Here is a tenkara style fly I put together. The fly is a fast tie and best part of all is the trout love it. I use this fly from top to bottom. Dont be fooled by tenkara flies. They are actually excellent wet flies.

You cleared up a problem I was having. As others stated-I also like the eye-in-vise method. Makes the left hand more useful and the hook point is less trouble. Thanks for taking the time - and you really should try a Tenkara rod. I will never go back to my western rods.

John, that is brilliant! Clamping the hook eye has so many advantages. I now have an older non rotary vice devoted to Tenkara. By tilting the jaws up about ninety degrees you can use a hook with a bent eye. It also holds surprisingly tight. Another thing I have found is when wrapping back towards the bend you can use your thumb on the left hand to push the thread out of the way of the hook point as you wrap. Try it. Fast, and no but thread. I may start tying my regular flies in this manner. Thanks for this brilliant idea!

A very nice fly innovatively tied. I've often thought about using the feather fluff as a dubbing-‚there is sure al lot of it to use. Great series Johnny. :_-

I've had huge success with glass beads on my custom flies over the years. I'll be Tenkara fishing this season here in Yosemite and I'm looking for inspiration. Looks like I've found it. Thanks!

Sorry ... from the picture I thought you were using a glass bead ... but it's still very cool. What kind of wax are you referring to?

Ever had a hook fail at the eye of the hook using this method?

Seems like waxing silk thread would defeat the purpose of using silk.

The only tradition I see is spoiling Japanese kebary tradition.
