Type 4 "Lion" - Heljan's Prototype Predator 

Loved this, I'd never even seen this prototype before so it was interesting to hear a bit of its history too! Another great video, well done!

Hi again Hylton. What an amazingly striking loco! Back in the day, the first of many classes of steam locos were originally outshopped in what was known as "photographic grey" for publicity purposes, so maybe this was the reason why Lion was painted white? It was painted green in later life, I think. You've gotta love Heljan for producing the more niche BR diesel models. Very good, informative and insightful review.

Brought al heljan Lion 2017 on E-bay for £87.00 including postage. Pretty good compared to todays price. But the real pleasant surprise was it was also fitted with dcc sound. With no mention of the upgrade by the seller.

Underframe dirt & weathering of bogies would fix the plastic look

The problem is not the steepness - it's the vertical curve where the steepness changes in the sag between the normal rise and the extra steep part. If you place a straight edge against your slope, you will see what I mean, and how you can remedy that.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this video, since I've also got Heljan's Lion (mine was also bought from Hattons to boot, although she cost me an arm and a leg). For the most part, I like these obscure or one-off prototypes, and Lion looks great alongside DP2 and HS4000 'Kestrel' (also made by Heljan). That combination's not historically accurate, because the real DP2 and D0260 'Lion' were both scrapped before Kestrel was even built. I recommend checking out the DP2 and HS4000 models if you haven't got them yet.

Made a private comment to you about the white wiper arms, but see they were white on prototype as well. Guess who ever chose the livery for this loco, did this late on a Friday afternoon after spending a weewhile in the pub....Very informative video again and will sort the incline.

1B21 ? 1st digit refers to type of train - in this case express passenger; the B refers to destination, or route (eg M referred to a train going to the midland region) and last 2 digits are the train reporting number.

Fun fact lion was the prototype for the class 47 and 53 and 56

At £117 you got a real good bargain there for this loco, as you said they do normally go for about £200 second hand on various places, I managed to get one of these myself last year from a shop for I think it was £189 but I didn’t mind paying that for one because at the time I was picking up all the other one off locomotives that heljan have produced in the past, I pretty much own all of the one off diesel locomotives that heljan produced, to be honest I think it is very unlikely for this to see a rerelease or a retool, heljan with their one offs like this were released as limited editions originally but never say never but I do think it is unlikely and to be honest if you were talking about the bogie side frames there isn’t really much wrong with those being plastic, plastic allows there to be more detail on them compared to doing them in metal. It’s models like this that show heljans excellent capabilities of producing OO gauge locomotives, first of all to even have the guts to produce these in the first place is something that they should be commended for because without them it’s very likely that these wouldn’t have been produced at all, when it comes to one offs as well you can guarantee that it will be a good model, as a few other people have said in this comment section one of their recent one off releases has been the 18100 gas turbine or E1000/E2001 (Class 80) electric through Rails of Sheffield, the 18100 being the one I own and it is very good. Not sure if I am right but is the other loco you picked up at the same time as this one of the LMS twins 10000/10001 diesel locomotives, I spotted it in the tunnel when you were trying Lion on the incline, overall a good video showcasing this model.

A white loco? Wow that’s crazy, but I like it. Aren’t bogies and wheels on trains coated in thick sump grease though, The kind of oil you can almost roll into a ball. Was the oil white? 😂

After Lion was taken out of service she was taken to Thomas W. Wards yard, Attercliffe, Sheffield and was left for a few years before been scrapped. The Lion was built at Birmingham in 1962 but was nothing more than scrap metal by 1965. I have recently brought the Heljan gas turbine 18100 another lost locomotive she was scrapped in 1976 the model large and heavy runs ok .
