I had wanted to get into fly fishing for a long time. About two years ago I was gifted a bunch of tools and supplies for tying. I bought a rod and reel and hit the lake last spring and became hooked after the first catch. I just came across your videos and subscribed. I really like the way you are delivering the information along with telling stories. Keep up the great work!

@@SavageFlies I guess it’s more satisfying……or encouraging to know that the fly we copy from you can catch fish, rather than fishermen!!! I spent way too much time copying Instagram flies, that cost more than they’re worth in materials, only to get zeroed every time I’ve used em!!! 😂😂 my buddies think they sure are pretty though!!!

Good morning Matt. Enjoyed watching you tie the dry fly this morning. That was a pretty big clump of calf tail on there but on camera everything looks big especially dubbing. Enjoyed the footage of you fishing with it too. Looks like you had an enjoyable trip. Sun is just coming up here, neighbour just left for a date with a Walleye and I’m getting ready to go pick up my boat at the shop but first my morning ☕️ and of course Tuesday’s video. Take care Matt.
@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
Oh yeah, it was a good week John. One of the nights it got down in the 50s and I had to actually get in my sleeping bag. :-) Regarding that big clump of calftail, it certainly does give the fly some heft. And someone here asked if I've ever tied this with a synthetic material. I don't know why I never have but maybe I should give it a try. I could probably get down to a 16 or even 18 if I used something other than that bulky calftail. Hmmm...

I know Lee! That would have been my second tactic. I seriously thought about tying on a foam hopper with a Prince dropper, which looking back I probably should have to maybe lure some of the bigger fish out of their holes. It was probably the smaller, more reckless guys who come up through two feet of fast water for a dry fly. Maybe next time. :-)

@SavageFlies
@SavageFlies 2 года назад
No kidding Jim! I like water like that for a lot of reasons... and one is you don't have to be too stealthy, and as long as you get a good drift you've got a good chance of fooling at least some of the fish. :-)
@parachutejjs

Summertime in the Smokies. “What should I tie on? Doesn’t matter as long as it’s yellow.” Nice job on this classic. The color/materials combo works great like this, tied parachute style and even trude style. Like you said it floats well in bumpy water and is easy to see. And the wild fish love it. Well done.

Great fly, excellent video!!! I fish the water in southern Colorado like you were fishing for the same reason, no one else is there! I haven't Scott, but really for no reason other than tradition. But I did try to make a few of these in 16s last year and it was hard to get enough calftail on it to be worth the effort. Or if I did, the body ended up being too bulky for a small fly. But now that you mention it... I'll bet I could make the wing/post out of any synthetic and tie them down to 16-18 with no problem. I may have to try that. Thanks for the note!

Hey Matt! I know this is off topic, but I've been watching your vise review videos as I'm looking into purchasing a vise myself. It seems you have almost every vise on the market except one, Renzetti. my question is, why haven't you reviewed Renzetti vises before?

The short answer is because I give away every product after I review it. So picking up a $300+ Renzetti to review and give away would pretty much be all the money the channel makes in a month! I do hope to someday but so far, the Montana Mongoose has been the most expensive vise I could afford to give out.

Beautiful waters! This looks pretty typical as far as speed and difficulty for Front Range streams and rivers. I don't have a camera. However, The Rusted Trout has some great videos along Clear Creek just west of Golden, Colorado. Fishing in October can be great. Most of the tourists have gone. That leaves the rivers open, especially on week days... Also, the water flow is quite low; well past the run off from the previous winter snows. That makes for crystal clear water. Here's one of his videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lEBl8nxP7YA.html

Great comment Stephen! I just watched this video and wow, I'd love to fish Clear Creek some day. That was a beautiful looking gorge. I just subscribed to their channel. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing it with me. Have a great week my friend. :-)

Probably going to invite the wrath of purists with this comment. I've often wondered why more patterns don't use the single wing rather than split wings.

I don't know Jim! I'd kind of like to know the answer to that too. It kind of makes sense to me when you split a wing like mallard flank on a dainty fly, as it's likely to be leaning to one side or the other in the water and with the wings split, at least one of the wings would be visible to the fish. But for a bushy pattern like this, I doubt the wing is visible to the fish at all.
