Talk about an emotional performance, he's baring his soul here. Look at his face when he sings the line about his dad, he's struggling to keep his composure. Christ, this should be a mandatory watch for any aspiring musician on how to convey emotions thru music. I don't think that Peter knew just how profoundly his words helped people (especially me) deal with the feelings we don't talk about in public. Even at 39, after 20+ years of listening, it still helps me...
i think pete, like a lot of musicians with pain and difficulty expressing it, at least *hoped* that somehow he would help someone. music has an odd ability to speak directly to things that, like you said, we dont talk about in public. it speaks to hearts and whatever "souls" may be, depending on the needs. peter's birthday was the day before my mom's, and he was 2 years younger than she is. odd that steele was so close in age to my mother. if only i was still capable of writing music, and had ever been capable of writing something for her like his Nettie. /sigh
You said it brotha I feel the exact same way I really miss Peter steel I wish he was with us right live his life performing his career he shall be missed
I love the way he throws his empty wine bottle into the crowd but not before he checks its safe and watches to make sure all is ok. He hid how sweet he actually was. Even from himself I think
Man, the guts it takes to sing this in front of thousands of people... I mean, this guy casually says that he hates himself and wishes to die in front of that huge crowd. That's such fucking personal stuff, but he just pours everything into the music, in front of everybody. You gotta be so strong to do that, to let it all out, to get people to relish your deep, dark thoughts and struggles! Can you believe that people are headbanging and crowd surfing to a song about grief and depression?! I mean, yeah, the song is awesome, Pete was amazing, but still... I guess I'm grateful for his talent and I'm glad that he turned his negative emotions into such amazing music.
being a victim of clinical depression and playing in a doom metal band as the frontman and the main lyrics composer mixes just perfect \m/ i really love this band
In a latter interview he said it was his favorite Music Video he was in. Not this, but the actual music video. It's the interview with all of them against the brick wall.
It's cool he can have such a gnarly, heavy voice like in the beginning of this song, and then break into a really good mellow singing voice. Almost sounds like Jim Morrison on steroids.
Outside of Type O fans, Peter IMO is criminally underrated as a talrnt in rock music. He was an original in all areas... playing, singing, writing, showmanship, etc. I got to talk to him while they were touring for Bloody Kisses, and he, and the rest of the band were very cool, and really appreciated the fans.
+Guitar Whores damn right!!! Pete was a genius, and a great guy from all that I could tell from his interviews. I never met him, but he seemed like an awesome guy.
this version makes me cry all the time that I see it the part where he sings and screams it makes me cry cause you can tell he his into this song, about losing his family and now that hes gone it touches home. Brooklyn has a broken heart. we love you pete never to be forgotten. Hug my mom for me.
The different bridge part he sings around 3:36 showcases the absolute raw power and amazing vocal control Peter had. Id say hes probably one of the few artist where I prefer quite a few of the live cuts opposed to the studio. RIP Peter🤘🏻
There's a magic to this band that you rarely hear in music. I miss them so much 💚🖤💚🖤 This was a landmark performance for them. Aside from the title track, they mostly left this record alone on future tours, too many bad memories for Pete.
3:38 and 4:20 are the reason that I keep coming back to this video. The power behind that is intoxicating and really should have been tracked on the album version. Even if it was just a layer underneath the soft falsetto.
Such a hard song to listen to without breaking down cuz you can really connect with it on a very deep level. My favorite song by them I think. I know I'm not alone when I say it feels like death just surrounds you, lost way too many people I've cared about and loved. Peace.
The day I buried my dad...words couldnt explain my feelings. But this song truly said it!! Leaving the cemetery and playing this song made me cry the first time for the funeral and death. R.I.P. Pete!
I LOVE how type o negative has that one part of the song that just BLOWS YOU AWAY like 3:38-4:48 i HAVE to listen to it 4 times everytime i listen to it... Thats why i like ton so mujch live is almost alwaysbetter RIP PETE ur the reason im sober
so fortunate i saw them at the Masquerade in Atlanta May 4, 2007 after the release of Dead Again. One of the best shows I attended. Pete Steele hi-fived my hand.
So amazing to see this emotional performance. You don’t see videos of him performing these too often. I would love to hear a live version of red water or die with me 💚💚💚
Peter Steele has been an inspiration for me since 2000, i was 6 then. Such a shame that he passed, but like the song goes, "Everything Dies" We miss you Pete, Rest in Peace.
Fuck, it hurts so much seeing him like this. Such a tortured soul. I just want to give him a big, tight hug.. (though no hug would've been big enough for the man of Steele. Big heart needs big love.) Rest in peace, brother. Forever and always loved and terribly missed by all of us.
He was a brilliant existentialist of a man. I never got to see them live and I wish I had gotten the opportunity before my final day comes but I guess that will never be.
There was an official video for this live version on RU-vid too, but of course they took THAT OFF RU-vid TOO! Its like they know which version is the best, they keep all this live stuff up, multiple vids of it, and I've seen this many many times, if there is AN OFFICIAL MUSIC video copy, they DELETE IT! I'm getting fed up with RU-vids bullshit policy.
Exactly.. I love this live version mostly for this part and how unreserved, loud and passionately he sings this part compared to the album version. So much power in his voice, like he's trying so hard to project his voice so that the dead might hear him... At least that's what I feel when I hear/watch this part
Wow!!!! 11 YEARS AGO!!!! at that time I didn't know this music at all - unfortunately - I only heard it on the internet for the first time a few years ago anD ITS one oF MY Favorite Songs Ever!!!
In a few days is Pete's birthday. He would've turned 50 then, God's got a sick sense of humor...same with Pete, guess they're doin' fine up above, but hell I miss his unique maladjusted style and musical inspiration !
Just started listening to type o a few years ago. Never had the chance to see them live unfortunately. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t listen to them. Peter, we miss you green man. No one can replace you!
wHEN pETER Lets out the bello @3;38 it almost does'nt seem human, somehow Idon't feel alone in my feelings,to sing about this subject and his thoughts truely was not an act.Underated at the time of release but true brillance
@cabalofdemons I missed that show and still kicking my own ass for passing on the Oct '09 show at the Masquerade. They made a staple playing there. My fav Atlanta TON gig was at the Tabernacle sometimes in the late '90s. Some fool tossed a beer bottle at Pete onstage. He saw it coming and ducked it . .while not missing a note. Helluva performer. I knew then that these guys were special. Lesson in life: take NOTHING for granted. See the show while you can. He will be missed.
You're wrong! The screaming in 3:50 is CREEPING! I love this song, but this Live-Version is ABSOLUTELY fascinating! Thanx for Sharing! Type's coming to Poland in 3 months! And I'll be in a first row!!! hOWGH!
Vocals that will never be matched again. Theres only a few that cant be matched 1st two that come to mind is Peter, Layne Staley, and George Jones to name a few. Yes I said George Jones on a metal video but anyones vocals that can give ya chills are 1 of a kind
Love this song! Used to have a version downloaded that had the lead riff about three times. It was a studio cut, and it would bring you to your knees! Killer!!!
Wow, I like this version of the song better than the studio version. Peter at 3:38 is so awesome. Chills, goosebumps, all of it, and that riff is sick.
