A flashy variant of the Bucktail Deceiver tied 5-6 inches long for easy casting, great movement and attraction for those toothy predators. A proven fly for searching water, which can be tied in any colour/flash combo you like. Once you have tied a few it will take 15mins to tie.
Something I forgot to show in the tutorial is that it helps running the fly under cold water to shape the bucktail.
Material:
Ahrex Hooks TP610 2/0
GSP100 white
Bucktail in olive and sunburst
Hedron Polar in olive and gold
Hedron Pearl a Glow in lime
Bigstreamers Nayat in light olive, black and yellow
Angelina Fibre in peacock
Deer Creek Artic Fox in orange
Deer Creek Volcano eyes in 10mm
Deer Creek UV Fine Flex
Other glues: Tear Mender and Evostik Serious Glue

This would be a great freshwater dorado fly. They love bulk, makes the fly easier to “sense” in murky water

A materials list would be helpful. I am in the US and I didn't recognize the names of a couple of the materials you used. Great video , simple patters which I find very appealing. Some of the great looking patterns out there seem to complicated. These are pike flies and will get destroyed, relatively quick and easy flies like this one you just demonstrated are what I personally find appealing.

Nice one Paul! The eyes coming off is not necessarily a bad thing... means you are catching lots of pike and there is nothing wrong with that! LOL! Cheers! Hank

I don't usually lose the eyes when catching. Lazy casting and flies hitting the kayak is my problem

Hey Paul, As I am brand new to tying I was wondering what your opinion is of traditional buck tail vs the synthetic types? How do you see using one or the other affect the look, movement, and potentially the hook up rate/attraction of the fly? Thanks
@user-oj8qe5sx9j
@user-oj8qe5sx9j 2 года назад
My favorite size ... I don't like tossing huge and fat woolen "cats". I use feathers on the fly's tail. They move lighter and better in water. A synthetic fly's tail does not move like a feather. The feather retains the fly's profile (cone), and the synthetics disintegrate in the water. Many knitters try to twist the tail to make the fly look like a willow leaf, but as soon as it gets into the water, the profile is broken. In addition, when fishing in a shallow lake, synthetic tails are often filled with mud and grass, which are difficult to clean when fishing.

Really digging your videos! Question for you regarding the head materials you use after the buck tail. Do you think some laser dub could be a worthy substitute? I've used it for for bait fish patterns before and it seems like it could work for this. Keep up the good work!
@paul_monaghan
@paul_monaghan 4 года назад
I used to use lazer dub or wool roving blended with angelina fibre a lot, and still do from time to time. It's not as durable as nayat but will work just fine.
@jeremiashauck114
@jeremiashauck114 4 года назад
Dear Paul, wonderful flies. For the white/grey one do you use also angelina fibre? What collor for the nayat? Thanks in advance for your information.
@paul_monaghan
@paul_monaghan 4 года назад
Thank you. I like to blend, silver, darker grey and black with a little angelina for those.

Hey Paul.. absolutely love your videos. So at about 16:35 the head of the fly is simply held in place when combed back with tear mender? It must harden quickly? Is there a specific tear mender you use? Is it the instant adhesive? Thanks for putting out such quality videos! Bob 👍🏻
@paul_monaghan
@paul_monaghan Год назад
Hi Bob, yes it's held back, and will harden within a couple of minutes. However this is quite an old vid and I don't use Tear Mender anymore. I found it yellows too quickly. I just thread dam materials back now and use different glues. Take a look at the recent vids.

You'll find all the materials listed at Deer Creek (in Wales), Bigstreamers (in NL) and Nordic anglers ( in Denmark). They might not sell all of the materials at the one shop, Nayat for example. Just the way it is

A stinger? If so you don't need it for pike, plus they aren't very good for the fish if you aren't eating it.
