That second substitute, every teachers wet dream about dealing with classes of rude kids. Sadly it really is difficult for subs, you've simultaneously got to deal with students determined to be at their boldest and rudest, and got basically no authority. You can't be too over exerting with sending kids out because you have to show that you taught the kids, and if you get a bad review from the school (which the admin willl often do even if it's entirely their fault for placing you with a shitty class with no information and no cooperative assistance) it can cause issues.
