Davie. Great looking fly! I'm amazed that when it looks like there's no more room for material left at the head, you are able to attach a clump of deer hair and make it look simple and natural looking. Incredible skills you have Sir!

Thanks Davie a lovely tying. I walked under Hyndford Bridge on the Clyde a month ago and the Gadger shucks on the walls were in abundance hence my looking for a fly. I have fished the gadger up there for 60+ years with float and size 18 hooks with great success but now I'll try to tie some for the fly line next season. Cheers, Big Davie.

Here in Alberta, Canada our fishing season is drawing to a close so it’s time to re-stock the fly box. Your patterns will be on my to do list this winter when it’s -30.

I really like this pattern Davie. I think I'm going to tie a bunch this year. I believe in your bugs, and this pattern is going to bring me back around to dries again. Thank you for this great pattern.

I'm so far south another yard and I'd be in the sea. No gadgers here. But I'm going to tie one of these monsters in the hope that someone spots it in my box. A lockdown fly to wow onlookers.

Hi MrLSwanson, I have attached a link to the size 8 hook that I would use to tye this style of fly as I like one with a short shank but with wide gape though if you can't find this one then just use what you have as it will still work fine..I'm glad you liked the fly.. hi davie ,, brilliant if i could do the gadger like that i would be scared to use it encase i lost it ,,i use to spend hours on the Clyde catching them then trying to keep them in a tin ,,then trying to put them on a hook ,,this looks deadly wish i could have tried them 30 years back ,,lol

Great dressing Davie . Threw us Americans a little Bone there with this one. Thanks a lot. Quick question however. For dressing the "salmon fly " version, besides the color of the foam , and mono eyes, is it the same material list as the one you tied here? Warm regards from Italy, Colbee

On the stonefly, when you made the body, you left a very long tag on the thread but I missed why you did that? Seems to me you cut it off when you attached the body to the hook. Very nice fly - would float forever. Off to the bench. Thanks
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi Bob Fowler, I leave them on so that I can tye them on to the shank of the hook as they hold the foam body together as you said...As I said I rarely tye Stoneflies so I'm glad you liked it... All the very best Davie

Hi Davie. Since this is a dry fly why did you add the crystal flash on top of the fly?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi mlevesque33, It should reflect the light a wee bit and as well they will sit at times in the surface film rather than high on top. I'm not a great fan though of too much flash in a wing as I've cut it off other patterns many times and found the fly to work better... All the very best Davie
