As much as I like Tyler Perry’s work, it needs a lot of improvement and he needs to treat his workers better. Great content as always. ❤

I'm glad to see you talking about this. Also, telling everyone "it's my maintenance day, I'm not getting done up for Tyler Perry" is a power move and a half. Much respect. There are so many things to criticize about Tyler Perry like the ableism, the way he talks about SA and Black women, the repeated STD stigma, fatphobia in how he moralizes the characters by using those things as a form of comeuppance, the colorism, the list goes on. On top of that, there's the fact that he's both a union buster and a pusher for AI which is beyond disappointing as a Black director. The way he talks about other writers, particularly Black writers, he gives this impression that he doesn't respect them. I do get that in how you talk about Diary of a Mad Black woman. It has issues--oooh lord--but I totally get your feelings toward it. I also think Diary of a Mad Black woman doesn't get talked enough as a disability story and the ableism in it and how the husband's disability is used in the context of the film. I'm finishing the last of a video about this topic I'm still editing, so I'll try not to say too much because I'll have it out soon so the main things about Perry and the Boondocks: - The Boondocks episode barely focuses on the actual legitimate points to zone in on wrt Tyler Perry. That one scene of Huey summarizing Diary of a Mad Black woman is sandwiched between the majority of the episode just being queerphobia, fatphobia and misogynoir. When they hit, they hit just right, but it's easy to forget that that wasn't most of the episode. - The episode's framing plays out exactly like a gay/trans panic episode that was present in other works like Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, etc. in how it views Tyler Perry as a queer deviant, be it a gay man or a trans woman, which is further supported by the extensive references to Rocky Picture Horror show, the way Robert makes the comparison of homosexuality to the disgusting challenges of Fear Factor. - The same season also saw an increase in transphobic jokes and slurs in episodes before and after this one, which also lines up with the increase of trans visibility in the 2010s media landscape. I understand it's a satirical work and that the cast are not people who we necessarily sympathize with, but that's also a very incomplete way of looking at satire. The framing of the joke with Robert being stuck with fat women as groupies and with the entire episode's premise centering around a predatory gay man trying to threaten and abuse a man to satiate his depraved sexual desires works in a way that may be a joke at Robert's expense for his womanizing behavior, but also comes at the expense of fat and queer bodies in how the joke is reliant on us cosigning the disgust Robert expresses toward them. Tyler I think also gets a lot of undue hate for the way people see him as a closeted queer man and how they buy into the myth of the emasculation of Black men when it's just cishet men not willing to challenge their thinking. To your point, Tyler Perry seems very much like a self serving leech just pumping out content to generate content. He's content farming, just in Hollywood. And because he's Black, it gives him a shield to be able to hide behind liberal representation rhetoric of having a Black face in a high place. But criticizing Tyler Perry for the more valid points like the ones mentioned above also means having to call out the overwhelming majority of the film/TV industry. Like you said, he doesn't even need to work anymore and could be doing a lot more but just chooses not to.

My mother was a HUGE Tyler Perry stan back in the 2000s. So I grew up with a couple of his earlier films (My personal favorites being Daddy's Little Girls, Madea Goes To Jail. and I Can Do Bad All By Myself). While I still enjoy them to this day, I'd be lying if I said either of them would be my first choice for a movie night. I think the main reason why Tyler Perry was even able to last as long as he has is because of the fact that he's been not only one of the few big name black creators in Hollywood but also one of the few who regularly puts out black centric stories consistently. The fact that his work also appeals to a demographic (Older Christian Black people.) that the rest of Hollywood never showed interest in catering to (And let's be honest, they still don't.) up until he came on the scene probably also helped. That being said, it's become pretty clear that he's become too comfortable in his position in the last couple of decades. And nowadays with black consumers having more options of what media we want to support than we did in the 2000s, Tyler has been falling behind. And as much as he doesn't like the criticism, he's gonna have to start if he wants to maintain relevance.

Its literally the cult of black exceptionalism. Whenever we get a person that makes a big splash in the arts it doesnt take but too many successes before people act like that person can do no wrong.

Totally agree! I havent watched any of his shows and last movie was Agrimony... His work keeps appealing to a certain crowd- his own words and he is right. I think The Family that Preys I would pick as my favorite of his. I am not hating over jealousy but as a black woman that loves diverse genres, especially witchy, fantasy, horror, or romance, independent, his hit one note for me so I dont consider his work top tier for my tastes. He did make a huge impact but there is no evolution for me.

I think that awful Madea Halloween movie he made years back in like 2017 (the one with Bella Thorne, Liza Koshy, and, for some reason, Fouseytube) was the point where I realized that his movies have dropped MASSIVELY in terms of humor, quality, and heart. It wasn't even fun in a "it's cringy, but I had fun watching it and it's harmless" sort of way. Half of the movie was just pro-child hitting propaganda that they knew their parent audience would love and agree with, and the jokes were unfunny and the plot was boring and predictable. I will say that one scene in one of his more recent movies (I forgot which one) where Madea tells a fake story about her and Rosa Parks, and how she was with Madea's man and was too scared to come out of the back because Madea wanted to fight, did make me laugh. Other than that, his recent movies are terrible all throughout.

I honestly haven't watched any Tyler Perry's work in years, mostly because even as a kid, there was always just something off and wrong about it to me. I recently saw a video going around on Twitter where he's talking to Keke Palmer and he's basically trying to justify why he hasn't improved as an artist by saying "these stories are important" which I think highlights the main problem with him and his work. He thinks he's beyond critique. He's one of, if not, the most black successful black Creator in hollywood, he still acts like he has this underdog mentality. Like you've proven yourself, sure, but that doesn't mean you can't still grow as an artist or shouldn't try to keep growing. And because he hasn't grown as an artist, he's basically stopped growing as a person, which a scene in a lot of his work. The colorism and fat phobia yeah, but also, when is the last time there was a queer character in any of his work. The weird transphobic joke from Madea goes to jail. The general misogynoir. It doesn't help that many of his stans shut down anybody who presents any valid critique, just making him feel justified and not improving as an artist. Like there's so many other black creators that are much better than him. Quinta Brunson, Nia DaCosta, Ryan Coogler, Jordan Peele, Issa Rae. Maybe he paved the way for them, but they have all surpassed him.

Growing up, my mom loved watched anything Tyler Perry even to this day. I was use to seeing the movies and plays. Now with Tyler himself I feel like he’s too self absorbed now compared to his older work. Most of I find pretty good and actually speaks on real situations. It did become extremely repetitive with the same storylines over and over in a different font. His Madea movies from Mad Black Woman to big happy family were good. The best imo being Madea goes to jail. Everything after was trash and seemed so much more of a hallmark comedy. Even his shows nowadays is crap.

I think the only Tyler Perry work I enjoyed was House of Payne. Everything else just felt off, over the top, or just not for me. Everything I've heard in recent years explains why Tyler Perry's works never resonated with me.

Alright, I've got a lot of stuff to say about this! I grew up watching much of Tyler Perry's work, stage plays, movies and TV shows. My mom and I even went to a couple of Tyler's stage plays (Madea Goes To Jail and What's Done In The Dark). And it's not like Tyler hasn't done any good movies at all cause he has done plenty: Madea's Family Reunion I Can Do Bad All By Myself Good Deeds The Family That Preys Madea Goes To Jail (movie adaptation) Diary of a Mad Black Woman Acrimony A Jazzman's Blues (more on this later) The list goes on, but my point is, Tyler does have it in him to make good movies...when he wants to, anyways. Which leads to my next point and actually circles back to A Jazzman's Blues: I cannot laud and give enough of my props to that movie. A Jazzman's Blues was phenomenal and is genuinely one of the best movies Tyler's ever done--like, Oscar award winning level of phenomenal (and I'm not saying that sarcasticly!), and it was due to how the story was like Romeo and Juliet meets Imitation of Life and that Tyler had been working on the script as far back as 1995 (so for 23 years!) and that time, love, respect and effort is apparent and enriches the quality of storytelling and character development. After that movie, I was actually looking forward to what Tyler would do next and was hopeful that he'd level up further in the quality of his art from that point. Which now makes Tyler's regression back into making low brow, classless, clichéd and lazily written movies like Mea Culpa that are even worse than the other low brow, classless, clichéd and lazily written movies Tyler's done before downright diabolical. Cause like I said before, Tyler's got the potential to do good movies with thought and effort, and especially so with movies like A Jazzman's Blues. So everything else that's re-regressed soon afterwards is a choice. And that's what makes Tyler a hack in my opinion. (And don't get me started on Tyler's sick obsession with dragging black female characters through the ringer and putting out black female trauma porn! 🤮)
