The Olive & Partridge is a simple #softhackle fly pattern and simple to tie. There are quite a number of soft hackle #flypatterns that have been standards in fly boxes for many years like the Partridge & Orange or this Black & Blea. I hold the Olive and Partridge in the same class of flies.
I've kept this simple by using just a thread body, but an additional floss or stretch flex could be tied in as the body material. Keep in mind that the thread (or floss) will darken when wet.
Olive & Partridge Soft Hackle Fly Pattern
Hook: Firehole 315 nymph hook*
Thread: Olive 8/0 (70d)
Ribbing: Small gold wire
Body: Olive 8/0 (70d) or floss
Thorax: Gold Hare’s Ear Plus (HET9)
Hackle: Hungarian partridge
*I used this hook because I like the straight eye for my softhackle flies and I have a preference for curved shank hooks. You can use dry fly hooks if you want the fly to sit high in the surface film or heavier hooks to get the fly to sink.

The best flies IMHO are the simple ones. Tight lines!

Chimo Darren, I smiled when I saw the red dot by subscriptions after a couple of days of anticipation. I thought you went AWOL, lol. Nice soft hackle. I like the thread bodies too, nice and slim, fits the overall sparseness. I think the thorax adds to the shape too, sort of teardrop when the legs flow back. I never made the connection of tail = mayfly, tailless = caddis, makes sense, therefore the curved hook, preferences aside. I also prefer straight eye hooks. Thanks for that explaination, I just thought of soft hackles as a simple impressionistic bug. An article on wet flies by Steven Bird intitled "Dabblers" in the summer 2018 Flyfishing & Tying Journal really opened my eyes as to wet fly styles and construction. I've tried tying paired wing wetflies but they ended up looking like the clump wings that I've tied so I stuck with that style. But I love how Loch style flies look, especially the 200R hooks Bird used for the dabblers in the article. However my biggest stream brown came on a #12 grouse and orange, tied on a dry fly hook. Excellent advise and techniques in this tutorial "professor", thanks for furthering my "enlightenment". Looking forward to the next one. Cheers 👍😎🍻

Chimo Joe. Yes, I've been slacking a little on my end. lol it's getting busy in the fly mines here and I have to keep Kaiser busy while school is off for the summer. I used to tie a few softhackles on the Mustad C53s (similar to the 200R) but I never found much success on that hook style. It's a little long and I think I was missing hook sets. The TMC 101 is a nice hook for them as well. Thanks for the heads up on the article. I'll try to pick up a copy. Cheers

Piscator Flies lol, fly mines, that's a good one.😁 I figured you were busy, you have to train Kaiser to be an apprentice, he can prep your materials. That'll keep him busy and you can increase production. Then he can take over the business when you retire. 😯 Yeah the last 3 or 4 issues of ff&tj have been excellent. I'm actually reading it cover to cover instead of looking at the "centerfolds" (flies ;-) Just glad to hear all is well, take care and cheers 👍😎🎣 (yeah the 101 would be an excellent choice, or a 3366, my favorite)

Thanks. Nothing in the works for the moment. Its been too hot to fish the creeks the past couple weeks. We had some good rain this week though, steelhead / salmon should be running in higher number soon.

Thanks! I'm using the Griffin Mongoose. I have 2 of them, one I use for my production work and this one for videos. My video vise is the one I used to tie on for production. It's got over 50,000 flies tied on it. The newer one has a mostly black finish and a few little upgrades. Cheers
