provide enough signal for a similar sized area upstairs or am I better off by placing AP's on both levels?
@TechTalkwithSamir
@TechTalkwithSamir 2 года назад
Thanks for checking out the video. It will depend on your home’s layout. If you have open areas looking down from your second floor, you’ll have a lot better mileage than if you have limited open areas. In my house, we get quite a bit of coverage from our second floor AP, but it will depend on each house. In fact for some houses you may need multiple APs within the same floor due to the layout.

I have recently been looking to upgrade my home network aswell. I think i will either go with the new UDR that ubiquiti recently announced for EA soon or a UDM-Pro-SE I'm a little bit concerned with the IPS throughput of the UDR since i expect it to be just like the UDM which is about 850mbps, which is ofc great... just not if you have 1000/1000 fiber.. And then I'm not a 100% sure about the fan in the UDM/UDR since i've heard they can be pretty noisy... at least with the UDM-Pro-SE you can upgrade them to a set of noctua fans if they become noisy. Besides that i will probably go with a USW-Lite-8-POE switch and 1-2 of the new Wifi 6 AP Pros when they come out of early access aswell(depending on if i go with the new UDR with wifi 6 or go for the UDM-pro-se without wifi)
@TechTalkwithSamir
@TechTalkwithSamir 3 года назад
Yes the UDR’s announcement definitely makes things interesting. Although if your network gear is going sit in a closet rather than at a common place, the UDR’s built in AP may go to waste. I personally would lean towards the UDM Pro SE simply because of the fact that you likely won’t even have to think of another upgrade for years so might as well get the most throughput possible in case you do get gigabit fiber down the road and want to have IPS enabled.
@JohnFromTheInternet.
@JohnFromTheInternet. 3 года назад
@@TechTalkwithSamir I mean i would have the UDR in a common place where i could utilize the AP in it. But then again as you said, the UDM pro SE would most likely be pretty future proof for the next 5-10+ years with IPS enabled. UDM Pro SE also has better options for Unifi protect aswell. Eventhough they have added that option to the UDR... just not convinced it is enough with 128GB ssd and microSD cards

I've been researching the same for home. I need to also be future proofed. So the ability to have up to 10Gbit WAN, at least three 10Gbit PoE ports to go to WiFi 6 (hopefully 6E soon) APs, another 10Gbit for Synology NAS, and a last 10Gbit to run to a 24 port, 1GB switch. The thing people are missing. VPN or firewall traffic shaping past 1GB requires a lot of CPU power. Most devices are not ready for that. People also forget about backhaul to WiFi 6APs. Who cares if you get a 6Gbit WiFi signal if your backhaul is only 1Gbit. And finally, I'd like to get it all being affordable and with the same vendor for management tools. This is a huge ask I know, but this is what it will take for serious home networks for professionals working from home.

I recently upgraded from the USG to the UDM Pro SE, I couldn't get the speed that I was offered by my ISP because the USG was the bottleneck, I'm happy with my investment to the Pro SE as it will future proof any network speed upgrades from my ISP AND still running IDS/IPS without even more bandwidth bottlenecks, I since decided to slowly start upgrading my cabling to minimum Cat6 and looking to get the XG 16 which has 4 10GB RJ45 and 12 SFP+ as I bought 2 dual 10GB RJ45 cards, it is a bit overkill for me at the moment but this should last at least the next 5 and more years and future proof any expansion needs I have. The USG still is a great little Gateway device but unfortunately due to it's capabilities "outdated". Tricky part might be the Pro SE only supports one site so if someone has multiple sites it will not work with that, I only use it for 1 site and succesfully restored the backup from my hosted controller so far I haven't come across issues except my VPN setup but vlan and all seems to work fine from the backup and the networks/wifi settings.

"Hello everyone. I'm Phil and I'm an addict" I've been in the Unifi ecosystem since early 2017. It's awesome but man it's like a narcotic.... I started with the USG, a first generation cloud key, a US-8-150W and 2 x UAP-AC-PROs. That little setup was my gateway drug and after moving to a house with solid concrete walls and adding more and more IoT devices...my network expanded. "Oh please god forgive me...I was just a middle aged man who wanted perfect network client connectivity...." and I got it ;). I built an 8 RU 'RAST rack', installed a 16 port patch panel, moved to a USG-4, a cloud key gen2 plus and a USW-24-500W. Then I began adding edge switches, additional access points and Unifi cameras through the cloud key gen2+. I even went so far as to create a wirelessly bridged camera outpost in my garden using a US-5-FLEX, two cameras and an older access point. It was all worth it. I have no regrets...only that I didn't do it sooner.

I would like to add something to your "do you need 10G port(s)?". Not only look at the need right now, also look at the (near) future. If you're in the market for a new switch, it is a good idea to think about a 10G version nowadays. You might not need it today, however, you buy a switch for 5, 10, maybe even 15 years. Especially if you just want a decent one. I would surely look into multiple 10G ports with POE. As POE also might be something that will be used more often in the (near) future.
@TechTalkwithSamir

Yes I can see 10 Gbe a lot more relevant in the future. But unfortunately you also pay an early adoption premium. Also the existing cabling for most people may not be sufficient. I do however see 2.5G becoming mainstream over the next 10 years.

Great question. It will depend on whether you intend to go with 10 gigabit networking at any point. CAT6 is rated for 10gbps for much shorter distances than CAT7. Even if you do plan on going with 10 gigabit, I would look into CAT6A rather than CAT7. If you don’t ever plan on doing 10gbps networking, just go with CAT6.

It all depends on the specific needs of each person. But even in most extreme cases, I think it’s an overkill to go 10Gb capable cabling for all devices. You must not have the threat management/prevention turned on your USG. I am looking to upgrade my USG because I have the full threat prevention package turned on and with that you can only get about 110-120Mbit through the USG, which is better than the 85Mpbs it's rated for with threat prevention turned on, but it's still not enough for my needs. When I've got mutiple TVs running 4K streaming along with both my wife and I working and all the phones, tablets and smart tech in the house, the Internet can lag. Not bad lag, but sometimes I'll be on a conference call and the people will tell me I'm dropping out or sound like a chipmunk. This is even with my work PC plugged into Ethernet. My setup is 2x UAC-AP-Pro, US-8-60W PoE switch, USG-3P, CloudKey Gen2. Running the latest controller software 7.x, 6.x firmware on the switch and APs, and the latest available on the USG (4.4.53 I think). I'd like to upgrade to the Unifi Dream Router which is in EA now and sold out on the page, but they're only asking $79 for it and it has 2 PoE. I signed up for the wait list/restock list. This would replace the USG and the Cloud Key. I'll still need my little switch because I have 7/8 ports populated currently, but if some other person out there was only running their APs off the switch they could potentially replace that too with the UDR. I have no need for 10G at home because I store all my photos in the cloud. I don't know what the threat prevention throughput is on the UDR but as long as it's in the 300-400 Mbps range that will be fine. The UDM threat prevention throughput is 850Mbps but that device costs $299. In a small house or apartment the UDR would probably be all you needed because it has WiFi 6 built in. I will keep my APs even if I get the UDR because I have a large 1 story house, and as noted I have 7 ethernet drops in usage so I need an external switch regardless. Note that, in order to see the UDR you have to sign in and be authorized for Early Access.

Going to 10GbE, did you notice a major difference when grabbing data from the Synology? Which Synology DS did you get? Did you aggregate the link to give higher speed? My Synology is only 2Gb when aggregated. I am considering upgrading to 2.5GbE because I am not sure the 10GbE is going to help. I recently updated my AP's now and I went with the U6-Pro's. Not sure they were available at the time this video was released. In hindsight, very few devices take advantage of WiFi 6 and even less take advantage of 4x4 MIMO and I probably would save the money, albeit small amount, and get the U6-Lite or even the older AC versions and there would be very little difference. You are right that the USG will not handle GbE WAN, the USG-Pro is barely able to do Gb WAN. I still use a USG-Pro I got second hand because I can't justify a Dream Machine for home use and there is currently no replacement for the old USG. Not sure how viable GbE WAN is, even now in 2022. I can only see Gb WAN useful if you are using a lot of data in the cloud, rather than local on NAS, so the USG Pro may do me for quite a while yet.
@TechTalkwithSamir
@TechTalkwithSamir 2 года назад
Great questions. I actually have a video coming out tomorrow talking about some further 10gig upgrades I did recently. My synology is the DS1618+. I had to add a separate 10Gb Nic to get it to 10gbe. Initially I had 4 aggregated links. But the problem with that is that it can still only serve 1gbe to a specific device. It can serve up to 4 devices at 1gbe simultaneously with the 4 aggregated links but it doesn’t serve 4Gbe to any one specific device (hope that makes sense). After I upgraded to 10 gig from end to end, I now have 10 gig connection between my desktop and my synology. So when I’m importing photos in Lightroom from my CFExpress card, it’s Atleast 4-5 times faster. It’s not quite 10x because my synology hard drives are bottlenecks but still night and day difference. Now if you don’t work with bulk data like I do, it probably won’t make a difference but for me, it’s basically like working off of a SATA ssd but over the network. Now 2.5GbE is definitely a good balance. Lot less expensive and can use your existing cabling. And it’s still more than double the speed of gigabit. I think for most people 2.5G might be the best upgrade from 1Gig. Thanks for checking out the video!

Unifi is great however Ubiquiti has already made changes to some of their icosystem that was just plain greedy. Specifically the change they made to Unifi video. They migraded to unifi protect forcing the rest of us to do the same while many consumers were left hanging with devices that no longer work. Based on that I would not be surprised if they do the same thing to the rest of their devices. They always claimed in the past that their devices are "democratic" meaning no license fees for their controllers setting them apart from cisco however as like many businesses that grow into massive corporations its obvious that it's only a matter of time before the take away all the cool things about their devices and locking everything down. Pretty soon they will start charging for the use of the controller or remove it as a downloadable option all together. The unifi pro SE is a perfect example of this. They released the unifi dream machine which was great for a simple home setup however when they released the unifi UDM pro it was a sham. Half the casing is empty and no POE only to release the SE 2 years later. If this is not greed I dont know what is. I would proceed with caution cause Ubiquiti is turning into another Elon Musk. Great start but just crazy greedy afterwards.

The speaker really isn't loud enough (its tiny, so not surprising), and there is currently no scheduling around door notifications. You cant turn off the ringer/doorbell based on a schedule, nor any of the notifications for detection activity.

Good to know. I’ll look into it and potentially review it in the future.

Your claim that the usg can’t handle gigabit speed is not true. I’m using fiber at 1 gigabit and it is very able. Please check your facts before spreading misinformation. Bad Apple!!

Turn on the IDP/IDS and see if you still get those gigabit speeds.....

Yes I meant having Intrusion prevention turned on. There’s a clear warning on the controller that turning on threat management will limit the USGs throughput to 85Mbps. If you are running without any of these features on, then like you said, no issues with gigabit fiber. But if you want to enable some of these advanced features, the USG is underpowered.

Watching his videos make me sick. Why the constant zoom in/out. That's bad camera work or editing one of the two.

As an IT consultant that primarily deals with Cisco, Sonicwall, Fortinet, and even Araknis, I love the UniFi software, but absolutely hate the range on the APs, specially the older UAP Pro, and even the new HD and NanoHD. Horrible, horrible range compared to other offerings (Cisco ME and Aironet, FortiAP, etc.)

Looks like what you need is a rack for your equipment.

Lol. Rack would be good but serves the same purpose as my bookshelf with higher cost 😜

@@TechTalkwithSamir Actually a rack will serve more purpose then that since you can install a cooling system with just temp controlled fans to help keep the gear cooler and actually take up less space since you wont have the cables all over the place. I thought the same thing for the 3 years that i have lived in my house. I had my router up on a shelf. Had to be careful not putting stuff on top of it since it was a closet shelf. Then anytime I needed to get access to it to make any changes yup a pain. So instead I moved into a rack instead and love the fact Still in a closet just a different one now in master bedroom where I relocated myself. Only other thing to do different is get the roll of Velcro that you cut to the length you need add extra length, use instead of zip ties for 2 reasons. 1 if people are not careful you can over tighten a zip tie and damage your wires. 2 if you have a cable go bad or you need to add cables or upgrade to support higher 10G or better, you just undo the Velcro and redo after cable mods no cutting then having to replace zip ties. I watched videos where you do a bunch all together then you can slide then back and forth into place. I found that really helpful for those hard to reach and wrap up locations.

Not sure why you think your synology or anything else you have needs 10g. . . .I have 8 synology storage NAS units and video cameras all over this place like fort knox. 1gb networking is rocking it all with plenty to spare. In a few talks will run talk. In a week or two I setup access for someone else. The kit is very solid for the price. Now. . .with that said. . . get a rack you cheap skate and protect that gear and show it some love!

I like my bookshelf. Does the same thing as a rack, holds my equipment.
