Like the idea of using the "waste " of the CDC. And the explanation of the usefulness of the "waste". As I fish both gentle and more robust flows (same river). I appreciate the subtle distinction you provided with this fly. Thanks

Brilliant! Nothing less. And despite its simplicity a candidate for World's Best Trout Fly. My slight modification..... For anyone averse to using foam a 5th CDC feather can be used to tie forward, splitting the wings. If that 5th feather is installed as a bubble loop it holds a lot of air, increasing the buoyancy of the fly. I flatten the stem of that 5th feather on my tying desk to encourage it to roll into a loop without kinking.

I tied up three of these as an emergency measure on holiday a couple of weeks ago. I had no foam with me so just used a small bunch of pheasant tail fibres instead, which seem to work fine. I then tried them on a small stretch of the Afon Banwy (tributary of the Vyrnwy) after thirty minutes of nothing with other (usually successful) patterns. I promptly had eight takes in as many minutes from the local grayling and at least one missed trout. Absolute beauty of a fly.

Hi Davie, First, I wish you a very happy new year, full of fish and flies as beautiful as you tie them. When tying same flies, I use floss in place of the foam. I like the idea, this will help to keep the fly in the film! very clever tip Thank you very much for all these videos Best regards Nic

The CDC dries are great. How do you maintain the CDC wing when a fish slimes it? They seem very difficult to get the fly to float again...

Davie i'd like to say thanks for all the great fly patterns you have showed and continue to show us . in one of your videos i notice that you used a bobbin with a small silicone tube to hold back you hackle while you finish your fly. I just wanted to suggest something i use which is a drinking straw they vary in size and are basically free once im tied off i just cut the straw off and done . thanks for the great demos

@@DavieMcPhail Hi Davie - yes, that’s the pattern I was looking for! Thank you very much. One more question, do you like this pattern and wing style over the pattern where you split the wings with a small strip of foam? Very similar, but wondering which is more effective. Thanks once again!

Hi Philip, I do prefer bringing the CDC feathers between the wing as it lasts far longer though I have caught a few fish on the one with the foam so they are worth having some in your box.. All the very best Davie

Davie . . . I love your videos! I'm learning so much from these! Thank you for doing these! A question for you . . . How do you handle your wax? You seem to keep it in your hand all the time and is very convenient for your use. I have a tube of wax and the wax just seems too sticky. Not a good solution. So help!!! Thanks again!!!
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 8 лет назад
Hi Frank Lilley, I use Prepared Fly Tyers Wax from a wholesale company called Veriards...I hold it under the warm water tap until it's soft enough to pull off a small piece the size and thickness of a small button and as you see in the video I stick it to the side of my finger. The way I do this is to work the small piece between my fingers until it become tacky enough for it to stick to the side of my finger..Here is Veniards stockists list for you to find a shop to buy their wax... www.veniard.com/stockists.asp All the very best Davie

Hi Davie. Thank you for the excellent tying videos, I have learned so much from them. Masterful technique and beautiful flies. A question about materials, specifically CDC. Can you suggest a source of high quality? I have bought some in the US and found they are quite variable in size. I would prefer longer feathers as very small ones can be difficult to use except on very small hook sizes. Thanks, Brian

HI Davie! As usual, excellent pattern that I will use very soon, once the snow will be away from our Austrian mountains ;-) : about the foam. can you use a lighter coulour such as skin colour or even white in order to better see the fly on "rough waters? Thanks and "Petri"!

This is a beautiful pattern, natural looking and will work (float and not twist in casting) well, but I find it is difficult (for us amateurs) to tie. Do you rate for difficulty Davie? I see AJ Mcintyre is having problems too!

Lovely pattern, and great video as always. Comparing this to the Red & Grey hackled dun, these patterns must work quite the same way? Are there any big differences in the way they act/float? Which one do you prefer (for fishing)? Cheers, Håkon

Davie, Would you mind explaining the purpose of waxing the thread in this pattern?
@DavieMcPhail
@DavieMcPhail 3 года назад
Hi ThatIntoThis, Waxing your thread will help give you more grip as well as make your thread stronger, it also helps you reduce the number of turns making a better and neater fly..I especially like to use the wax when tying on hackles and wings... All the very best Davie

Hi Jason Pereira, To be honest I've never had any issues using the CDC offcuts but if you feel that the fish you are targeting are a bit shy then use the normal flies tyed with the finer tips of the Cdc...I'm glad you liked the fly and I'm sure if tye some you'll not go wrong... I know I am doing something wrong because the top hook of the whip finishing tool always ends up really close to my hook. Yours never does. Any suggestions. I have only been tying about a month and I tied on a 14 size hook last night I did watch repair though so I am not surprised i'm better with tiny
