Brill davie lovely pattern Deer hair is so versatile . I rem at a tying class yrs ago the tutor tied a dry fly with only deer hair . It was called the poor mans mayfly lol a fun pattern ,v easy to tie and super bouyant. Would like to experiment abit more with deer hair as a hackle.
That's a great buggy looking fly. I like the way you make the deer hair mix into an Adams style "hackle/wing". I'll have to try and tie a few using your technique. Thanks for another fine video, Dave.
Hi Davie, I do take may hat off to you in admirtation of both the time and effort your put into making these videos available to us and the quality of flies you show. I was first shown how to try flies nearly 30 years ago and im still trying, however i remember when i started i was told to get a phesant skin, tail, some seals fur and tread and within reason there was alot of traditional Irish patterns the could be tied from these basic materials to see you throughout the season, I feel at times with alot of flies that you show i am forever without the materials you use and i look towards subsitutes i may have that may be suitable. I have purchased matrerials from Glasgow Angling monthly for over a year now and probably spent over £1,400 on fly tying material alone. I wounder where does it end, I love tying flies and trying out new patterns!; nothing bettern than the satisfaction of catching fish on your own flies and to try some fariations of flies you have, I suppose the question is! considering i know some people that have fished many many years yet only have perhaps 12 patterns in there box for an entire season for both lakes and rivers yet will always turn fish, is there really any point in having several boxes with 200 - 300 patterns? I honestly know myself that some of the old faithful pattern work season after season or is there really a necessity to such a variation in materials that month after month i top up on materials i dont have?
Hi Aidan, I'm like yourself I too have a fair pile of tying materials but I tye flies to suit many waters for here and other countries. But like you said you can have a good dozen patterns tyed in a few sizes that will get you by especially on your local waters..I say the same thing to myself every time I buy more materials, do I really need them, but I do enjoy tying as much as fishing.. ***** I appreciate the responses, i love my fly tying too and especially trying out new patterns. i always try to keep the pattern as close to the original as possible then perhaps try some variations. i suppose its when you use materials that are simular one asks is it better or will a subsitute be fine, i suppose one always looks towards how does the pattern look in the water or when they fly is wet. i sometimes find myself putting my fly's into a glass of water just to see the colours change. anyway thank you for your responses and i suppose ill always be topping up my materials and fly collection. P.S. would love to see some more tips in dying feathers and the likes, sometimes its hard to get the correct colours and different waters suit differnt tints of olive, capes are expensive at the best of time so would like some tips on dying capes please!! best wishes and tight lines Aidan...
Great job all was missing was the grizzly feather tips for wings, they are my secret weapon for trout fishing I don't use a fly rod I use a open face with a special weight and a female adam and I can get any trout when I show up even if guys been fishing areas for hours. love them rainbow trout in black hills of South Dakota
Davie if you’ve never used a Missing Link Caddis I would HIGHLY recommend it!! Amazing pattern and very very buggy looking. And it’s one of my favorites to tie as well. Hope you’re doing well!!
Awesome video Davie! For Sure it will work in our home waters in America. I have been trying the technique you use to cut the hair...and guess what? I can't make it work!
Simply amazing! I've tried to imitate your technic but ..no avail.Why when I pinch and ty the deer hair and everything seems ok ,only the weight of the bobbin make the fly turnaround the hook flank? Too much hair, type of grease ??Pls, show me the trick. However you are really a "maestro" ,thank for your videos from Italy.
Hi Nico Bambini, The first thing I would do is lightly wax your thread as this will give you more grip so that's there is less chance of it slipping. I also watch the amount of deer hair I am tying in because if you use too much it will spin round the shank just as you described...The wax I use is call Prepared Fly Tyers wax by Veniards... Hey Davie, Great tie, I will have to try some. I am not sure I have the lighter hair, maybe in elk. I don't suppose it matters as long as it is fine and floating. Crackin wee fly. :) All the best to you and yours. Sean ( can't help but wonder who thinks they are so great a tier that they can put a thumbs down on one of your patterns but there are always a few. Who knows??? Anonymity makes people do things they wouldn't normally have the guts to do.)
Davie, is that an extra long shank hook? My 16s don't have enough length to put all that material on. Thanks. I really enjoy your videos. Keep them coming.
Hi Marv Meng, It's a nymph/dry hook which is slightly longer in the shank but not much, what would be worth doing is to use yellow thread to get the egg sack instead of the yellow dubbing which will help with space and materials..I'm glad you enjoy the videos and I'll keep them coming when I get the free time...
