TWSBI ECO v. LANBITOU 3059: Is it Really a Clone?

On our cold steel table today we have a pair of identi-pens: The TWSBI ECO and the Lanbitou 3059. A Knock-Off and the Genuine Article. Or at first glance you might well call them that. But what about second? And third? Well this is exactly why we need a good ole Fountain Pen Comparison Review!
As usual, we've wheeled out the PandaPenClub electron microscope and subjected these pens to a fierce beam of sustained and intrusive scrutiny. An instructive dissection followed. And thereafter a period of tempestuous navel-gazing. Rest assured the process was completed with our usual combination of passion, exactitude, and highly advanced technology.
Now at last we answer the question, so often asked about this pair of fountain pens: Is it possible to come up with a list of differences, distinctions, dichotomies and divisions that is at once cast-iron definitive and awash with the ambrosial motherly comfort?

Excellent review. Reviewers are often critical about the Lanbitou's section. How uncomfortable did you find it?

Thanks very much, Dominic! The section wasn’t distractingly uncomfortable for me. If someone was alright with the LAMY Safari I’d think they’d be alright with this.

Not going to lie, Andy, I like your style. I subscribed after my very first PandaPenClub video. Love the accent and your sense of humor. You had me in stitches again today, with your "like a garden pond" comment. Looking forward to watching more PPC videos!

Well, I got my Lambitous (plural, yes, couldn't decide on the colour) in the mail last Friday and I've been putting them through the proverbial wringer. Colour me impressed. They're surprisingly smooth writers, especially given the fine nib. Obviously, I can't compare them with the real TWSBI Eco because, although I have no qualms with forking over half a month's salary for a 90-year old fountain pen, I balk at the idea of spending 35€ on a plastic pen. These cheap knock-offs will do me just fine though.

Thanks, Andy! Happy to see your vids more often. I have a TWSBI Eco, like it a lot. It writes well on all types of paper. I ordered a Penbbs 494 and the pen that arrived looked a lot like the Lanbitou, but was not. Neither was it a Penbbs 494, nor a Wing Sung 3008 which resembles the Lanbitou. I came to learn that it is likely a Cobee piston filler. Had never heard of Cobee but I own one evidently. It writes really well, no complaints, and cost was similar to the 3059. The Eco is clearly a better pen, but the Cobee easily delivers more than $4 worth of performance.

Thanks, David! I’ve looked into the Cobee - can only see on AliExpress so far so might take a while to a get hold of one, but I’m interested in trying it! -Andy.

I have 2 TWSBI Ecos and there is no pleasure in writing with either one, I have several Lanbitou 3059s, all are lovely to write with... I'd choose the 3059 every time myself

My experience with the F nib like yours is wonderful. I love my eco F, but I adore the F nib on my Lanbitou, and I also have an M nib that works well. Lanbitou also had an interesting fine , demonstrator hooded nib with the same body as this Lambitou. It wrote lovely, though I did lend it to someone and they broke it.

Hi, good work...I reckon you need your own show. Something all expensive and haunting and dramatic on netflix about fountain pens. Anyway...a request, if I may? I bought a Namisu Ixion (very pleased with it) recently and I put some Parker Quink ink into it. I expected more of it...it's all pale and ill looking. So I wondered if you might consider a review...of inks? What would you recommend putting into my new pen?!

Hello there! We've actually been planning to do a video involving inks, but at the moment we just don't have a lot of inks to work with. Ink can also be very subjective and nib/pen dependent. Quink Blue Black is an ink I've enjoyed, but it can be underwhelming in certain pens. For now, I can perhaps tell you a few inks/brands I return to over and over. I rather like Pilot Iroshizuku inks, especially kon-peki. Diamine inks are very accessible price-wise and have great pigment and shading. Majestic Blue, Oxford Blue, Earl Grey, Ancient Copper, Oxblood, Aurora Borealis are all great. Robert Oster makes gorgeous inks. So does Monteverde (esp. California Teal). Hope that's helpful!
