The Mickey Finn was first tied sometime in the 19th century by Charles Langevin of Québec and originally known there as the "Langevin".
John Alden Knight of NY popularized the fly in the U.S. in 1937 as the "Assassin". In the U.S. it originally had the uninspired name of "Red and Yellow Bucktail". Gregory Clark of the Toronto Star newspaper, renamed it once more, this time the "Mickey Finn" after the famous knockout drink.
An excerpt from Wikipedia:
In The History of Fly Fishing in Fifty Flies (2015), Ian Whitelaw writes:
In 1937 Knight wrote and article about the fly in Hunting and Fishing that fired the popular imagination. Its publication coincided with the Sportsmen’s Show in New York, and it was estimated that as many as a half a million Mickey Finns were tied and sold during the show. The manufacturers, the Weber Lifelike Fly Company of Wisconsin, who had advertised the fly in the same magazine, were overwhelmed by orders for Mickey Finns from across the country.
- Ian Whitelaw (2015)
This fly was taken from the book "A Compendium of Canadian Fly Patterns" by Robert H. Jones and Paul C. Marriner, Gale's End Press, Fly Fishing Canada Publications, 2006.

Mine as well. All of the fish shown in the background of the video were caught on Mickey Finns. In fact you can see the fly in one shot, still in the mouth of the landlocked salmon. The big chinook male was an awesome take as I had flubbed the cast, having swung it too far upstream, but it didn't make any difference as he chased the fly down and smashed it. During the fight, a female came along and started rubbing herself on him. I got him off the hook as quickly as possible and moments after the release, the pair were swimming together as a happy couple.

Hahaha, why am I not surprised that a fly with the same colors as the 5 of Diamonds can catch Northern Pike?? Great video yet again! I'm definitely going to try this for Trout and I may very well try it for Salmon if I ever get the courage to drop the conventional gear during the season.

In some lake's where Sticklebacks occur and very large trout eat them and growing over 10lbs. The Mickey Finn can be the best fly.

Mega Thx for another Excellent video. What determines your use of curved scissors as in this video ?

Habit more than anything else. I have three pairs (two straight, one curved) and I usually reach for the curved most often.
