Monie grew up in south London and was one of the first English rappers to make a name for herself in America during the late 80s/early 90s, following a collaboration with Queen Latifah.
Overground Online sent revolutionary rapper Ty to have a no-holds-barred chat with the veteran emcee, who he says inspired him and a generation of hip-hop artists in the UK.
Watch Monie break down the history of British hip-hop in her dressing room at The Forum, Kentish Town.

Excuse me? Popping and Locking started in the United States not the UK. It started before Monie Love was born.

She's not saying that they were doing that in the UK first she means the hip-hop scene over there in the Uk had more break dancers at first who began to do more within the culture.

She means before making the music; rapping, deejaying.

That's not what she meant. "We were body popping and locking first" meaning that the UK heads were doing that before the DJing and the emceeing. The B-Boying was the first part of the culture that took hold in the UK.
