Different Types of Standby Databases
A standby database is an operational secondary copy of a production or primary database, usually located in a remote server. In the case of a failure at the primary site, the standby site can immediately be activated with minimal impact on business operations.
Primary Database: PRODUCTION
read & write mode
Standby Database:
MOUNT mode
3 Types in standby database:
a. Physical Standby (Default Standby Type)
MOUNT mode
redo/archives will apply from PROD to DR (more efficient)
PROD & DR will be in sync
We can convert PROD and DR status (switch over / DR drill)
In case PROD fails/crashes, we can perform fail over (minimal / no data loss)
We can convert PS to SS and SS to PS
Physical Standby - Snapshot Standby - Physical Standby
We can convert PS to LS where as LS to PS is not possible.
Physical Standby - Logical Standby
Logical Standby - Not Possible Physical Standby
b. Snapshot standby
OPEN / read write mode
redo/archives will not apply from PROD to DR
PROD & DR will not be in sync
We can not convert PROD and DR status (switch over)
In case PROD fails/crashes, we can perform fail over (Data loss)
c. Logical Standby
OPEN
SQL APPLY (LCR) - less efficient
PROD & DR will not be in sync, where as DR is having different data than the PROD
We can not convert PROD and DR status (switch over)
