Tylenol is Getting Sued for Increasing Chance of Autism and ADHD

For quite awhile, my feed was filled with advertisements about a lawsuit in which I could be entitled for compensation, claiming that a Johns Hopkins study found that Tylenol use during pregnancy increased the risk for ASD and ADHD by 20%. So, of course, I had to find out how legit this whole thing was, and I've broken it down for you, as well.

Thank you, you are a blessing. I always knew something was different with me and always felt out of place. My son was diagnosed with autism at 2 1/2 years old. If I could ever explain the story how everything fell into place it would take a long while, but I never noticed until I ran across your RU-vid the checklist of things that can be considered in the category of autism. I have made an appointment and am hoping to clarify I am also autistic. It’s interesting because I’m not scared of it, I am hoping that there is a set of ppl that I actually am a species to where it’s a unity in my heart, body and mind. Thank you for the way you explain things and being one of the first to step into this awareness and world that it’s not weird it’s just unique. So many positive vibe to you ❤❤❤❤❤

Correlation is not causation. Tylenol didn't exist when I was born, but mom had a predilection for headaches and every other ache she could muster. However, she was likely autistic and used aches and illnesses to regulate her emotions for social issues she couldn't manage. There are generations of women who coped "well" yet were autistic and undiagnosed. I'm still of the opinion that environmental factors (food, medication, etc.) can amplify autistic issues, but we don't have accurate genetic histories for autism, and therefore blaming it's occurrence on environmental issues is still deeply suspect.

"Correlation is not causation." The causation is from the fever that the drug treated.
@shockthetoast
@shockthetoast 10 месяцев назад
@@Desertphile But we don't know that either. It's possible, but there's so many other possibilities. Other factors may make the mother more susceptible to fever, more likely to have aches and pains, more likely to feel those aches and pains more intensely, etc.

No, correlation is not causation, but it may be prudent to put a warning label on all products containing acetaminophen.

I agree. Women used to get married very young and often weren't expected to work. I'm sure many young women with autism 1 or 2 back in the day got married young and were stay at home Moms. They were never tested for autism.

None of these studies have been able to rule out the genetic factor, I was only diagnosed at 48 (I didn't even have my diagnosis yet when I started watching this channel) and my mum is pretty sure that she didn't have any paracetamol while she was pregnant with me. Unless these studies just randomly recruited pregnant people to keep a diary through their whole pregnancy and then followed up at various life point up to 15 years (being generous as I know that people still get missed but a lot more are getting diagnosed by that age), you are going to get a lot of confirmation bias in your studies especially from people who want someone/something to blame for their child being 'different'. Also find it interesting that it is the biggest acetaminophen brand in America that has been sued whereas I live in Australia Panadol is the biggest brand but by no means the only one. If they really believed that it was the active ingredient what is it that they are actually trying to achieve besides a payout.

If someone is tryna recruit you into a study for this research question bc you're autistic/adhd, that study is already off to a bad start by not choosing a random sample. 😅 My thoughts back when I first saw all these were like the confounding bias example you gave except also correlation =/= causation - we tend to experience pain differently as autistics, depends on what type of pain too but sometimes we are less sensitive to it and sometimes more sensitive, and with pregnancy I feel like I was more sensitive to everything than my own baseline. But if we are more sensitive to pain bc of sensory issues related to being autistic, we'll be more likely to take tylenol as the only option really, and our kid being autistic was already predictable based on genetics, so the causation if there is any could also be the other way around.
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 10 месяцев назад
Not necessarily, it depends on how the study was created. A group of autistic people with a significantly higher or lower than normal number having the link could still be useful. Also, with rare and uncommon components of the general populatoin that sort of thing may be needed in order to get enough participants to be a representative sample. A study looking into this with 0 autistic participants would be useless.
@siliconsulfide8
@siliconsulfide8 10 месяцев назад
*Possible wall of text if opened fully!!* @@SmallSpoonBrigade If you only recruit autistic individuals, but still wanted to compare it to the rest of the population, the data would be from 2 separate studies (that might not have the same conditions) - would that not mess with the results? Though, that also might mean that you're grouping people into autistic and allistic people and then testing to see if their mothers took paracetamol while pregnant, right (or not? please explain if not)? Like, if you wanted to use that data for the reverse (testing results being the groups), would that not skew the results? Why not group people into those whose mother took it while pregnant and those whose mother didn't (or something like that) - and then see how many people of each group have autism? In that case, accepting anyone who wants to participate instead of specifically searching for autistic people seems to be less likely to result in a biased outcome (and just have a large enough sample that there would, indeed, be some autistic people in anyways). One might result in "--% of diagnosed autistic people had contact* with paracetamol before birth, while [only**] --% of allistic people did" and the other in "--% of people who had contact* with paracetamol before birth have been diagnosed with autism, while [only**] --% of those who didn't are diagnosed autistic" - and well... depends on you if you prefer one over the other or think both lead to the same conclusion * _don't ask me how to word it better right now_ ** _if it would make sense with the results_

Basically the paper titles are clickbait and don't say at all what the information they collected say. They found some titles that sounded good to their opinion and just ran with that without caring what was written in those studies. This is typical of social media and lawyers to make money that does nothing to help anyone.

I believe there is also a correlation between stress during pregnancy and autism in the child. It seems reasonable that pregnant women with stress headaches would take acetaminophen. Of course, my being born in 1951 to a probably stressed mother and paracetamol only becoming available in the UK on prescription in 1956 is just anecdata.

I personally do not care whether Tylenol causes autism or not. I don’t think any scientist believes autism is solely genetic or solely environmental in all cases. If it does cause autism then I would want to know. I know my kids will be ND, and that’s fine… I just don’t want life to be much harder than it needs to be for them.

So anything that says meta analysis is accurate you’re saying 1:29
@strictnonconformist7369
@strictnonconformist7369 10 месяцев назад
A meta-analysis is a way to launder an opinion to get a particular outcome: they’re statistical garbage. Unless every study done that’s included as part of the meta-analysis is done in exactly the same way and with the same conditions, you’re comparing apples and antelopes.
@user-xj2xg9ln3t
@user-xj2xg9ln3t 10 месяцев назад
They _can_ be but not necessarily. Cochrane collaboration meta-analyses actually provide great insight into the consistency of various studies when looked at over time. Meta-analyses are a critical part of moving knowledge forward since part of science is replication and meta-analyses look at what happens when various researchers try the same or similar things over time.
@gigahorse1475
@gigahorse1475 10 месяцев назад
Meta-analyses are required to describe in exact detail the search terms and how they found and included or disincluded the papers. It’s not just picking and choosing a narrative. If it was, it wouldn’t be published by any reliable journal.

Acetaminophen is known to deplete glutathione, the building block of the immune system. Glutathione depleted means mitochondrial damage and dysfunction, leading to the inability of the body to fend off pathogens that lead to inflammation. Brain inflammation is encephalopathy. Encephalopathy is the clinical diagnostic name for Autism as well as neuroimmune responses, disorders and syndromes.
@JohnSmith-ft4gc
@JohnSmith-ft4gc 10 месяцев назад
That's just Word Salad. Both the Cleveland Clinic & Mayo Clinic's entry on Encephalopathy don't mention Autism once. Autism is short for Autism Spectrum Disorder which has an entry in the DSM5 - the D in DSM5 is for DIAGNOSTIC.

@@JohnSmith-ft4gc Is it really, John Smith? Or do a high number of Autists have health comorbidities ignored by the Autism or neurodiverse diagnosis, which is only a BEHAVIORAL Diagnosis, and not a NEUROLOGICAL Diagnosis. Big difference, as it is a well hidden fact that Autism carries neurological comorbidities, including damage and demyelenation of the nerve cells, leading to either hypervigilant nerve responses or blunting/numbing of nerve responses especially in the auditory and ocular nerves. If this looks like word salad to you, maybe increasing your comprehension is in order.
