It’s been a long cold and windy winter here in Montana and I’ve been tying none stop for two months. I walked in my tying room this morning and could not make it to my chair with so much stuff on the floor , couch, shelves and bench and thought I should probably re organize my stuff . Thank god I watched this video now I won’t do any organizing until April. Thanks for sharing, oh and nice pattern . I tie one similar but just snell a trailer hook on for my trout Spey flies . Happy Trails
This pattern looks like it would cast well and be effective on trout Spey rods - what colors would you suggest specifically for trout? I'm guessing either olive with chartreuse butt or brownish coloration with an orange hotspot? What darker colors would you suggest for off-color water/off season swinging for trout?
Hi Cliff, it's pretty tough to beat olive and black or olive with a little burnt orange. Brown and yellow is a great choice too. For off color water I really like all black.
Hey Jason, do you fish the Daiichi 2557 on your flies. I love the hook ,but...... I have skewered my fingers dozens of times while tying. Damn they sharp. Bleed the freak!
I don't see the benefits of tying this particular fly on a shank? The way it's tied and using the large intruder wire, looks like it would make it almost impossible to change out a damaged hook. Did i miss something? Other then that, It is a really nice looking fly.
The smaller trailing hook style flies aren't really meant to change out hooks like the bigger flies. Treat them more like traditional patterns. One time use.
Hi Thomas, while I'm no expert ( who is ?), with it shanked it still gives you a pivot/hinge when the fish turns or jumps rather than a 6 xl hook levering in its jaw. Yes you can't change out hook, but what you hook will stay hooked longer this way, I love tying classic hook steel-head patterns but shanks and trailer hooks will put more fish in the net. I hope Jason agrees? I only tie 1-2 K of this style of fly a year for a living. Done me well.. cheers
